LINDEN HILL HAPPENINGS
Deborah M. Brady, Principal
Principal’s Message
A Note of Thanks…
There are so many activities going on at Linden
Hill due to the efforts of many volunteer staff and
families. Programs such as Lego League, Math
Club, Science Olympiad and Odyssey of the
Mind where children work in teams and engage
in problem solving would not be possible without
the efforts of volunteers. In addition, PTA
volunteers continue to work to “spruce” up the
school grounds, work at the book fair, help out in
classrooms, and donate potatoes and canned
goods in our food drives. Thank you all for your
time, dedication to children, and your community
spirit!
Community News
We continue to ask that if you are accessing
Linden Hill by car that you abide by the speed
limit, are courteous to our neighbors on New
Kent Road, and adhere to the car rider line
directions (enter via Linden Hill Village –via
Loudoun Road to New Kent Road and exit
via New Kent to Skyline). We ask that you
stick to this route and not use any other of the
roads in Linden Hill Village as you enter or
depart. In addition, as defined in the Parent
Handbook – if you are availing yourself of the
car rider line, you need to have cell phones off
when on school property.
Also, a reminder for families who drop off/ pick
up children from Boys and Girls Club – For the
safety of all, please navigate the parking lot
carefully and keep all children close by you. We
have encountered a few “fender benders” as
well as free running children.
You may have noticed the addition of visitor
parking spots to the front parking lot. The
purpose of these spots is to reserve parking for
parents/families that need to pick up for early
dismissal, etc.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Thank you for all those who met with teachers in
October. Our next conference days are
December 8 and 9. Students will be dismissed
at 1:00pm on these days. Please look for more
information to come from your child’s teacher.
Our goal is to invite every one of our families in
for a conference for the first marking period. We
believe this is an important opportunity for us to
share with each family information about the
Progress Report and the standards that have
been addressed to date. Equally as important, it
gives us a chance to share with you how your
child has progressed as an individual, a social
member of our Community, and as a learner.
School Communication
We continue to work on ways to communicate
effectively with families. Teachers provide
information in a variety of ways such as
websites, newsletters, and class e-mails.
Teachers will also accompany at least one
report card with a narrative report of your child’s
progress.
Linden Hill Information Night
Linden Hill will host an “Information Night” on
Tuesday, January 10 from 6-8 pm. This event is
for families residing in our attendance zone with
prospective Linden Hill students.
Dec/ Jan 2011- 2012 Page 2
Winter School Days
Our school nurse does a daily wind chill check
every day during the winter months. All children
go outside for recess throughout the winter
unless the wind chill temperature is below 20
degrees. Therefore, we ask that you please
make sure your child is dressed warmly enough
to enjoy this part of our instructional day. Our
expectation is that all children who are well
enough to come to school are well enough to
participate in recess. Only a note from a doctor
will excuse a child from recess, as we have no
personnel for this special coverage.
Inclement weather is also a part of this
season. If you are ever wondering about
whether school will be closed or is closing early
due to bad weather, we ask that you please
listen to the radio, television or check the Red
Clay Web site www.redclay.k12.de.us (go to
Student and Parents and click on Inclement
Weather Procedures). The Delaware
Department of Education also has a Web Site—
http://schoolclosings.delaware.gov that can be
navigated to notify you of school closings and
provide e-mail notification.
Also, if the start of school is delayed, please
know that we will be unable to accommodate
students who arrive at regular start time since
often times staff are not able to get to school
due to the inclement weather, leaving us unable
to provide coverage for these
children. Therefore, you might want to make a
late start contingency plan for your child should
this become a reality.
Lastly, transportation will generate a list of bad
weather bus stops that you should become
familiar with should road conditions not permit
access to your normal stop. This information will
also be available on the Red Clay Web site
www.redclay.k12.de.us - go to Student and
Parents and then the transportation link or
Inclement Weather Procedures). If you do not
have access to a computer, you can call the
Transportation Office at 322-0251. Thank you,
in advance, for your attention to these matters.

closings, etc.:

Choice Information
The 2012-2013 school Choice application period
closes on January 11, 2012 at 4:30 pm.
You may apply on-line at
(http://www.redclay.k12.de.us/pschoice/choicein
dex.shtml) or obtain a copy of the state Choice
Application at any public school (we have them
in our office) or the district office.
For any questions about the Choice Program
please contact:
Choice Office

