Linked thinking for the product LifecycLe management of the future

Results Paper for CONWEAVER GmbH Workshop on 11112016 in Darmstadt

The Linked Data Workshop took place on 11 November 2016 Forty participants made their way to the darmstadtium Conference Centre for an exclusive participation workshop on the subject of ldquoLinked Thinking for the Product Lifecycle Management of the Futurerdquo

The discussions were based on the following questions

bull As an innovation driver for the economy how can the manufacturing industry keep pace in the digital era with respect to transparency internal processes and the networking of products and services

bull How can it be made possible for employees to obtain cross-domain information and dependencies within an organisation and beyond

bull How can product lifecycle management be adapted to these new requirements

After a motivational introduction by hosts Sebastian Doumlrr and Dr Thomas Kamps (both from CONWEAVER GmbH) the workshop opened with a successful keynote speech by Mr Michael Schneider (Head of Enterprise amp Engineering Platforms Department at Robert Bosch GmbH) who is an enthusiastic customer of the Linked Data Search solution from CONWEAVER

New approaches to product lifecycle management -mechanics electronics software - linked automaticallyThe speaker started by explaining what made the company look for a solution in the first place The focus was on looking for a solution which would be able to support all the mechatronic domains (mechanics electronics software) in a professional way The solution needed to be from a single source and be able to connect to the existing software and ways of thinking This challenge was successfully overcome with Linksphere Terra and the Linked Data Search solution based on it

This meant the company employees no longer had to restrict themselves to a known IT system they could use all the linkednetworked information belonging to an artefactobject for their application Comprehensive standardisation of the artefacts (or the master data) is superfluous as only what is most essential needs to be standardised In future even non-structured data can be found and incorporated into the processing of a task Long-term legibility of the artefacts can also be guaranteed in order to provide the required level of traceability

Product complexity is increasingbull Products are increasingly linked

and there is more internal and external cooperation

bull Engineering is also happening in the cloud

bull Cross-linking of data products and services is on the rise

This increasing complexity also means increased requirements in terms of documentation and data management which can now be met using Linked Data Even now it is clear that autonomous product documentation and product development is becoming a reality Automated networked data - Linked Data - is a good first step in this direction which can already be taken today

After this introductory key-note speech the participants were split into four World Cafeacutes which highlighted the subject from four perspectives so that all the participants were eventually given the opportunity to discuss all the aspects

In each company there is a tension between the growing IT landscapes - where PLM is understood as an IT system - and the integration of new solutions for current challenges in these IT landscapes

ChallengesThe aim is to enable a shared view of information data and relationships as mechanics and electrics are no longer independent of one another Earlier bridges in the form of manual transfer were sufficient There is a need for a cross-silo view with respect to time function and collaboration and transparency on the ldquofinding methodsrdquo ie how hits are generated Openness changeability and replaceability of systems functions and processes are must-haves for the future strategy for the procurement and use of systems Flexible collaboration platforms are required for increasingly interdepartmental internal and external cooperation

It is still seen as a challenge that the users have no central point of entry into the system and ldquoGooglerdquo is often used as the central point of entry on the internet Secure traceability with respect to product safety and liability archiving and elimination of information is required Where possible it should be possible to develop individual components largely independently of one another The aim is to create added value for the customers which combines information price quality and new products and services

Simplicity should be guaranteed and must be supported as there is already too much complexity in IT systems which needs to be reduced Often developers and users cannot cope with the programs and use just a fraction of the available functionality If new IT systems are to be integrated they must be simple to use as then they can genuinely be utilised by the users

Speed drives everything quicker adaptation to new solutions is of significant importance to the success of an organisation In order to reach this required speed IT departments often roll out their applications as what are known as 80 solutions In the automotive industry this is meeting with resistance among those responsible for development who are not willing to accept 80 solutions At this point there are two philosophies in conflict with one another which leads to heated discussions in this environment what is the better strategy The product maintenance phase is to be supported as is data feedback for product optimisation It is necessary and must be possible for represent a lsquodigital twinrsquo

Introducing a new IT system means complex migration user training and generally generates a certain amount of resistance among the users But if the system is linked from the bottom up the benefit is that virtually no user training is required However there are then many individual systems for which operation and maintenance must be guaranteed

If Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is not considered an IT solution but rather as a philosophy then PLM becomes about the orchestration of processes data systems and people within a company In future PLM will show how products are to be handled

Questions which need to be answered

bull How can I record the customer requirements accurately

bull How can I design a global support systembull How replaceable is a PLM system

Is it possible to migrate to a new system bull How can I connect small companies

start-ups to big players in the old economybull How flexible are we with respect to

cooperation with external partnersbull How can I walk the tightrope between

standardisation and flexibility

UsabilityAll users want simple user interfaces But what the users perceive as simple can vary massively The complexity of the system needs to be behind the scenes what the user sees needs to be structured and simple All users have a specific perception of processes and information Complexity always arises when the user does not remain on the original interface and instead clicks through to the depths of the system (legacy system core system) In order to find there way around here users need specialist knowledge

How can we achieve usability when we need to consider different data and data formats and their respective contexts We have massive amounts of data but the context is different for every user or it is even role-specific

Normally an engineer only considers a specific context If he is working on a sunroof he wants to see all the systems which are affected by it and share this knowledge with others irrespective of where this information (control unit crush protection etc) is saved

Linked DataIf queries are posed today in a self-learning system with a digital brain previously unknown partnerspeople can be found who would not hitherto have belonged to the network

So linked data is a bridge builder an enabler between the silos People who did not previously know one another can now work together and improve the pooling of know-how to work towards targets and raise quality

