1.1 IntroductionThe line/trunk group (LTG) forms the interface between the digital environment of thenode and the digital switching network (SN).The LTG perform non-central control functions and thus relieve the coordinationprocessor (CP) of routine work. Several LTG types are available for optimalimplementation of the various line types and signaling methods. The LTG typesessentially have the same basic structure and operate according to the sameprinciples. They differ only in a few hardware units and the specific applicationprograms in the group processor (GP).The connection between the LTG and the duplicated switching network (SN) is madeby a secondary digital carrier (SDC). The transmission rate on the SDC from the LTGto the SN and vice-versa is 8192kbps (abbreviated to 8Mbps). Each of these 8Mbpsmultiplex systems has 127 time slots, each with 64kbps for user and CCS7information, and one 64kbps time slot (TS0) for internal messages between LTG, CPand CCNC..The LTG always transmits and receives the speech information via both sides of theswitching network (SN0 and SN1). Both SN sides thus receive the same userinformation. The LTG only assigns the speech information from the active switchingnetwork unit to the subscriber concerned. The other SN side is designated as inactiveand can transmit and receive the current user information immediately if a faultoccurs.

1.1.2 LTG Types in D900In the D900 switch all LTG applications belong to the functional type "B".Depending on the application and age of the LTG the following hardware types maybe used in the D900 system: LTGG, oldest used type, necessary for OCANEQ and IN tasks LTGM, current standard type for all other kinds of applications LTGN, new type, replaces LTGM

TIPIn older switches another LTG hardware type can be found, the LTGB. It is not usedin newer D900 systems and will not be discussed in this chapter.

1.2 HardwareThe various LTG types basically have the same internal structure and consist of thefollowing physical or logical units. Depending on the LTG type, these units can befound on different hardware modules:

Group ProcessorThe group processor (GP) matches the incoming information from the surroundingnetwork node area to the internal message format of the system and controls all theparts within the LTG.

Link Interface Unit (LIU)The LIU connects the LTG to the duplicated SN (SN0 and SN1). The LIU convertsthe 8Mbps multiplex highway arriving from the GS into two parallel 8Mbps SDC to theSN. Conversely, it receives the user information from the switching network via twoparallel SDC. The LIU selects the data from the switching network-half designated asactive and forwards it to the GS. The LIU synchronizes the information arriving overSDC from the SN with the LTG-internal clock system and feeds the node clock(8192kHz) to the group clock generator of the LTG. It extracts the CP commandsfrom the message channel (TS0) and forwards them to the GP. In the oppositedirection, the LIU transfers GP messages to the CP. After each connection setup, theLIU verifies correct through-connection in the SN with the aid of the cross-officecheck (COC). For this purpose, the calling LIU sends a test bit sequence that isreflected by the LIU of the called side. If the transmitted and reflected bit patterns areidentical, the established connection is switched through to the subscriber.

Group Clock Generator (GCG)The GCG supplies the LTG with the required control clocks. The crystal oscillator inthe GCG is synchronized with a signal derived from the system clock in the LIU via aphase-locked loop.

Signaling Link Control (SILC) partThe Signaling Link Control (SILC) part functions as an input/output processor. TheSILC is used to connect a number of signaling channels via which either the protocolfor DLU access (DLU protocol) or the ISDN D-channel protocol for the primaryaccess (PA protocol) can be handled. The transmission protocols are based on theHDLC procedure.On the LTG side, the SILC completes the layer-2 functions of signaling protocols(synchronization, error detection, error handling) and thereby guarantees securemessage exchange between peripheral units and the GP.

Signaling Unit (SU)The SU is a logical unit of the LTG. Physically, the following subunits are possible: Code Receiver (CR)

The CR receives and detects multifrequency signals (DTMF, MFC-R2, MFC-R1). Tone Generator (TOG)

The TOG generates the audible tones required for all line/trunk units (LTU) andthe frequencies needed for multifrequency dialing (MFC).

Receiver Module for Continuity Check (RM:CTC)The RM:CTC is necessary for testing CCS7 trunks.

Line/Trunk Unit (LTU)The LTU is a logical unit of the LTG. It contains different modules for special tasks.Possible module types are: Digital Interface Unit (DIU)

The DIU is used to connect PDC systems like PCM30 or PCM24. Local DLU/DSU Interface (LDI) (1)

The LDI is used to connect a local DLU/DSU by a 4 Mbps carrier Conference Unit (COUB for LTGG or COUC for LTGM/N) (1)

Multiparty conferences require the conference unit. The COUB module can handlefour conferences with up to eight subscribers each, the new COUC module has 32ports, which can be used in any combination (e.g. one conference with 14subscribers and two with 9 subscribers. Additionally, the COUC has on board echocompensation.

