Open Geodata

• Open systems enable collaboration and engagement– Croud sourcing– Enable hidden experts, professional amateurs– Open APIs to support mashups & third-party apps– Cuts down overall costs– Helps to found new, innovative businesses

• Incentives– Private companies: impact, reach, innovation, croud sourcing– Government: efficiency, economic stimulus, open society

Many donations of geodata:- TIGER (US)- plan.at (AT)- AND data (NL, China, India)- many regional/state governments (Germany, Italy, France, CH, ...) ...

Bing launched a small gameTo help connect housenumbers to streets which theywill donate back to OSM

Linked Open Geodata

• Map featuresa) Geometric (points, polygons, relations, tags, etc.)b) Abstract features (street, building, bus stop, elevator...)

– Most abstract features are described somewhere elsee.g. Wikipedia, CIA world fact book, open gov data, ...

– Need to link to geo features from other entities on the web

• Maps– Map should be able to integrate LOD from other sources

(layer)– Static (more or less) vs. real-time information such as

traffic, weather, statistics, etc. How to cope with this?

– Open vocabularies and APIs needed

Page 15: Linked Open Geodata Keynote by Andreas Langegger

Linked Open Geodata could support OGD• Most government datasets have geo references

– POIs (e.g. administrative and public buildings)– Statistical datasets– Financial datasets– Events

• Linked Open Data could facilitate– Showing any geo-referenced data on a map

• POIs, boundaries, labels...• + Styling (e.g. MapCSS)• + Events (API)

– Integration of linked data from other sources– Facilitate analysis by queries (SPARQL + Addons)– Rendering maps for statistics, financial data, ...
