Linton's Men's Shed

Receives $60,000

Funding

Every Man Needs a Shed

Minister for Families and Chil-

dren Jenny Mikakos visited the

Linton Men’s Shed last week to

announce $903,000 to build or

upgrade 29 men’s sheds as part

of the 2018-19 Men’s Sheds

funding round.

Linton locals currently use a twin

garage as their shed but has re-

ceived $60,000 to move to a site

further down the Glenelg

Highway, where a purpose-built

facility will be constructed.

Linton Men's Shed President Michael Hough reported the shed has twenty-five members with a number of

casual attendees who also use the facilities from time to time. The group has been operating for about four

years after taking a year to get people together, to form a committee and it has gradually grown from there..

The group is thrilled with the announcement of this funding that they applied for about six months ago. These

funds will now mean they have the funds to start the building of their new shed but will they still require more

money to complete the project so they will need to raise more funds.

The Linton Shed project is one of nine brand new sheds, along with those in Rutherglen, Rowville, Penshurst,

Trentham, Leongatha, Mount Martha, Mildura and Heathcote with a further 20 existing sheds to be refurbished.

A further $116,000 has been provided to the Victorian Men’s Shed Association to help lead the sector and pro-

mote growth within the Victorian network.

Men’s sheds improve the health and wellbeing of participants by promoting social inclusion and providing a

place for locals to meet, make social connections and actively participate in their local communities.

There are more than 1,000 sheds across the country, with more than 360 in Victoria.

Details and contact information for Men's Shed locally are: Linton & District Mens Shed Inc., 2 Grant Street,

Linton. Contact: Bennita Hough - Phone: 0490 773 664. Activities: Wed 11am - 3pm Woodwork, metal work,

Uniting Care Buddies Program The Buddies program assists adults with a disability to increase their social and recreational options. Volunteers are matched to an adult who has a disability on a one to one basis or can participate with group activities. The aim of this program is to improve the life of people with disabilities who have limited family and social contact and who may be at risk of being socially isolated from the general community by offering them companionship and the opportunity to reach their full potential. Volunteers assist clients to make positive choices, which in turn, helps to open up options, which will help to meet some of their social and recreational needs. This program is funded through a DHS HACC program specifically for people with a disability. People wishing to become a volunteer are required to undergo an assessment, police check and attend training. Once they are approved, volunteers are provided with ongoing support and supervision. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with Buddies, please contact: Rose-Marie on 5335 3502.

Handy Household Hint : Microwave cleaner

Put water and vinegar in a bowl, and microwave for 10 minutes

until the water evaporates. The steam will soften any food rem-

nants that may have splattered on the inside of the microwave, and

you can wipe it all away with one easy stroke.

Local Profile – Aaron Rushton I am back in my hometown with my wife and kids. We have lived away working in Cairns and Adelaide for 12 years. I grew up here and completed my plumbing apprenticeship in Ballarat. After gaining 20 years-experience in gas, plumbing and excavating – I have just launched my ‘Ballarat Vac Trucks’ business in Haddon. My former job was co-owning a gas-mains replacement business contracting to Origin and APA, where using the vacuum truck was the best and safest method to dig holes using hydro-excavation, and I saw an opportunity to utilise that method here. Vacuum trucks use pressurised water to expose underground assets such as power, water, gas, pipes and tree-roots – without the risk of damage. The ‘potholing’ or ‘trenching’ methods, as it is known, is safe, efficient and can save a headache of a costly un-derground breakage mistake. They are also great for high-pressure water cleaning. I am enjoying running into both of our extended family members, old work colleagues, footy friends, and mates around town after being away for so long. I got to watch a few Geelong Cats games, and we are into the local sporting clubs like Little Aths and Auskick. We also love camping. Cheers, ‘Rusho’.

HISTORY OF CRYSTAL GLENMAR A true story by Glen Drake During our years at No 2 Breakwater Road in our fruit shop, I took many stupid steps

and at no stage could I have foreseen where the future would lead us. Nor could I have

guessed where the trips to Melbourne Market would lead us down completely unexpected paths in life.

I used to pick up a Trotting Weekly from the news agency in Footscray each Friday – I had become interested in

trotting and pacing horses after being influenced by Dad following our visits to Corio Oval in Geelong, along with Car-

nival days at Portarlington and other district sports days during the Christmas holiday periods.