At this time, please know that Linden Hill is
closed to choice.
Early Birds
Just a reminder … the school doors do not open
for students until 8:35 a.m. Consequently, there
is no supervision for students who arrive before
that time. Recently, we have noticed more
children arriving before 8:35 a.m. and are
concerned for their safety. Therefore we are
asking that you do not send your child/children
to school before 8:35 a.m. For students who
arrive by car, please keep them inside the car
until the doors open at 8:35. We also want to
remind families that if you need to pick your child
up early that you do so before 2:45 p.m. Early
dismissals after that time cause a great deal of
confusion at day’s end, interrupts ongoing
instruction for the remainder of the class, and
may take a child out of a related arts class
leaving the homeroom teacher with no
information as to where that student is. Thank
you for your attention to this procedure.
Vacations
We ask that you schedule vacations at times
when school is not is session. Vacations are
considered an unexcused absence and teachers
are not required to provide assignments in
advance.
The End of Another Calendar Year!
We began this message with a “thank you” and
as this calendar year comes to a close we would
like to reiterate our gratitude to all members of
our community for all that you do to make
Linden Hill a special place.
We would like to thank our staff, who works well
beyond the contractual day to provide children
the very best learning opportunities.
We would like to thank our PTA who has done
an outstanding job of organizing and planning
for school and family events for this school
year. We would like to thank you, our families,
for your support and partnership in the education
of your child/children. And…we would like to
thank the children who come to us each day!
On behalf of the entire Linden Hill staff, we
would like to extend our best wishes to all for a
happy holiday season.
Educationally Speaking,
Deborah M. Brady, Principal
Nathan Palkovitz, Assistant Principal

As you may be aware, the district is sending a
major capital referendum to voters in February
2012. This will directly affect Linden Hill. If the
referendum passes, there will be much needed
upgrades made to our building. In addition,
there will be plans to build a new elementary
school on Graves Road, which will affect our
feeder pattern and lessen the overcrowding here
at Linden Hill. The district has asked for several
parents to serve on a Referendum Committee.
Mrs. Brady has asked the PTA for help in filling
these positions. Please see the description
below, and let us know as soon as possible if
you are willing to help on the committee. I am
sure Mrs. Brady will be happy to answer any
questions you may have.
The committee will have an important but
focused role. They will work to provide
information regarding the referendum to families.
They will do this by doing three things:
Plan Events
Recruit volunteers (calling, organizing events)
Help Spread the Word!
While increasing the amount of taxes we pay is
never easy, this is for our children. In order to
preserve the wonderful school we have here at
Linden Hill, this moderate tax increase seems a
small price to pay. We hope you will consider
helping!
Jackie Schaus & Kim Fetrow LHE PTA Co-Presidents
The Linden Hill PTA would like to wish you and yours a very Happy Holiday Season!

From the President’s Pen
The holiday season is upon us!
And time for New Year’s resolutions… If during the new year
you are considering new ways to become involved at Linden Hill, please
know that it is not too late! Joining the PTA is one way to support our school. Membership gives you a voice in issues that directly affect your child. Attending PTA meetings is another great way to become involved. At meetings you will learn firsthand about what is happening at Linden Hill and throughout the Red Clay School District. You can share your opinions and learn about ways that you can help out. Finally, volunteering at Linden Hill is another important way that you can make a difference for your child and his or her classmates. There are many ways to help out, and all are welcome and appreciated. Please feel free to contact a PTA officer if you would like to learn more. If you are already involved at Linden Hill but would like to jump in with both feet, now is the time to begin thinking about what you would like to do. There are still opportunities for this school year, and over the next few months we will begin planning for the 2012-2013 school year. Many of our current committee chairs will be leaving Linden Hill with their fifth graders, and we will be looking for friendly faces who would like to chair committees for next year. Let us know what interests you and we will help you to learn more about it! Thank you to the many volunteers and families who continue to devote so much time and energy to activities at Linden Hill during this busy time of year. We as a PTA are grateful for your efforts, and all of the children are too. To all of the Linden Hill community, we wish you a Happy Holiday season, and a safe, healthy and joyful New Year! Jackie Schaus and Kim Fetrow Co-Presidents

