As we turn our calendar to November, representatives from various colleges and technical institutues are busy visiting our school and providing students with all the information they need to start making fu-ture decisions.

Now is the time for seniors to begin nar-rowing down their choice of prospective schools. One important step is to sched-ule a campus visit. Mr. Brown can help with this process.

It’s also not too early for seniors to begin applying and being accepted to the schools they are interested in. Remem-ber, the earlier you are accepted, the more opportunities you have to receive early bird scholarships.

Speaking of scholarships, seniors are en-couraged to check out the SCHOLAR-SHIPS link on the school’s website. Scholarships are added weekly so be sure to check this link often so you don’t miss application deadlines.

As we talk about paying for college and financial aid, this month is also a good time to begin the application process for federal financial aid. We will be holding a College Financial Aid Night here at the school December 5th at 6:30 PM in the library.

ACT REGISTRATION DEADLINE: If you are planning to take the ACT test in De-cember, the registration date is Novem-ber 8th with the test being given on De-cember 14th. Visit ACT.org to register. Mr. Heitz is once again at our school on Thursdays for personal counseling and classroom visits. Students are logging into their SDMyLife account to take interest inventories, ca-reer aptitude surveys, and build their Per-

sonal Learning Plan (PLP) that will help them outline all the courses they have al-ready completed and those they will take in the future.

The anatomy class toured PC and the 10th & 11th graders have toured the Marshall County Health facility in Britton to gather information about all the health occupa-tions that are available in the job market.

With so many activities going on during this time of year, it is easy to forget the beautiful season and the portraits painted by nature each day.

Be sure to take a little time to enjoy the changing seasons and to be thankful for all the blessings of life. As we continue to work towards the success of our students, be sure to take some time to relax and re-flect on the goodness of the Thanksgiving season. We are truly blessed.

On behalf of the Langford Music Boosters, we wish to extend appreciation to all who helped make this year’s carnival a suc-cess. Without the help of dedicated par-ents and students, the carnival would not be possible. It is great to have the support of all these communities. We offer sincere thanks to all who attend-ed the carnival to share in the fun and games. Your support of this event benefits our music department and every Langford student.

First, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the stu-dents and parents who worked so hard to make this year’s mu-sic boosters carnival a great success! It truly is a wonderful event for our community, school, and students in our mu-sic department. It is also the sole source of fund raising for our music boosters and music students. Money from this fund raiser helps to pay for needed equipment, uniforms and meals for the music students. Howev-er, a portion of all proceeds goes back to the class treasur-ies to help pay for expenses like float building, prom, and graduation. This year, the mu-sic boosters will give back al-most $1300 to the class treas-uries! This year’s presidents, Mandy

Boe and Mindy Glines, along with the game committee, the bingo committees, and Erin Liknes and her kitchen commit-tee, deserve an ovation for all their time, hard work, and pa-tience in putting together anoth-er successful event! The senior class broke the class ticket rec-ord this year by selling 6,878 tickets for the duke and duch-ess race. The previous record was held by the class of 2013. They also will go on record with a handful of other classes who have won the Duke and Duch-ess race all four years of high school! Congrats to the seniors and to everyone for their efforts in making the carnival a nearly 70 year tradition! The 7-12 concert band and K-12 vocal students will be per-forming at the Veterans Day

program on November 11th. November gives us all a little time to breathe. It’s not such a busy month with performances or activities, but a time for dig-ging into our Winter Concert music. Students at every grade level are learning music that will warm our hearts and put us all in the mood for Christmas. Looking ahead: The Winter Concert is sched-uled for December 10th at 7:00 P.M. in the school gym. The high school choir will per-form in Pierre at Christmas at the Capital on December 14th at 3:00 P.M. Look for more de-tails in next month’s newsletter and from Mrs. Wieser. Basketball pep band begins in December! The pep band will play for all home basketball events.

Music Notes by Mrs. Wieser

November means oral interp season is in full swing. Eighteen students performed at the local con-test held on October 30th. Judge Virginia Anderson provided feedback to students and chose those individuals who will advance to the District Contest to be held in Aberdeen at the Dakota Event Center on November 13th. The following students will represent Langford at the District Contest: Emily Palmer - “Collarbone” in the serious reading division; Chesney Olson - “Tips for Women: How to Have a Relationship with a Guy” will advance in the humorous category; Laney Widener - “Pretty” in Poetry, and in oratory is Olivia Ewalt with “Failure in Success.” There were six local entries in the duet competition. Selected to advance were Emily Palmer and Kade Larson with their performance of “The History of Mankind...in Less Than 10 Minutes.” The Reader’s Theatre group of Colin Frey, Zander Widener, Kade Larson, Chesney Olson, and Emily Palmer will perform “Group Therapy” for the judges in Aberdeen. The students are coached by Mrs. Krueger. Congratulations and good luck at the District contest!

Our featured teacher this month is our new technology coordina-tor/computer teacher Ann Marie Hill. Ms. Hill was born and raised in Bristol by parents who were farmers. She graduated from Bristol HS in three years by tak-ing courses out of Vermillion during her junior year. She originally went to SDSU to major in child psychology but found her passion for teaching instead.

She graduated from NSU with her BS in Education in 2002 and earned a Master’s degree in Education in 2015. Ann Marie is beginning her 18th year of teaching which began with elementary jobs at the Pierre Indian Learning Center and Enemy Swim Day school. She taught 6-11 math, 7-9 Eng-lish, 7-8 science & reading, and supervised the APEX program for 11 years at Waubay.

Her last stop before coming to Langford was teaching middle school science, computers, pre-algebra, and psychology & so-ciology for the Webster School District.

Ms. Hill defines a teacher as just a regular person that loves inspiring and nurturing other

people in finding their passion for and understanding of the world around them.

