The choir were very happy to see us return and we reduced the cost to help their appeal, which made a healthy sum for the church restoration but still brought in a small income. It was a fun day out though some orchestra members had a very difficult and prolonged nocturnal journey back to London. Message from the director: “IjustwantedtosayanofficialthankstoLindenBaroquewhodeliveredforusmagnificentlylastSaturday.Itwasatotaljoyforustohaveidiomaticperformancesandaccompanimentstosuchlife-enhancingmusicandthepleasureofworkingwithsuchaterrificgroupofpeople–totallycommitted,professional,sensitiveandaccommodating.Somanyofthechoirandaudiencesaidattheend‘nowthat’smysortofmusic’.IampersonallyverygratefultoBenforgraciouslytoleratingmylimitedorchestralexperienceandguidingustactfullytowardsagoodperformance.Ithinktheplayersenjoyedittoo!Wehadabout130intheaudience,sothewholeenterprisewasveryworthwhilefromourpointofview.” July 4th “Building Bridges”: Staats- und Domchor Berlin director Simon Standage, Trinitatis-Kirche, Karl-August-Platz, Berlin-Charlottenburg Purcell Suite from “King Arthur” Buxtehude Cantata “Jesu meine Freude” Handel Water Music suite in G Handel Concerto Grosso op.6 no.11 in A Boyce Symphony no. 7 in Bb Dedekind “Wandel der Zeit” and “ Alles, was ihr tut” Telemann Wassermusik Violin 1: Simon Standage, Nicola Jackman, Judy Taylor, Hannah Barker, Barbara Grant, Ian Cutts Violin 2: Michael Jenner, Jocelyn Slocombe, Carolyn Hall, Alan Selwyn, Linda McDonald Viola: Mike Blee, John Sutherland, Matthew LeMage Cello: Louise Jameson, Sarah Roberts, Mary Walton Bass: John Baker Flute: Nick Jackman Recorder: Maggie Bruce, Clare Galton Oboes: Lysander Tennant, Simon Galton Bassoon: Maggie Bruce, Mathew Dart Harpsichord: Christine Thornton We had performed this programme with Simon Standage in Greenwich in January 2015 in aid of charities. Both concerts were the inspiration of Peter Evans, son of one of our beloved founder members, violinist, Gertrude Evans who died in September 2013. Gertrude was born and spent her early years in Berlin attending the Hochschule fur Musik before escaping to England shortly after Kristallnacht. Her parents both perished in the concentration camps. There continues to be much research among the documents of the period and some correspondence from Gertrude’s parents had been found prior to her death and a small exhibition had been arranged. We were given a most interesting tour around some of the significant places for Gertrude including a guided visit to the musical instrument museum. Some of us took the opportunity to spend some more days in this most fascinating and vibrant city. The concert, which eventually started, after much speechifying in German, in the university church to a packed audience was well received, though we have played better. We were joined by the marvellous boys choir directed by Christian Gössel. The concert was organised with great dedication and attention to detail by Franziska Stoff, a researcher at the university. Many of the band were hosted by colleagues and she even managed to obtain funding from the city to pay for much of the travel costs for the orchestra (unlike our city, to whom an application was also made) November 15th “Alfred”, Directed by Steven Devine with a cast including Penelope Appleyard, Kate Semmens, Joe Bolger, Sheridan Edward and narrator Dino Mahoney Violin 1: Ben Sansom (leader), Nicola Hayston, Jocelyn Slocombe, Ian Cutts, Carolyn Hall, Alan Selwyn, Michael Mullen Violin 2: Michael Jenner, Judy Taylor, Hannah Barker, Barbara Grant, Linda McDonald, Simon Hill Viola: Matthew LeMage, John Sutherland, Andrew Spencer, Debbie Miles-Johnson Cello: Louise Jameson, Mary Walton, Helen Brauer Violone: Andrew Kerr Oboe: Simon Galton, Lysander Tennant Basssoon: Mathew Dart Flute: Nick Jackman Horns: Elliot Seidman, Ed Spencer Trumpets: Tom Harrison, Katherine Smith Timps / side drum: James Bower Harpsichord: Steven Devine, Christine Thornton

This delightful work was a great hit with the band and the audience, containing wonderfully fresh and tuneful music and was immensely satisfying and great fun to perform, finishing with a flourish; Rule Britannia! The story is of course complete tosh and there exist so many different versions of the work that each airing is probably unique. Ours was glued together with great verve from a most amusing narration by Dino Mahoney. The soloists were excellent and altogether it was a great experience. A healthy audience completed the treat. Of course it was expensive to produce with a deficit of £1200 despite good ticket sales. It was decided to push the boat out with this concert to celebrate our 30 years. To be able to do such interesting work is exactly why we need to attract choirs to hire us and those need to be of a consistently good quality to invite return bookings.

December 5th “Bach Christmas Oratorio” Brighton Chamber Choir, All Saints, Hove. director Jane Money soloists Jennifer Whitton, Thomasin Trezis, Neil Jenkins, Andrew Greenan Violin 1: Theresa Caudle (Leader), Judy Taylor, Jocelyn Slocombe, Barbara Grant Nicola Jackman, Violin 2: Michael Jenner, Alan Selwyn, Ian Cutts, Linda McDonald Viola: Mike Blee, Matthew LeMage, Debbie Miles-Johnson Cello: Louise Jameson, Mary Walton, Helen Brauer BASS: Andrew Kerr Oboe/ D’amore/Da Caccia: Lysander Tennant, Simon Galton, Peter Tsoulos, Kate Cowling Bassoon: Mathew Dart Flute: Nick Jackman, Richard Austen Trumpets: Tom Harrison, Oscar Whight, Kaitlin Wild (on the day only) Timpani: TBC Chamber Organ: Peter Holman Theorbo: James Bramley

A great opportunity to perform this glorious work. It was the 25th anniversary of the choir was held in a fine church with a large and appreciative audience. March 7th “A Baroque Bouquet” St Stephens, Hampstead. Director Catherine Martin Bach Violin Concerto D min BWV 1052, Fasch Suite 3 flutes, bassoon and strings, Telemann Suite in E min from Tafelmusik for 2 flutes and strings, Muffat Armonico Tributo no 5.

Only two flutes were employed in the high quality suite from Tafelmusik, a lovely piece. A virtuosic

performance by Catherine Martin of the rarely performed – for good reason – concerto by Bach which was most exciting. As always with Catherine’s concerts, a very good, intense musical experience and a warm response from the audience. 5. TREASURER’S REPORT In the absence of Lysander, Alan Selwyn gave the Treasurer’s report. We finished the year in slight positive balance largely due to the two paid concerts though there are still some expenses to be accounted for relating to the last concert and also the uncashed cheques noted below. We also depend on the donations received from players in each concert for which gift aid can be claimed. We do not expect students or those on low income to offer donations and are grateful for everyone who is able. Without this we would not be able to continue operating into the longer term. If we are to play interesting works we will need to pay fees to professionals such as singers and brass. Professionals often very kindly agree reduced fees to perform with us but as much professional work has reduced in the last few years, we are aware we must be able to offer realistic fees and so attracting paid concerts and donations remain vital. The trip to Berlin was entirely financed from the grant from Berlin and members’ contributions and sits outside these accounts. Summaryofresults