CAB CALLOWAY ART WORKSHOP
with Ms. Phillips
A CAB ART WORKSHOP for fifth graders
considering the visual arts portfolio for
admittance is coming up soon. Ms. Phillips will provide skills and review in the subjects required
in the portfolio. They include a self-portrait, still life, landscape and free choice. Though
creativity is supported, CAB tends to have a focus on realistic drawing/painting skills. Three
dimensional clay or sculpture, fashion projects
need to be photographed in multiple views by the family and brought in for the final Jan
workshop. There will be snack provided since it falls directly after school 3:45 to 5:30PM on both
session nights. A student is required to sign up
in advance through a letter or email to Ms. Phillips. I also require the students to attend
both sessions, the practice orientation in December and the "bring all your portfolio
work/assessment" session in January, in which I
try to help matt work for presentation. Each participant needs to donate a large
mattboard, precut orfull size roughly 36" x 40" easily purchased in the frame department of AC
MOORE. SESSION ONE Wed. December 14th 3:45 -
5:30......What do I need to do? and practice
skills. SESSION TWO Wed. January 3rd 3:45 -
5:30 Practice assessment setting and portfolio critique of all work.
I want to extend a big thank you
to Fidelia Portillo and
Harolyn Temeng for
organizing a wonderful
book fair. These two women
worked tirelessly all week to make
sure the students had a positive experience. All
the students had a great time shopping and
browsing. I also want to thank the many
volunteers who came in to help out. Lastly,
thank you to the students and their parents for
supporting the book fair. We have 64 new books
to put on our shelves as soon as they are
processed in our library system.
Please check your child’s book bag and folder
during the week of December 12th through the
16th. The University of Delaware is once again
offering students the opportunity to get tickets to
a Men’s Basketball game. The tickets will be for
a game on Saturday, January 21, 201 as the
men play Georgia State. The program is called
BE A BLUE HEN BOOKWORM. Each student
who would like two complimentary tickets will
need to complete a bookmark after reading 3
books over the winter vacation. All bookmarks
must be returned by January 5, 2012. All
information will be on my website. Please check
my website to get information about extra
reading incentives.
Mrs. Marinelli
NEWS FROM THE MUSIC ROOM Thank you to those who have contributed stickers and treats for our music star program. These are very helpful and very much appreciated. If you would like to contribute to the music room, we are always in need of paper towels, disinfectant wipes, stickers for charts and for graded papers, and treats for music stars and band rewards. Small lollipops or dumdums are great, also Hershey kisses, smarties etc. Please no peanut butter products. The third grade trip to the Grand Opera House was a great success. All of the third grade students in Red Clay were provided this opportunity by the district and we are very grateful. The children saw and heard a performance of Peter and the Wolf and Mother Goose Suite by the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and First State Ballet. The students were prepared for this trip in music class and in third grade classrooms. They had a wonderful time and learned so much. Thank you to everyone involved!
Thank you to all the volunteers who have
made the 1st half of the year a reading success. It is never too late to volunteer -
contact Nikki Graham at [email protected] if interested.

School Store
The Cub City School Store will have its second round of shopping on January 26th and February 2nd. Each student will bring home an order form at the beginning of his/her shopping week. As students shop during their lunch period, it is helpful to have items selected prior to shopping. The first round of shopping was a big success and we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2012! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or 463-6288. Happy New Year! Tammy Jackson and Theresa Barbato
Staff Appreciation
We want to thank the 4th grade families for providing a wonderful Thanksgiving luncheon to our staff last month. November was the first month that we utilized the website Sign Up Genius to keep our donations straight. It is a fantastic website that will make things easier for the teachers and staff appreciation committee as well as folks who are signing up. In the future our goal is to send families an e-mail with the link to Sign Up Genius. If you would like to contribute to our luncheon you simply click on the link and fill in your name next to the item that you would like to donate. The Sign Up Genius will cover food donations as well as monetary and volunteers to help monitor the tables. It will enable everyone to see all contributions so there will be less overlap and fewer questions regarding what is needed. Thank you in advance for your help as well as your patience regarding the inevitable "hic-ups" that accompany trying new things. We are sure that ultimately everyone will be quite pleased with our new plan! On December 14th the PTA will be treating the staff to a holiday dessert bar. Yum! January will bring the "soup-er bowl" compliments of the first grade families. If anyone has any questions regarding the Sign Up Genius (or anything else staff appreciation related), contact Kristin Armstrong at [email protected] .
Happy Holidays, Kristin Armstrong, Karen Brakeley, Marisa Livaditis and Angie Melesecca

The following students participated in the New Castle County Summer Reading Club during July and
August. We want to recognize these students for their efforts. We encourage all our Linden Hill students
to read every day and especially during summer vacation. Remember the saying by Dr. Seuss, “The more
