Message from the editorI shall be stepping down as Editor of The Link in the middle of next year. As a result, we need someone to take over this role. Ideally this person should be in place by March 2017, so that they have time to learn the ropes. It is an interesting and rewarding job, that provides a valuable service to our villages. As Editor, you get to know a lot of interesting people and learn much about what is happening in each of the four villages. If you, or someone you know (not necessarily a regular church-goer), would be interested in learning how to edit a community magazine like The Link, please get in touch. I can provide full training/mentoring during and after the handover period, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Church mattersListening to the Story A friend wrote to me recently of her experience of working as a volunteer with the refugees who arrived in England from the camp in Calais – the Calais Jungle. She spoke of how emotionally tiring it was to hear the stories of the huge psychological and spiritual damage done to those who had fled their own country and eventually reached Calais. The account of a boy who had watched his father and brother shot dead and of the mother and sister he had left behind in Pakistan had a particularly strong impact on her.

At the heart of my friend’s response is empathy, a willingness to listen openly and to receive as a gift the stories and experiences others bring. She and her husband have spent a number of years working with vulnerable and marginalized people in Bangladesh, so receiving displaced people as brothers and sisters is a strong instinct and commitment for them.

Of course, there are thousands of such stories. Hearing them doesn’t solve the complex issue of migration, but they can change our perceptions of it. In listening to individuals, we meet human pain and vulnerability face to face. Perhaps we recognize in it our own humanity – in our stories of rejection, of persecution – of insecurity – albeit, for the most part, on a very different scale.

At the heart of our celebration of Christmas is another story of a child, who was born in a stable. Shortly afterwards he was forced to flee into Egypt with his parents to escape Herod’s persecution and threat to kill all male children under the age of two years.

This story of Jesus is also the story of one who lived as an itinerant preacher and healer, who had ‘nowhere to lay his head’; a human being who, ‘came to his own people, and his own people would not accept him’. (St John Chapter 1 verse 11).

As we hear again the story of God’s coming to the world as a human child, may this story also have the power to transform us and open us to receive the gift of God’s life in friend and stranger?

Wildlife in our churchyardsDennis Toon was churchwarden of Little Comberton. He died earlier this year, and his funeral took place on 17th March. At that point there were a number of gifts given in memory of Dennis. It was his desire that the churchyards of our parish should flourish as places of wildlife, plants and creatures. The parish is grateful to have received about £1,000 in his memory. This will be used to buy wildflower seeds and to build log piles in our churchyards. We are grateful to Jean and Peter for their support in this.

Our villagesSchool newsThe start of a new school year is always very exciting; full of new possibilities, exciting opportunities we have yet to find out about and – inevitably – a series of unique challenges to keep us on our toes!

This doesn’t seem to have daunted the children at Elmley Castle CE First School, who are definitely tackling the new year with enthusiasm. Every one bounced in at the start of September looking very grown up and responsible – highly excited to be reunited with classmates, and looking very smart in their new school uniforms and shiny shoes!

It has been a privilege for me, as the new Executive Headteacher at ECFS, to be part of such an enthusiastic start. The atmosphere in school is definitely upbeat. Everyone is very optimistic about this school year and what we will achieve for each one of our pupils – and the school as a whole.

Even now, with the first half term behind us, I am constantly impressed by the calm environment, the excellent manners of the children, the focus on learning and achievement and the amazing facilities – especially the school field and

Forest School area. This is a school to be proud of.

I am looking forward to getting to know everyone even better. I want to work with our families and the school community to ensure that this school continues to grow and provide a robust and relevant education for all our students.

Regardless of the challenges ahead, I know we will all reach the end of July with a smile on our faces, knowing we have achieved a job well done!

Claire Davies Executive Headteacher

Elmley Castle, Bricklehampton & Netherton Parish CouncilAt our meeting held on 3rd November 2016 Karen Mackison and Mark Axtell-Powell were co-opted onto the Parish Council. I would like to extend a warm welcome, and believe that their diverse experience will benefit the Parish.