Digital Echo Compensator in D900 (DEC, not possible for LTGG) (1)A DEC is necessary for connections between mobile and fixed networks tocompensate the reflection and delay occurring with this connections.

Operationally Controlled Announcement Equipment (OCANEQ, yet only LTGG)The OCANEQ is used for standard and individual announcements. It can becontrolled by the switch or by subscriber inputs (OCANEQ and Code Receivers aspart of a User Interactive Dialog UI LTG).

Automatic Test Equipment ATE in EWSDAn ATE is used for trunk testing, mainly done for trunks on analog transmissionsystems

Code Receiver (1)Additionally to the Signal Unit SU the LTU may also contain CR: Different CRtypes are possible, e.g. for MFC:R2 or push-button dialing. The max. 8 codereceivers in LTU position may exist as extra modules (LTGG) or may be integratedon other LTG modules (LTGM/N).

MDTOG in EWSD (1)This module is used to deliver the A-party number to analog wired subscribers ofthe exchange. The used method is called Frequency Shift Key FSK. A MDTOGcan be connected via SN to any analog DLU port of the EWSD exchange (poolsolution).

Group Switch (GS)The GS is a non-blocking space-time stage for 512 channels. The GS interconnectsthe LTU, SU, LIU and optional the SILC (via GP). The speech data can be attenuatedfor each channel in eight stages. Up to 64 conferences (three subscribers andaudible tones) are possible. GS for LTG with functional type B:

Beside the connection to LIU (8 Mbps), to the SU (2x2Mbps to TOG and 2Mbps toCR) and to the SILC the GS offers 8x32 ports for 8 LTU. How many of the LTU0-7can be equipped with HW modules depends on the LTG HW type. The remainingLTU can be used for specific applications which do not require HW.

GS for LTG with functional type C:Beside the connection to LIU (8 Mbps) and to the SU (2x2Mbps to TOG and2Mbps to CR) the GS offers 4x32 ports for 4 LTU. These LTU0-3 are normallyused as DIU.

1.2.1 The LTGG

1.2.1.1 The LTGG in D900In the D900 system the LTGG can be used for any task, except the connection to thePSTN, because it is not possible to install a DEC in the LTGG. Since the newer LTGcan replace almost all LTGG tasks, it is mostly used for large conferences or as auser-interactive LTG for intelligent network (IN) functions.The LTGG consists of the following functional units: Signaling Unit (SU) Five Line/Trunk Units (LTU0 to LTU4) Group Switch and Link Unit (GSL) Group ProcessorFor the basic tasks, LTU0 to LTU3 hold a DIU for connection of PCM systems. LTU4can be used for a code receiver module. For large conferences, COUB modules canbe installed in LTU0 to LTU3. Both module types can be installed simultaneously.For connecting a DSU, DLU or ISDN primary access line, the SILCB module has tobe installed. If CCS7 trunks are connected, the RM:CTC module is necessary.

As a User Interactive LTG (UI-LTG), the LTGG holds the OCANEQ (operationallycontrolled announcement equipment). It is used as an announcement system, whichcan be controlled by the subscribers with MFC or even speech.The following special modules are used: OCE:SPM (OCANEQ speech controller and memory). This module stores and

controls the text fragments for the announcements. SCR (speech and code receiver) in LTU2 to LTU4 and SU. Each SCR module can

handle 8 calls.LTU0 remains empty, modules RM:CTC and SILCB are not used.In older systems, another OCANEQ type is installed. The used modules are: OCE:SPC (OCANEQ stored program control). This module controls the OCANEQ

equipment. OCE:MUP (OCANEQ memory unit). One or two memory units can be used to

store text fragments.The OCANEQ physically builds up a sequence of logical text fragments from itsspeech memory using text fragment numbers. It allows text fragments to be readusing access by means of text fragment numbers. Each OCANEQ operates 31speech channels and enables 16384 addressable text fragments to be stored.