Dad had followed the sport during old-time shows and recalled often the domination of a stallion called Globe Derby.

In the paper one week, this stallion was listed as the sire or a mare that was advertised for sale with an eight month

old colt at foot.

The following actions might not have been wise but, as it has often been said, history has not always been wise.

Yes, I did make a phone call and this old mare, registered as Kaminoo, and in foal again, was on her way with the colt

to Coulter Street in Newcomb. All that subsequently took place cannot be written here but, briefly, we offered the

foal to the members of Newcomb Sports Club under a syndication arrangement, with our family keeping some spare

shares. Several Club members took up the opportunity.

Our senior coach, Mr Glen, now suggested we name the foal Crystal Clear but this was not accepted by the Harness

Racing Board. The Board was, however, happy to accept our second suggestion of Crystal Glenmar. Next came the question of racing

colours and we adopted the colours of the local primary school.

During this period we decided to leave the fruit shop and take on a new venture – running a motel in Ballarat – and, understandably,

our horses headed north with us.

In between buying Kaminoo and Crystal Glenmar, silly old me took a trip to Melbourne to visit the yearling sales at Flemington and I

put my hand up when I should have sat on it! Consequently we became the owners of a lovely leggy filly, latter to be named Kelly

Glenmar.

One day I asked a local trainer, Mr George Turner, to inspect Kelly with a view to deciding if we should train her to race. George was

keen to do so but he also asked if he could train the young colt that was running around the Fussell Street paddock. What could I say

but “Thank you, George, I accept your requests with pleasure.” Then we were off, chasing those nags around the clubs.

Kelly went on and had a few races but the colt showed considerable potential so we concentrated on him at that stage.

We were complete novices when it came to participating in this sport. Fortunately, George helped us along, as did everyone we could

quiz about the best way to manage this lovely, dark brown colt.

Crystal started in several trials and the general opinion of experienced “advisors” was that he showed talent. Not long after that, we

entered him for his first start at St Arnaud. So we were off, and not really confident about our venture. Yes it was a stupid way to get

involved like that but, as I said earlier, it just happened that way.

Poor old Dad was no longer around to enjoy this venture but luckily Mum was a great backstop and, as our life still revolved around

Geelong and district, Mum’s bakes and sandwiches led the way and we had a party after every race. As a

result, we became prominent organisers for the afternoon and evening parties in the stables beside/behind

our houses. Mum also became well known around the tracks for her afternoon teas. We always enjoyed

these in the stalls beside our horses, along with the company of trainers and race rans.

Four brilliant up-and-coming two-year-olds were entered in Crystal’s first race but, to our surprise, our

“CRYSTAL” had no problem leading the race from start to finish, winning by several metres and indicating

that he would qualify for a start in Melbourne very early in his career.

The Victorian Harness Racing Board advised us to enter Crystal in the heats of the country’s most prestigious

event for two-year-olds, with the finals to be run at Moonee Valley.

The first race in the series was the Sapling Stakes. Crystal qualified

so all the syndicate members headed off to Moonee Valley.

Gammalite, the State’s top horse at that time, was entered in the

same race and was heading for his tenth straight win. I can assure

you that we were surprised and delighted when Crystal outsprinted

the field down the straight to the winning post, with Gammalite

coming in second.

A second placing at Kilmore qualified Crystal for the final of the

Youthful Stakes to be run – again at Moonee Valley - four weeks

later. Sadly, the final race did not hold out much hope of another

celebration for our group as the weather bureau predicted a severe

storm with rain, hail and wind to arrive just when the final was due

to be run. Our strategy was for Crystal to try to lead the field for the full 2000 meters. Our driver Mr Keith Douglas assured us that he

would lead and that the others would need more luck than we would.

A second placing at Kilmore qualified Crystal for the final of the Youthful Stakes to be run – again at Moonee Valley - four weeks later.

Sadly, the final race did not hold out much hope of another celebration for our group as the weather bureau predicted a severe storm

with rain, hail and wind to arrive just when the final was due to be run.

Our strategy was for Crystal to try to lead the field for the full 2000 meters. Our driver Mr Keith Douglas assured us that he would lead

and that the others would need more luck than we would.

