Linguistics with a specialisation in PhonologyMA /

The Linguistics MA with a specialisation inPhonology is a research-oriented programmedesigned for students looking for concentratedstudy in phonology, with a focus on theoreticallydriven empirical research. Students will usetypological comparison, data collection,experimental methods, or modelling techniquesand will receive extensive training in researchmethods and the scholarly presentation of ideas.

 Degree summary 

Students gain knowledge and understanding of current research inphonology and are prepared for independent research. On completionof the programme, they will be able to formulate appropriate researchquestions, find and evaluate relevant literature, develop and test newhypotheses, and produce cogent, structured and professionallypresented reports.

The teaching and assessment of this programme is stronglyresearch-oriented. It is delivered through a combination of lectures,small-group teaching and a virtual learning environment. Some modulesalso involve workshops or practical classes. Assessment is throughtake-home and unseen examination, essays, presentations, assignmentsand the dissertation.

 Degree structure 

Mode: Full-time: 1 year; Part-time: 2 years

Location: London, Bloomsbury

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programmeconsists of five pathway modules (75 credits), three optional modules(45 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits).

DISSERTATION/REPORT

// All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in adissertation of 10,000 words.

 Your career 

Although the degree can be an end in itself, this advanced programmeis an excellent preparation for independent doctoral research inphonology. Graduates from our specialised Master's programmes inlinguistics have a very strong track record of securing funded doctoralstudentships and have in recent years gone on to research at UCL, MIT,Cambridge, University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and the UniversitatAutonoma de Barcelona.

Employability

This Linguistics MA equips graduates with the necessary skills to carryout research in the subject of phonology.

 Entry requirements 

Normally a minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree from aUK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard isrequired.

English language proficiency level

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, youwill be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level ofEnglish proficiency.

The level of English language proficiency for this programme is: Good.