We are looking for an honorary tree warden. One of the features of our villages is the lovely array of public trees. From time to time we encounter a few issues – such as the diseased rowan trees in Main Street at present. We are in contact with Wychavon about this. If you are interested in this role please let our clerk, Lynne Yapp, know by email at [email protected] Details of what the position entails will be posted on our web site shortly: www.elmleycastle.org.uk

Due to the retirement of Barbara Peacock as our Parish Clerk we recently advertised for a new clerk. I am delighted to welcome Lynne Yapp as our new Parish Clerk. Many of you will know Lynne as the clerk of Little Comberton and Great Comberton.

I would like to place on record my sincere thanks, on behalf of the Parish Council, for all Barbara’s guidance and hard work in fulfilling the role so effectively over the last 13 or so years.

Denys Shaw (Chair)

Stray catWe are looking for the owner of this very talkative tabby tom cat who loves to roll over and over to show that he is friendly. He is a frequent visitor who enjoys bed, breakfast and an evening meal with us, popping in and out of the cat door as he pleases. If you know anyone who has lost this lovely cat perhaps you would contact us before we take steps to adopt him and make this his permanent home!

Abba Sensation – into the 80sWhat a fabulous night we had!

100 locals, relatives and guests had a super evening, dancing and singing to the hits of Abba and the 1980s. A lot had raided the loft and were surprised to see that their 80s clothes still (nearly) fitted. It all contributed to a wonderful party atmosphere with Sensation putting on a memorable performance.

There were some excellent raffle prizes including meals at local pubs and an outstanding gift of dinner for six at The Pudding Club, Three Ways House, Mickleton. This was auctioned in two lots adding £250 to raise the total to £1,010 towards the maintenance of the fabric of St Mary’s Church, Elmley Castle. Our thanks to all our helpers – we could not do it without you, and particularly to our audience who all made sure we enjoyed ourselves.

full with members of the Young Farmers’ Club. Friday night was for the locals, jammed in like sardines, passing pints over people’s heads, not bothering to count the change in the gloomy light. Tony’s parents, Fred and May, presided over the lounge bar at weekends. The Shoot also came in, as did the Cricket Club with its vast enamel jug of ale shared round. In the corner was the ‘racing bench’ for the punters on Saturdays, the table top covered with a forest of bottles. There were still a few market gardeners, with their little huts and sometimes cider sheds. Some locals lived in the same village, even the same house, all their lives, such as Lena Bury, and Beryl Watkins, who died recently aged 91. There was a strong sense of community which has gradually dissipated. Nowadays the village street can be packed to the gunnels with the cars of ramblers; and people visiting for a pub lunch.During this period four Diocesan Bishops, and five parish priests have come and gone. Two small housing estates were built at the bottom of the village. We have had a new village hall, but later attempts to run a village shop have foundered. Many of these things, of course, are folk memories, and once a village loses them it also loses its sense of identity and becomes just a postcode, as a local elder said to me. However, may Elmley still flourish especially the church, school, pub, sports and other activities. We shall miss you: the place, but even more the people and the friends we have made. Don’t forget that the coffee pot is always on at Cherry Orchard!

Brian and Lesley Druce.

Forty-six years ago we moved from multi-racial inner Manchester to beautiful South Worcestershire. Bredon Hill and its villages became a very special place for us. Each one had its own character and identity; life was more stable and settled then, as were the workplaces. Elmley Castle was noted for its three public houses: the Old Mill, which had a restaurant; the Plough cider house; and of course the Queen’s. A pint of Marston’s bitter then was twelve and a half pence, (half a crown), so you could drink a gallon for a pound, and no doubt some people did! On Wednesday nights the bar was

FeaturesMaggs Day Centre, WorcesterWe work with homeless and vulnerable people to raise self-confidence, thereby enabling positive life change.

Last winter members of our Parish generously contributed food and money to support the Emergency Night Shelter which operates at Maggs Day Centre when night temperatures drop below zero. Unfortunately the night shelter only has sufficient resources to provide a hot drink for its users but your donations meant that we could supplement this with sandwiches and fruit which were very much appreciated. This year, we will be repeating the exercise with a grant from the PCC, and again, there will be boxes in each of our churches for donations of specific food items needed to provide the day centre lunches (see separate notice). We thought you might like to know more about the excellent work taking place at Maggs thanks to the commitment and dedication of the staff and volunteers. Maggs Day Centre, whose patron is The Bishop of Worcester the Right Reverend John Inge, opened its doors in St. Alban’s Church, Deansway on the 21st December 1985. The centre was created in memory of John Maggs, a homeless man, who died sleeping rough on the streets of Worcester in 1984. Originally the centre was open for six days a week but because of funding cuts this has now been reduced to five (Sunday to Thursday). As well as receiving breakfast and a hot lunch, the homeless and the vulnerable are offered a place of warmth and safety, with facilities to shower and wash their clothes. Among the many other services offered are:• Help with overcoming addiction,

