Lincolnshire Archives, Boston St Botolph Par 1/5A

This list was compiled up by the Revd John Calthrop, vicar of the parish of St Botolph,

Boston, 1746-1785, in response to the request of the Bishop of Lincoln (John Green) to all

parish clergy for information on Roman Catholics residing within the diocese. The findings

were to be presented before the House of Lords. Calthrop collected and recorded far more

data then was required and only the information about individual Catholics was actually

submitted. The full set of replies sent to the bishop can be seen at Lincolnshire Archives,

reference DIOC/DISS/1A. The replies from 113 Lincolnshire parishes are reference

DIOC/DISS/1A/18.

In the Market-Place, Proceeding from Mr West's House at the Church Yard-

Gate along the West-side to the Parker's Quay

Researched and transcribed by Susan Payne, BA (Oxf), DAA (Bangor), June 2017

The residents of Boston East and West in 1767.

This list is to be found in the back of a burial register with entries 1769-1789 and is actually

undated. However, Calthrop's letter to the bishop in response to the official "Queries" sent

out to all clergy in July 1767, makes it clear that he collected this information for that piece

of work. He refers to going from "house to house" and the total population statistic he

quotes in his letter of 19 September 1767 matches the figure in the listing. In addition,

Samuel Partridge, Calthrop's successor as vicar of Boston, quoted the same population

figure with the date 1767 in his pamphlet compiled to encourage inoculation against

smallpox (Lincoln Central Library UP62, An account of Baptisms and Burials and Deaths by

Small-pox within the Parish of BOSTON, And of the Population of the aid Parish from AD

1749 to 1802 inclusive being 54 years. With the Result and Computation, Designed to

attract the Attention of the Parishioners, and of the Public, to COW POCK Inoculation. By

Samuel Partridge, MA, vicar. Printed and sold by BB Kelsey, Boston, Price 2d, 1808)

The list at the back of the burial register does not have numbered pages, but I have given

numbers here to indicate the information provided page by page. The brackets appear to

denote households living at the same address.

A useful near contempory town plan of Boston is that surveyed by Robert Hall in 1741 and

published by Wm Nichols and Rt Hall in 1742. It can be viewed at Lincolnshire Archives,

reference FL MAP 24.