As predicted, the storm was on its way just as the horses were lining up for the start. The starting gate flew back and they were off!

Keith took Crystal to the front as planned, even though the track was in a terrible condition and the weather promised only to get

worse. Down the back straight, Gammalite’s driver had the whip drawn while Crystal appeared to be travelling smoothly. Our driver

gave Crystal every chance and they did not have to pass another horse at any stage of the race. They won easily!

What a great night that was for all the syndicate members, and what a celebration we had in the grandstand as guests of the Victorian

Harness Racing Board’s Committee.

Much to our surprise, we were enjoying a very interesting year. But more was to follow, with another invitation, a trip to Perth this

time to represent Victoria in a new series of heats, with all winners meeting at Gloucester Park for the Gold Nugget series final.

We thought we had enjoyed a very successful year in our home State but this invitation was something much more interesting and

challenging. Free air fares and accommodation for our horse, trainer and driver, as well as us as owners.

Our trip to the West did not go without a hitch – poor Crystal became dehydrated during the flight and finished mid-field in his heat as

a result. He was then off the track for another week while a vet who was helping our team treated him.

Luckily, fortune was still on our side and we were able to get Phil Coulson, Australia’s top driver, to take the driver’s seat. Although he

had been unable to have any trials with Crystal under race conditions, Phil missed took the drive in a very important heat –

qualification for the finals was at stake.

Our trainer was eager for Phil to use the whip in the final but assured us he could get the best out of Crystal without it. The trainer

realised it would show a lack of support to insist that Phil change his driving style.

During the race, Phil sat very patiently but confidently in last place for most of the time. With half a lap to go, all the other horses and

drivers in the field were working hard up front, disputing who going to lead into the final straight for a sprint to the finishing line.

There was still no sign of panic from Phil as they all spread out over the straight with whips out busily, trying to get the last desperate

lunge from their horses.

There was no sign of panic from Phil – he encouraged Crystal to make an enormous sprint to the finish, getting home by just inches

and qualifying for the final. The other drivers and trainers (as well as us inexperienced voices from Newcomb Sports Club) considered

it was the best drive they had ever seen.

In the final, Crystal’s host Mr Greg Harper took the reins. There was a great battle between Crystal and the favourite Justin Hanover.

Unfortunately, the third placegetter lodged a protest so we did not win the beautiful trophy. However we did celebrate our boy’s

great race, realising how lucky we were to have come this far.

Crystal was very successful pacer for many years and ended up this 32 wins. His full sister Lindy Glenmar also won 11 races. Other

successful members of Kamino’s family included Jodie Glenmar, who won in Melbourne as well as being very successful on country

race tracks, and Ricky Glenmar who also had many successes on Victorian tracks.

More than 70 business leaders and young entrepreneurs en-joyed lunch and networking at Clyde Park Vineyard & Bistro at our August Business Networking event.

Guests heard from Peter Dostis and Linda Wong from Runway on their journey to help start-ups and entrepreneurs in both Gee-long and Ballarat. We also heard from local success story Josh Walker from World Class Vintage, who continues to go from

strength to strength in his online business. These events are a great opportunity to connect with other local businesses and I encourage you to sign up to receive economic development up-dates to your email by visiting goldenplains.vic.gov.au/newsletter/signup.

Local residents, community groups and organisations have put forward 13 community projects as part of the State Government's ‘Pick My Project’ initiative. It’s time for the community, including local businesses, to get behind their favourite projects and vote. Without the votes, projects from Golden Plains Shire might not be funded – see the story below for more information.

STOP KITTY LITTERING

Council will be offering residents, with support of local vets, a 50% discount on desexing with each new cat registration from Monday 1 September 2018 for a limited time. This initiative aims to address increased numbers of cats being impounded and eu-thanised in Golden Plains Shire.

To be eligible for the offer, the cat must be currently unregis-tered and the vet practices will need to process registration ap-plications on site at their facilities.

Contact one of two Vet clinics to organise an appointment (and mention this offer). Residents in the south of the Shire should contact the Golden Plains Veterinary Practice on 5281 2226, and residents in the north of the Shire should con-tact the Smythesdale Veterinary Practice on 5318 5750.