mental health problems and bereavement

• The services of health professionals

• Assistance in finding permanent accommodation

• Assistance in securing employment• Mentoring and befriending• Classes in various aspects of life

skills, such as Cooking and IT• Courses in subjects like Art and

Creative Writing

Maggs Clothing Project, which is run from separate premises in Sansome Place, provides clothing for homeless people, and starter packs of household items for those moving off the streets into permanent accommodation. Donations of good quality items for this project are always welcome.

The Countryside: Dead stoat makes lasting impression

At a first glance, the National Biodiversity Network seems to suggest that the stoat is universally distributed in Britain but this is misleading. At a higher map resolution you can see that in midland England the stoat is far from common and there are large areas of open country that it may be absent from. Enshrined in this is the question of how close to reality biological records are; the fast athletic stoat easily escapes notice. Stoats have an average lifespan of under two years so populations may soon wax and wane. This makes a dependable food supply essential for survival.

The relationship between people and carnivores has not been a good one. Kielder Forest in Northumberland has been selected as the site for the trial reintroduction into Britain of the European Lynx. It took me until 2015 to finally see a wild lynx and it leaves an unforgettable impression. The stoat is an ancient survivor and I was able to show from teeth marks on domestic fowl bones that they were in the Carrant valley about 250ad, and were killing chickens by Pershore Abbey about 1250ad.

The stoat has probably now declined in this area if the number of observations are representative. There are records from Great Comberton and Little Comberton during 2016 and in 2014 one was observed taking a rabbit at Elmley Castle. However, stoats are probably widespread on Bredon Hill, which serves increasingly as a refuge for wildlife. Some years ago I parked myself against one

In 2015 a total of 652 people used the centre.

On June 2nd 2016, Maggs Day Centre was awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, which is often described as the MBE of the voluntary sector.

Food for thought It is said that any one of us is only two ‘events’ away from becoming homeless.

of its drystone walls only to be greeted by the disembodied trills and barks that confirmed a stoat breeding site.

The stoat is also inquisitive and clever. Its hypnotic elastic dance-of-death can mesmerise a rabbit to the point where it is scarcely aware it has been attacked. During the 1970s water pipes about 40 feet long were stacked at Wick. A stoat appeared, standing upright at the end of one so I decided to view it through the pipe. This resulted in a singularly odd interactive game that lasted several minutes with the stoat and myself viewing each other through the pipe, then Meerkat-like above it, then back through the pipe again until finally the stoat decided to run down it. I anticipated it would appear suddenly nearby, but the stoat foxed me – it turned round and disappeared, not to be seen again.

Stoats are not immune from predatory eagles, goshawks, large owls and domestic cats but they do have a very effective defense mechanism which I discovered at great personal cost when dissecting a dead one. Glands secrete a thick yellow fluid which smells rather like cabbage cooked for a week in sulphur; something else that leaves a lasting impression.

P. F. Whitehead

For indoor gardenersIf you have ever grown African violets then you know that the flower’s colours can be wonderful, but how often disappointment follows when they fade and fail to flower again. Try watering the plant with the tepid water in which you have boiled eggs for your breakfast. Enough calcium leaches out of the eggshells to give the violets a boost and the flowers an extra florescence.

Help neededWe need your empty washing up tablet boxes.

Recycle them for DESO – A little charity which does a lot.

DESO (Disabled Equipment Sent Overseas) recycles equipment for disabled people – wheelchairs, walking sticks, crutches etc. – used for a short while and then sitting useless in attics, garages or cellars, and works in other ways to empower disabled people in Ghana.

Shipping and distributing the equipment costs £10,000 a year. One way people can support this is by collecting small change – which also tends to accumulate and sit idle. In the DESO spirit we plan to recycle plastic containers - that detergent tablets and sachets come in – as collection boxes.

Please save these for us and ask your friends to save them too. Contact Jean Toon on 710347 for details on collection points.