She was influenced to become a teacher by Carol Dagel, a humanities instructor who helped her see the struggles children go through. “Her experiences and inspiring attitude led me to realize that I wanted to help children succeed and teaching was the most di-rect path in doing that.”

After many years of teaching, most of her “best” or “favorite” memories are a blur…”seeing a student’s face when they scored higher than they thought possi-

ble after working hard”…”having a student proudly explain a difficult ques-tion and solution to another stu-dent with confidence”…”but graduations are generally my favorite because the student and I can look at each other and know they made it!”

“Teaching memories in a small school are even more special because you really get to be-come a part of your students’ lives.”

What is the most important thing Ms. Hill wants to teach her students? “You are the #1 determining factor in your own success. You have to show up, care, try, and persevere because every-one else is just a spectator.”

When asked what she likes to do in her free time, Ann Marie replied, “I used to have hob-bies, but now I have children!

I have two beautiful, smart, amazing girls that joined my life through my journey as a foster parent. We like to go camping, ride horse, show horses and spoil our other pets!”

Welcome to Langford Area School. We wish you all the best during your first year.

The colleges and technical schools in South Dakota would like to announce SOUTH DAKOTA COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK! During the week of

November 4th through the 8th, seniors can make application to most colleges in South Dakota and the application fee will be WAIVED. Even if you are not 100% sure on what college you would like to attend, now would be a good time to apply for admission since the application fee is waived. When you decide on a school, you can then contact the colleges where you made application and inform them of your choice. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Brown.

Oh the Weather Outside is Frightful!

COMING SOON: WINTER WEATHER!

As the temps outside began to fall, the winter season and its weather is approaching.

As South Dakotans, we know just how quickly our weather can change. To ensure that we’re ready when that occurs, here is a reminder of our weather-related announcement information for your review.

If school will be closed for the entire day, started late or dismissed early, we will launch a ONE CALL NOW message that will call the phone numbers supplied to us at the beginning of the year.

Announcements will also be updated and run on the school’s website: www.langford.k12.sd.us Facebook page. School announcements should also be broad-cast on KELO (CBS) and KSFY (ABC) televi-sion stations. You can also access the KELO television sta-tion’s website www.keloland.com and click on

the Closeline link at the left for closing infor-mation.

BREAKFAST PROGRAM: If school is started late, there will be NO BREAKFAST served at school that day.

ATTENTION PRESCHOOL PARENTS:

In the event that school will start late on a Tues-day or Thursday, there will be NO KINDER-CUBS PRESCHOOL held on that day.

When school is dismissed early, there is never enough time to contact all parents. Therefore, it is very important that you discuss with your chil-dren, especially those in the lower elementary grades, what to do if school is let out and you are not there when they arrive home from school early.

Winter weather is nasty to deal with, but in-creased communication between parents and the school can insure safety for all our children. Thanks for your help and cooperation during this upcoming winter season.

From the Desk of . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Mr. Nipp, Supt. It’s hard to believe that November is here and the 1st quarter of this school year is history. I would like to congratulate our fall athletes and marching band members for their hard work and dedication and for representing our school and community with enthusiasm and good sports-manship. We are very proud of your accom-plishments.

THANK YOU

Mr. Brown and I would like to thank all of you for attending Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences.

If you didn’t get a chance to attend and would like to visit with your child’s teacher, please give us a call and we can set up an appointment that is convenient for you.

November also reminds us to stop and give thanks for all we’ve been given. We are very thankful for all the support our school receives from its parents and community members. You are important partners in educating our children. We are very thankful for you and invite you to visit your school often.

VETERANS DAY PROGRAM

We will be holding a Veterans Day program here at the school on Monday, November 11th. We would like to invite all parents and community members to join us as we pay tribute to all those men and women who have served for our coun-try. If you have anything you would like to add to the program, please contact me.

AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK will be ob-served in our school during the week of Novem-ber 18 - 22 This is a great time to remember that caring teachers and involved parents make the biggest difference in a child’s learning. America’s public school teachers equip our youth with many skills. They not only teach stu-dents reading and math, but help them learn to solve problems, resolve conflicts and practice cooperating with one another. Our teachers want their students to develop these skills and achieve success. During American Education Week, we invite you to visit your school and see how together, we are fulfilling our responsibility in providing the best education for every child.

The South Dakota Lions Vision Van will be visiting Langford Area School on November 19th at 9:00 AM. The screening is a free service that is being offered to children ages 12 months to 12 years old. Children not yet in school are invited to participate.

The vision screening machine takes a picture of the child’s eyes and within seconds provides the screening results. The screening can detect up to seven potential eye conditions. No physical con-tact is made with the child and no eye drops are required. The results will be printed and given to the child’s parents. Since this is just a screening, consent forms are not necessary, however if you DO NOT want your child to participate in this vision screening, please contact Sheila at 493-6454.

Back by popular demand, PAWS is hosting a That’s My Pan fundraiser. The proceeds will go towards their “Playground Facelift” project. An infor-mational flyer will soon be sent home with all elementary students with or-dering instructions. Orders will be due by Thanksgiving break with delivery planned for mid-December just in time for Christmas.

The Region 1B Volleyball Tourney will begin on November 4th; however, the Lions are the #3 seed and have a bye that night.

Therefore, Langford will be hosting a 2nd round match on Tuesday, November 5th, most likely with Aberdeen Christian. There will only be one match here that night as Seeds #1, #2, and #4 will be hosting their own matches.

On Thursday, November 7th, the top two high-est seeds will host with the winners of those matches advancing to the SoDak 16. So get ready to pack the Langford gym next Tuesday as our Lions volleyball team plays
