Linden Meadows News September 2016 Administrator’s Message Welcome to our new and returning families! What a busy and exciting start to our school year. CTV news was on-site early on Wednesday to talk with staff and students about the upcoming year. Our UNESCO ambassadors Ahmed and Lily and our patrols represented our school beautifully, as they talked about welcoming newcomer students, creating a culture of peace and school safety! Many thanks to both Mrs. Eby, Mrs. Babiuk and Mrs. Loepp for also being part of this exciting opportunity for our school. We celebrate the connections to our UNESCO work this year with the creation of a mural, painted by local artist, Natasha Lowenthal. The mural of our Linden Tree is outside the front office and repre- sents our four pillars: Learning to Know; Learning to Do; Learning to Be and Learning to Live To- gether. Over the course of the school year, students will connect their learning in school with respect to intercultural learning, education for sustainable development and human rights education with each of these four pillars and the overall goal of working together to build a culture of peace. We invite all of our Linden Meadows families to our Meet the Teacher event on September 14 at 5:30 p.m. This is a social, “meet and greet” event and this is the second year that we will host a barbeque for all of our Linden Meadows families. It is a time to come and meet your child’s teachers, reconnect with members of the community, meet new families and see the school. It is not a time to get into deeper conversations about your children. We invite parents to contact teachers individually after Meet the Teacher if there is more information that you would like to share about your child. There is no cost for the barbeque. The food for this event has been graciously donated by the Pater- son Family and Granny’s Poultry. Linden Meadows welcomes several new staff members this year. Mrs. Eliuk is in the office as our new administrative assistant, Mr. Nepon is in the gym, Mr. Giesbrecht is in grades 5/6, Ms. Garside is in grade 5, Mrs. Becker has joined the EAL team, Ms. Nilmalgoda is in grades 7 and 8 and Mr. Weavely in his role as an educational assistant. We welcome back Mrs. Reder who is working with Mrs. D. Jordan this year. Over the summer, Linden Meadows engaged in various upgrades to our buildings and grounds. We had a new P.A. system installed throughout the school, new flooring in the Music, Band and one new classroom, walls were painted and we added one additional bottle-filler water fountain beside the MY entrance and exit doors. We are also very appreciative of the new playground areas developed by our parent advisory council group and the addition of a butterfly garden. As we said goodbye to students over the past few days, I was so pleased to hear the refrain “Best Day Ever!”, to my question, “How was your day?” It is very fulfilling to hear the excitement in the children’s voices and see their smiles as they talk about their teachers, what they are learning and reconnecting with old friends and the making of new ones! that parents bring to us in our planning Please contact your childrsquos teacher if you

are interested in helping in this regard whether it be driving on an excursion help-

ing with a special event or ldquoprepping materials (Only a few of the ways our parent

community helps us) At LM all volunteers are required to report to the office to

sign in and receive a visitor lanyard to wear for their time in the school Parents or

others who volunteer regularly are required to complete Child Abuse Registry

Forms These forms are available from our office and take approximately six to eight

weeks to be returned to us from the province Please access one of these forms in

the next week if you do plan to volunteer this year and you have not previously

filled one out

Bus Loop amp Service Road

As parents utilize the service road across the street when picking up their children we ask that vehicles take care

not to block the driveways of our neighbours Please park so that homeowners have full access to their

homes at all times of the day Please remember the speed limit along this road is only 30 kmhr

Also as the weather changes we ask that you review both the general ldquorules of the roadrdquo and a few specific ones

One of these specific rules is that pedestrians no matter how convenient cannot walk across the bus loop at

the beginning or the end of the day Another one we highlight is that we ask that cars only stop on the right

hand side of the bus loop There is no ability to pick up your child in the bus loop unless your car is pulled up to the

right hand curb side

Parents are asked to NOT get out of their cars as this blocks other parents moving through the loop Please ask

one of the adults outside to assist you if they donrsquot immediately

Hello everybody Welcome to a new year of music making I am very excited to be working with your

children

The Band Room is looking great this year with a brand new carpet and shelving installed over the

summer Please drop by and have a look when you are at the school

By now everyone in Band should have an instrument and all related equipment I have asked stu-

dents to keep flutes and clarinets in their lockers All other instruments must be stored in the Band

room during the day and should be clearly labeled with your childrsquos name on the outside of the case

It is expected that all students will take instruments home at night as daily practice (even if it is only a

few minutes) is essential to their progress

We will be running a Jazz Band two mornings a week beginning the week of September 19 for all in-

terested grade 7 and 8 students from 800 am until 840 There is a sign-up sheet outside the Band

room

Band News

We will be running a Jazz Band two mornings a week beginning the week of September 19 for all in-

terested grade 7 and 8 students from 800 am until 840 There is a sign-up sheet outside the Band

room

that parents bring to us in our planning Please contact your childrsquos teacher if you

are interested in helping in this regard whether it be driving on an excursion help-

ing with a special event or ldquoprepping materials (Only a few of the ways our parent

community helps us) At LM all volunteers are required to report to the office to

sign in and receive a visitor lanyard to wear for their time in the school Parents or

others who volunteer regularly are required to complete Child Abuse Registry

Thursday May 18th

Please remember that lunches must be pre-ordered as there are no other food sales available on Super Lunch days Please note that if your child is not part of the School Lunch Program but would like to stay for Super Lunch they will need to pay the $200 casual Lunch Program fee for those days and those can be paid at the office This is also the case for Daycare students who would like to eat their Super Lunch in their classroom instead of the Daycare

We really need parent involvement to ensure Super Lunch runs smoothly Each classroom needs 2 parent volunteers to help distribute the food and drinks to the students on the day of Super Lunch Let your childrsquos teacher know which dates you can help out on Be a part of the Super Lunch team and please volunteer If you have any questions about the program or are able to volunteer in another capacity please contact Carla Rose at casarosashawca