All users expect the results to be right for thembull How trustworthy is the information especially when the system is learning and changing all the timebull How do we handle itbull What do we do with this wealth of extra knowledge and where do we save it and how can we share it with others

user experience and user benefit- the user VieW -

PeopleEven a clever system is just an assistant to peoplebull How can we resolve the problem of human anxiety through the role of sovereignty

of knowledgebull The anxiety that employees are no longer the data kings and could therefore

be replacedbull How do we deal with ensuring search results are also subject to data protection bull Can search results also be different Or do they even have to be

Data protection versus personalised search results is an important point for discussion here User behaviour cannot actually be logged as it could be used not only for the benefit but also to the detriment of the user This distinction is considerably more difficult within organisations than in a private context How much cultural change do we allow and how much is sensible

TrustSome employees want to see the same thing today as they saw yesterday when they run a search They need transparent clarity over long periods Other people have other tasks and as a result other requirements ie they want the results displayed to be dynamic and up-to-date or they want to share them with other people

Where do we allow dynamism and where do we need consistency and clarity Is the data complete and can I see what I need Can I trust the data shown

Today in the community it is normal to ask a question to get a quick 100 answer The various results must be filtered to produce the relevant results in order to decide which are to be used Today we do not use these options very often but they need to be discussed when it comes to Linked Data What is the expectation of the information sought and what information is still approved How do we handle this dynamic and this tightrope walk

it concepts and fLexibiLity - the impLementation VieW -There are two different strategies for tackling a roll-out either a rudimentary system can be used as the starting point which offers a great deal but not everything

Or by contrast you can start with a complete fully-functioning system The decision as to the roll-out strategy depends on the company culture and the approach normally taken thus far

But it is certain that without use cases there will be no prioritisation for the implementation of new software or the software solutions based on it

Can you start without use cases at all One idea is to begin with what is known with a start configuration as the working method of the systems used in a company is knownHow are they already networked where applicable and where are they used

Agility openness and additional costsImplementation is never wholly complete as there are always new use cases to be found The agile development of the IT system is one of the options If the user would rather have small implementation scopes (expansion phases) an incremental development is a very good option System openness is crucial for connecting systems but not all software manufacturers support this

The providers of proprietary systems could be the losers as this could mean their data access mechanisms are bypassed So if openness is required in order to be able to integrate the systems this could be a reason for additional costs being incurred which is the opposite of openness

IT and businessFor a consistent enterprise wide data model the language of the employees in the various departments must be consistent or employees must understand what the others mean Engineers speak a different language to IT so users need to be made more sensitive

IT needs to understand what the business terms mean as the user language should be the most important

A single data model across the company is actually much too slow and convoluted

A level of abstraction is required in order to ensure the system is future-proof What is required is something light dynamic and quick which links the systems to one another in order to view the current data and understand what has changed

There must be consideration of data pots as the adapted networking rules ensure that navigation is possible beyond the system level

wwwconweavercom copy CONWEAVER 2016mf

Where does the complexity come from system boundaries are blurring (everything is connected) so there is increasing complexity in the processes If the increased (internal and external) customer requirements in terms of consistency and speed are taken into consideration then it becomes clear that the demands made off IT are also considerably raised This increased complexity cannot be reduced it can only be managed Linked Data is an opportunity to overcome system boundaries create transparency and manage this complexity Modularisation and flexibility provide the required speed

But the discussion on data networking is not just about searching

While the ldquoSearchrdquo is an important element with respect to product data management ldquoCreaterdquo and ldquoChangerdquo are also often cited as additional requirements The expectation of a search is that it will delivery clear results quickly Data quality is increased as inconsistencies are highlighted and answers are received to questions which were not asked

Process managementAnother requirement is automatic information on changes to items without an active search by the users

Example of change workflow What happens before a drawing is approved In equipment construction this is important information It allows an employee to see what is happening and thus reduces the throughput time and also the time to market

Securing process qualityIs a more precise workflow required or can a community achieve this as with open source software in order to make processes more dynamic From quality-gate controlled processes to dynamic processes with simultaneous online quality transparency so the process status what percentage is already approved and the status of the system as a whole are all viewable online

OptimisationDecentralised process sovereignty is good in the sense of loose connections but the process stages need to be set up consistently in order to achieve the overall process objective By overlaying different process workflows it becomes possible to make comparisons across department boundaries and project limits This makes working methods transparent In conjunction with search enquiries it becomes clear what the information requirements for the employees are With the help of these reports processes can be optimised as they are based on the right information

Are processes still necessary at all Or in future will it be sufficient if information elements are available to everyone and everyone can find the right information at the right time

UsersFor the data and working results of an employee to be searchable they need to enter further meta-data about their artefact This is more effort most users are not prepared to make So it is ideal if a system can find the meta data without further input from the user

After summarising the results of the individual World Cafeacute tables the day was rounded off with an interesting piece by actor Oliver Grytzmann He helped to develop ideas on how to take the current situation in organisations which are not pursuing Linked Data to a place where all the data is sensible networked and automatically linked He demonstrated to the spellbound auditorium with a touch of humour that ldquoevery change needs a herordquo and how everyone can learn a little more act like the hero in order to achieve a ldquobetter tomorrowrdquo for all the people in the organisation

The workshop was a well-rounded day with time for exchange and discussion for shared thinking and explanation of some aspects Feedback from participants was positive across the board

All users expect the results to be right for thembull How trustworthy is the information especially when the system is learning and changing all the timebull How do we handle itbull What do we do with this wealth of extra knowledge and where do we save it and how can we share it with others

of knowledgebull The anxiety that employees are no longer the data kings and could therefore

be replacedbull How do we deal with ensuring search results are also subject to data protection bull Can search results also be different Or do they even have to be