1.2.1.2 The LTGG in EWSDIn the EWSD system the LTGG can be used for all applications of the functionaltypes B and C except for the connection of V5.2 interfaces.The LTGG consists of the following functional units: Signaling Unit (SU) with TOG (can include RM:CTC function) and CR Four or five Line/Trunk Units

(LTU0 to LTU3 for LTGG in C function, LTU0 to LTU4 in B function) Group Switch and Line Interface Unit (GSL) Group Processor with PMU and CGSM; SILC only used in LTGG in B function

Equipping variants of LTGG: For the basic applications, LTU0 to LTU3 hold a DIU for connection of PCM

systems. For large conferences, COUB modules can be installed in LTU0 to LTU3. LTU4 can be used in LTGG in B function for:

an additional code receiver module with 8 CRPa MDTOG module

For connecting a DLU or ISDN primary access line, the SILCB module has to beinstalled.

If CCS7 trunks are connected, the RM:CTC function is necessary. It is eitherincluded in the TOG (TOGD module) or performed by an extra module.

The OCANEQ can be used as a standard or individual announcement systemintegrated in an LTGG in B function. It is controlled by the CP. The OCANEQphysically builds up a sequence of logical text fragments from its speech memoryusing text fragment numbers. It allows text fragments to be read using access bymeans of text fragment numbers. Each OCANEQ operates 31 speech channelsand enables 16384 addressable text fragments to be stored.Older HW solution:The used modules are the OCE:SPC (OCANEQ stored program control, thismodule controls the OCANEQ equipment, located in LTU 2/3) and the OCE:MUP(OCANEQ memory unit, one or two memory units can be used to store textfragments, located in LTU1-4). One OCANEQ can consist of a combination of1 OCE:SPC / 1 OCE:MUP or 1 OCE:SPC / 2 OCE:MUP.New HW solution:The used module is the OCE:SPM which includes functionality of OCE:SPC andOCE:MUP. It is located in LTU1.

1.2.2 The LTGMThe LTGM is the current standard type for EWSD and D900 systems. It is used for alltasks except connection of OCANEQ. Only three modules are necessary for acomplete LTGM with four PCM systems connected. The 4 PCM are combined together with the current converter on the module

DIU120A. Logically, this module is treated as LTU0 to LTU3 with ordinary DIU30modules. Optionally, this module can be replaced by a DIU:LDIM module toconnect to a DLU or DSU via a 4Mbps local DLU interface.

The GPL module (group processor for LTGM) holds the PMU and, if required, theSILC functionality. Two different GP modules are used:GPL, Group processor for LTGM without SILC functionGPLS, Group processor for LTGM with SILC function

The GSM (group switch for LTGM) is a combination of GSL, TOG, RM:CTC, CRand GCG. Depending on the available on board components, different GSMmodules are used. The last three digits of the GSMabc modules define the moduletype. The 4rth character (called a) designates by Y the PCM30, by Z PCM24 (notyet implemented). For the 5th and 6th character the following applies:

Frame for LTGGAN LTGG uses one half of a standard frame (F:LTGG(A)). Up to 10 LTGGs can beinstalled in a rack. Each LTG has its own direct current converter.

Frame for LTGMAs the LTGM has only three modules (four with the optional LTU:S), five LTG useone frame (F:LTGM(A)). Up to 30 LTGM can be installed in one rack. Each LTG hasits own current converter, located on the DIU120A or DIU:LDIM module.

Frame for LTGNThere are two different frame types for the LTGN. If the LTU:S function is not needed(e.g. ordinary PCM systems to other network nodes), 16 LTGN can be installed inone frame (F:LTGN(A)). Up to 64 LTG can be installed in a rack. When the LTU:S isnecessary (e.g. DEC or COUC), only eight LTG are possible (F:LTGN(B)). EachLTGN has its own on-board current converter.

LTGN concept for power supplyAll LTGN of one frame are connected to one pair of fuses. When one of the fusesfails all the LTGN keep on working using the power supply by the other fuse.

WARNINGConfiguration of an active LTG to MBL may cause system failure or loss ofcalls! The better way is to configure the LTG to conditionally blocked (CBL)first. In this state, the LTG does not accept new calls, but connected calls arenot released. Wait for about five minutes, then configure the LTG to MBL.

LTG equipment like DIU, OCANEQ or COU can only be configured from ACT to MBLif the LTG itself is already MBL. The ports of a module can only be configured to MBLvia CBL.

Not all the ports of an LTG can be configured by the CONF PORT command. E.g.ports towards a DLU will be configured implicitly when configuring the related DLUsystem.

EWSDIn EWSD, LTG (LTGG, LTGM, LTGN) work normally as TYPE=LTGB orTYPE=LTGC. The parameter LDPARP defines inside a function type the LTG softwarefile (SY.PSW.Txx) which is loaded into the group processor.The values for the parameter LDPARP are project specific and can be seen from theproject documents. The following are frequently used values for the parameterLDPARP listed here as examples:
