Farewell … Dear Lions ,as you know this is my final edition of the Newsletter as Editor. I take the opportunity to thank all contributors over my long tenure;without whom publication would not be possible. Would you kindly forward all future stories and pictures, etc., to my committee colleague, Ron Smith at [email protected] . Phone 9598 4162, or post to 26 Duff Street, Sandringham,Vic. 3191. Thanks again, Norm Robinson Dear Fellow Lions Family Members: THE year that was – Usha and I have thoroughly enjoyed our year. Looking back now, I wonder how I accomplished so many Lions tasks and became a grandparent as well! As District Governor I had unparalleled fabulous guidance and assistance from all Cabinet Officers and Lions in the District 201V5. Usha and I thank all of you for making the job a pleasure when it could have been more onerous. The year started with a bang with drummers and dancing girls welcoming the District Governor’s Team and wishing us all the luck and success for the year. Also prior to this we had attended the installation of Barry Palmer as the International President at the International Convention held in Hamburg, Germany. What a feeling! To witness and welcome our own Aussie International President for the first time in the 96 years history of Lions Clubs International it was a privilege and honour to work for Barry and “FOLLOW YOUR DREAM” and “PROMOTING HAPPINESS” within the Family, Community, Clubs and the District. Our AGM and Convention at Marysville which was hosted by the Marysville & District Lions Club Inc., was magnificent. The key note speakers from India – International Director Sangeetajatia and Past International Director AP Singh were inspirational and very sensational. We had Geoff Secker, keeping us in line and entertaining us as the Sergeant- at-Arms. The feedback from Conventioneers was: fabulous food, entertainment and all went very well – one of the best. But then we would have expected nothing else from our country cousins in Marysville. By 2nd of April 2014, Usha and I finished all of our Club visits. Our hearts are overflowing with the kindness, friendship, and fun shown to us by all the Clubs in the District – we all enjoyed singing the District song and listening to one another and promoting harmony and happiness. Everyone has a story or something important to add to our knowledge base. We have so much experience between us all and yet can still work together to combat adversity. Usha and I were pleasantly surprised at the amount and the variety of projects that are being undertaken by the Lions, Lioness and Leo Clubs in our District. The many Projects being done are too many to mention, but I am sure that you are all making a difference to the members of your Communities in some way whether it be financial help, by doing hands-on projects to assist the needy members of your Local, National and International Communities. Charter celebration … WE did Charter a new Club on 24th March, 2014 the Lions Club of Dandenong City. I thank Ruwan and Lidia Paul for encouraging many new members to join. I am also grateful to Past Council Chairman Lou Onley and others assisting in the formation of the new Club. From The

EACH year, about this time, we, as Lions, are very busy people. We have had ourelections for the Lion’s year to come andare eagerly looking forward to the yearahead. The Incoming Officers Seminar is

scheduled, and Club Officials will soon bebriefed on their tasks which will start on1st July.At Cabinet level, the District Governor

is preparing to finalise the year of officeand is probably wondering just where thepast twelve months have gone. The Incoming District Governor has

plans for the next twelve months aheadwhich are well and truly forming. Thefeeling is that there is so much to do andso little time in which to do it!There is no doubt that the District

Governor has a big job as he or she looksinto the future because just as importantas the job which has to be done, is the wayin which a personality will be projected tothe many Club members who will meetthe DG in the course of the term of office.During my time as a Lion I have come

to know many District Governors whohave seen the position from manydifferent angles. I daresay you have metthem too. How would you rate ouroutgoing District Governor? Well,Chandra, in my book you are at the top ofthe class. You have shown that you are aDG for the average Club member. Yoursense of humor is something which we allappreciate and your ability to mix withthe Club members and still get the jobdone will, I hope, be remembered into thefuture.I hope you have enjoyed your year as

District Governor, and as it comes to aclose I am sure that all Lions Clubmembers will wish you and Usha all thevery best of fortune in the future.

Salvation Centre CambodiaAs I spoke about at the Marysville Convention, myexperiences working in Cambodia with the non-profitorganization Salvation Centre Cambodia (SCC) werevery humbling. SCC continues their good work today, serving the needs of a community still struggling toovercome the legacy of war – conducting HIV/AIDSprevention, care and support programs; supplyingfood, clothing and school materials to orphaned andvulnerable children; and facilitating micro-financeand income generation initiatives. Any support fortheir projects would be warmly welcomed. For further

details, or to make a contribution during your end of year distributions, please contactme on 0425-656-778; Email: pettitandrew@ hotmail.com . I am also happy to offermyself as a speaker at your club to talk further about my experiences and SCC’sprojects. DG Chandra supports this worthy project.

AT the MD201 Convention held atTamworth in May, we were most fortunateto have the EMIB project accepted as oneof the 10 Category “B” projects with anextension until 30th June, 2017.At the Convention, EMIB had an

information booth manned was kept quitebusy by members from Clubs from all overAustralia stopping to ask about the Project. It still amazes me that so many people havenot heard about the project even though aquarterly newsletter is sent to all Clubs viatheir Cabinet Secretary keeping the Clubsup to date with news and informationabout the EMIB. In my presentation of theNotice of Motion, I informed all presentthat we have now distributed over 178,125books to 377 Clubs throughout the MD201including Clubs from each of the 19Districts.Please help to keep interest in this project

going, by ensuring that your Club knowsabout the project and is aware of theadvantages it is continuing to show in theprompt medical attention people receivewhen attended to by an AmbulanceParamedic. Ask your members to becomeinvolved by approaching Chemists,Doctor’s Rooms, etc., and see if they candisplay a counter box with books for thecommunity to see and purchase for a goldcoin donation.

CHANGEOVER DINNER CLAYTON R.S.L. 163 CARNISH ROAD, CLAYTON

SATURDAY 19TH JULY 2014

(Please Circle one)

OUR weekend away had been in theplanning for many months, and as thetime drew near, we were expecting theworst. Dookie had had its wettest few daysin years (85mm in Dookie for the threedays prior to the weekend), and a reportfrom a very damp Warburton on the nightbefore we left did not sound promising. The weather was in fact a very important

factor for this particular weekend, as manyof us were intending to ride our bikes fromLilydale to Warburton on the Saturday, andthen weather permitting to ride fromWarburton back to Lilydale on the Sunday. In all, thirty-two Dookie Lions and

friends set off on Saturday morning, 12thApril to drive to the Lilydale RailwayStation which is the starting point of theRail Trail to Warburton. Arriving inLilydale just after 11 am, we stepped out ofour cars, unloaded the bikes and set off innear perfect conditions. It was partly sunny, not too hot, not too cold and best of all itwas not windy. This particular Rail Trail is exactly 40km

in length, and passes through some verybeautiful scenery. The recent rains hadreally freshened up the bush and many littlestreams were babbling along as they passedunder the trail. Our first stop, at the 14km mark was for

lunch at the quaint ‘Carriage Café’. Somevery enterprising people have built the cafe, using an old-style railway carriage. It isright on the Rail Trail, and within the townof Seville.Back on the bikes and on into the

afternoon as we soaked up the spectacularscenery, which included the upper reachesof the Yarra River and some great mountainviews. The surface ishard packed gravel, and despite all therain, was inremarkably goodcondition. At Warburton we

were all booked intothe ‘Alpine RetreatHotel’, a big oldrambling pub withabout 40 bedrooms,on the bank of the Yarra, which at this pointis a lovely mountain stream. Happy Hourwas enjoyed in the lounge as stories of theday unfolded. Many had not ridden 40kmbefore, so there was a lot to brag about. Wehad a dining room to ourselves for dinnerand then some good fun was had as eachperson told the group about their day. Wewere all pretty tired after quite a long day, somost turned in for an early night.

On Sunday morning we all gathered backin the dining room for breakfast, and righton 9.30, those of us that were riding back toLilydale set off. Only thirteen of the groupwere up to the return trip, the rest going offto enjoy the local scenery and a busySunday Market at Yarra Junction. The ride back was enjoyed once again in

sunshine and virtually no wind. Most of us

pulled into the ‘Carriage Café’ for a coffeeon the return trip, and then it was off forthe remaining few kilometres into Lilydale. As Lions, we work pretty hard within our

community, so a weekend away like this is agreat way to relax and socialise. This tripwas extra special too as we had quite a lot ofnon-Lions with us and we all enjoyed eachothers’ company.
