The University of Idaho has a policy of nondiscrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age,

sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, disability, genetic information, or status as any protected veteran or military status.

Persons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication or program information or reasonable accommodations need to contact the

Canyon County Extension by at least two weeks prior to the event at 501 Main Street, Caldwell, 208-459-6003 or [email protected].

With the beginning of 2021, it’s a good time to talk about setting goals.

Whether those goals are New Year’s Resolutions or 4-H Project Goals, it’s

always good to spend a little time writing goals that help us plan where we want

to go and that will help us grow as people.

4-H uses Project Goals to help youth learn about the goal setting process. A few

things to keep in mind while helping youth set goals: 1) Age and stage of

development of the youth, 2) Number of years the youth has been in the

project, and 3) Youth’s interests.

Youth should also learn to set goals that are achievable and realistic. The goals

they set should be something that they can control. For example, making a goal

to win Grand Champion Showman isn’t a good idea. There are too many factors

they can’t control. However, they could set a goal to learn a specific

showmanship skill.

When youth write their goals, they should remember the three parts of a goal:

Action—how you will do something

Result(s) - what you are going to do

Timetable - when you are going to do it

Examples:

After setting their goals, decide on how they will achieve these goals. These

steps become the “To Do” items on the goal sheet in their record book. At the

end of their project, they should decide how they did with their goals and record

that on the “How Did You Do” part of their project record book.

Idaho 4-H Livestock Management Skill-a-thon Contest

By: Samantha Ball

Wowza! What a crazy year it has been to say the least. You are probably just hoping for a short break

from your hectic life right about now, but the holidays and the new year are just around the corner. So,

what in the world could I possibly have to add to your plate?

Well… I am hoping to add a little advice that may make your life a little easier down the road. The 4-H

year has begun, and many youths have called their livestock producers about buying their 2021 4-H

animal. Our beef participants have their livestock and have been working with them for several weeks.

The fair season has begun!

This is the perfect time to get organized to reduce stress later in the year. All you

have to do is purchase a calendar. Which now is the perfect time! They are all out

on the shelves prepared for the new year to begin. So go, now, add it to your

grocery list. Seriously, go add it!

After you have picked up your new 4-H project calendar use it! Every time your youth does something for

their project write it down. If they bought feed include the amount and cost of the feed. If they gave their

animal a shot write it down on the day given, amount given and what was given. Keep track of meetings

attended, service projects completed, and events attended. This way, in several months when you are

trying to remember everything for your youth’s recorded book you can look to your handy dandy calendar

for all your answers! Feel free to thank me later.

as changing the sale date/time. Every 4-H club that offers any market animal project is requested to

send a representative to cast their vote at these meetings. Please find someone to represent your club at
