A Message on Safety....Courtesy of NSA South Potomac Public Affairs Office

*** ALL HANDS - POKEMON GO APP SAFETY AND GUIDANCE ***

As many of you are aware, at the beginning of July, the “Pokemon Go” app was released for IOS and Android devices. “Pokemon Go” allows players to capture, battle and train virtual Pokemon in real-world settings. Players use the GPS function and the camera on their smart phones to follow their avatar’s travels in the real world setting.

The popular use of this app, both on and off base, raises safety and security concerns. As players embark on their quest to “catch them all,” they tend to disregard their surround-ings, which can lead to injury as well as trespassing.

In order to mitigate trespassing issues, please report suspicious individuals, individuals engaging in suspicious activity, and unauthorized personnel in or near your workspaces to the base police. Please let the base police know if you believe the person wandered near or into your workspace because of suspected use of the Pokemon Go app. During these incidents, if safe to do so, please have the suspicious individual or unauthorized person stay in place until the base police are able to arrive on scene.

Please do not call base police to report individuals who are merely playing the game while in public areas or to report individuals who are authorized to be in your command spaces.

Finally, please be aware of your surroundings while using the app and engage in safe practices.

Living Green TipsAugust: Getting ready for a new school year

Information courtesy of http://www.webmd.com/parenting/family-health-12/back-to-school-prep? It’s almost time for the new school year to begin. Little ones can be nervous about starting a new school and beginning a new routine. Here are some tips from WebMD on how to help your child(ren) get ready for a productive year!!1. Re-Establish School Routines. Use the last few weeks of summer to get into a school-day rhythm by having your child practice getting up and getting dressed at the same time every morning.2. Nurture Independence. Once the classroom door shuts, your child will need to manage a lot of things on their own. Get them ready for independence by talking ahead of time about responsibilities that they are old enough to shoulder.3. Create a Launch Pad. Designate a spot where school things like backpacks and lunch boxes always go to avoid last-minute scrambles in the morning.4. Set Up a Time and Place for Homework . Head off daily battles by making homework part of your child’s everyday routine. Establish a time and a place for studying at home. 5. After-School Plans. School gets out before most working parents get home, so it’s important to figure out where your children will go, or who will be at home, in the afternoons. 6. Make a Sick-Day Game Plan. Parents also know the trials and tribulations of getting a call from the school nurse when they can’t get away from the office. Before school begins, line up a trusted babysitter or group of parents that can pinch hit for each other when children get sick. 7. Attend Orientations to Meet and Greet. Schools typically hold orientation and information sessions before the start of each academic year. These are good opportunities for you to meet the key players: your child’s teachers, school counselors, the principle, and most importantly, front desk staff. 8. Talk to the Teachers . When you talk to your child’s teachers, ask about their approach to homework. Ask for the dates of tests and large assignments so you can help your child plan accordingly. 9. Make it a Family Affair. Together, you and your child can plan for success. Create a routine chart.
