Dear Friends, Happy New Year to you! I don’t like making New Year’s resolutions mostly because I know that I am likely to break most of them by 4th January! However, this year I am going to be brave and tell you what my hopes are for us as church communities in this part of God’s wonderful world. They aren’t ‘resolutions’ as such, but I suppose I am ‘setting out my stall’ for what I want to commit to as your incumbent priest in the year ahead. So, here goes….brace yourself! I am committing myself to the national Church of England’s agenda of ‘Setting God’s People Free’. Not every C of E report gets the adrenalin flowing around my body, but this one has – I think it’s right ‘on the money’ in terms of the Church in England’s response to the situation it finds itself in. (If you would like to read more about it, you can do so at https://www.churchofengland.org/SGPF) In short, the report identifies the need for two shifts in culture and practice that are critical to the flourishing of the Church. They are: 1. Until, together, ordained and lay, we form and equip lay people to follow Jesus confidently in every sphere of life in ways that demonstrate the Gospel we will never set God’s people free to evangelise the nation.
2. Until laity and clergy are convinced, based on their baptismal mutuality,
that they are equal in worth and status, complementary in gifting and
vocation, mutually accountable in discipleship, and equal partners in mission,
we will never form Christian communities that can evangelise the nation.
I suspect you are already aware of my enthusiasm for such an agenda; you may recall me talking about ‘Triangles and Fried Eggs’ a lot last year, and trying to twist people’s arms into thinking about the Founda-tions in Christian Ministry (FiCM) Course, and prayer walking between Ascension and Pentecost to pray ‘Thy Kingdom Come’.
4
Continued from p3
Well, there’s more where that came from! I want us to take a serious look this year at the way we understand ourselves as ‘church’, as ‘disciples of Jesus’, as ‘lay or clergy’, and at the ways in which we live out our faith Monday to Saturday. I want us to be challenged to think differently, to move out of our comfort zones and re-evaluate what we think we are capable of in the service of God. So, here’s a taste of what’s coming:
During Lent, there will be a 4 week Lent course called ‘Grass Roots Disciples’ (preliminary details in this issue). I’m expecting at least 40 church-goers from all across the Mis-sion Community to be at it.
I will continue to plug the FiCM course (details in this issue) and am expecting some to sign up for it this year. It’s quite a big commitment but if we take following Jesus seriously then, frankly, there are times when we simply need to adjust our priorities.
I hope we might have another ‘Vision Day’ like we did in 2014, when we can come together and have a broader conversation around ‘identity’ – who are we as the body of Christ and what does it mean for us to be the body of Christ in this place?
There will be another Sermon Series in June and July but it won’t be Marc and I preaching – it will be some of you sharing with us your favourite passages from Scripture and why they mean so much to you.
To help all this happen and to ensure I don’t ‘get in the way’, I shall be clearing off for a bit in 2019. This coming year marks the 10th anniversary of my ordination and Bishops encourage their clergy to take a 3 month Sabbatical and properly lay down their responsibilities for a while. So, I shall be doing that after Easter. It won’t be a holiday – I am committing myself to seeking Christ’s face during this time, as I hope we all can together in the year ahead. God has more for us than we are currently experiencing but, as the title of John Ortberg’s book so aptly puts it, ‘If you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat!’ May God ‘set us all free’ in the year ahead, Ci

A Prayer for the Year ahead
Our Father in heaven, may your name indeed be hallowed. May your kingdom come, your will be done, as in heaven so in our nation, as in heaven so in our fields and cities, our homes and streets, our schools and offices, our factories and clubs, our hospitals and hospices, as in heaven so in our church, as in heaven so in our hearts and minds and spirit. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen

Morning Prayer Revd Chris and Revd Marc meet twice weekly for Morning
Prayer. We meet from 9am until 9.30am at Talaton Church on
Tuesdays and Whimple Church on Thursdays. Anyone is wel-
come to join us. We use a simple liturgy based on the Morning
Office from ‘Celtic Daily Prayer’, the prayer book of the North-
umbria Community. This includes a reading from both the
Psalms and the New Testament. It’s a great way to start the
day!
There will be no Morning Prayer on either 1st or 3rd January.
St Mary’s Church, Whimple ‘Sacred Space’
A short service in the Celtic tradition.
We use a simple liturgy and allow plenty of silence for prayer and for
reflection on a reading from one of the Gospels.
All welcome.

First Band, First Song: The Beginnings of David Bowie Available as an after-dinner speaker, Rev. Alan Dodds has an amazing story to tell. He started David Bowie’s first band, The Konrads, and wrote his first recorded song.
For up to 30 minutes, Alan will share his experience through the performance of rock ’n’ roll covers, photos of Bowie and the band, stories, inside information and a Q&A session.
He’ll share the tale of a blind date in ’64 that changed his life, led him to his Christian faith, and eventually to the vicarage. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and reminisce.
The talk is particularly suited to an audience who can remem-ber the 50s and 60s!

Lent Course 2019 – Grass Roots Disciples
The Diocese of Exeter’s vision is to ‘Pray, Grow Disciples and Serve the people of Devon with joy.’ Last year’s Lent course was about Prayer; this year’s course will be about growing as disciples. It will be an informal, social and encouraging four session learning series for us, as we look to continue and develop our Christian journeys; to be empowered as disciples, explore the God-given opportunities for growth and mission in the world around us and expand our understanding of our faith, and calling. It will be held at Talaton Parish Hall on some Tuesday evenings in March and April at 7.30pm. More details to follow but please get the following dates into your diaries.
Week 1 – Tuesday 12th March 2019 Week 2 – Tuesday 19th March 2019 Week 3 – Tuesday 26th March 2019
Week 4 – Tuesday 9th April 2019
13
This is last year’s poster. The current one is not yet available but
the course will run from Sept 2019 to June 2020, with applica-
tions to be in by Easter 2019. If you are stirred by this, please
speak to Revd Chris before contacting Revd Dave Carrington at
SWMTC.

‘IF’ by Rudyard Kipling
These are the first two verses of the famous
and brilliant poem by RK. The last two verses
will feature in February’s Link:
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt
you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too
wise;
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same: If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spo-ken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools;

PRAYER DIARY
January 2019
Prayer for the month:
Pray for co-operation around the world in 2019 regarding
environmental problems and for more work to be done by
governments.
The most pressing issues are reducing carbon emissions
which has to be addressed with great urgency, dealing
with plastic waste, reducing pollution levels and doing
much more to help biodiversity.
