LIONS DEN As I am writing this, a prediction of snow is heard on the radio; well we had a beautiful summer and fall so "bring it on"! The Club had our semi-aimual road clean up (from the ferry to West Shore Rd.) scheduled but got rained out; we got it done the next day. Every year it's a surprise the things we pickup and this year it was: a large shipping bag for a king sized mattress (what a prize).

There was a good turnout for our monthly Sunday Brunch, we had a few people make the trip from the Soo to enjoy a good breakfast. The raffle wirmers ($50 each) for October are; Julie Shaver, Melissa Morehouse and Doug Reusser. The 50/50 winner asked not to be identified but she did donate her winnings to the Club, thanks much.

We have only one member with a birthday in November, Jim Langendorf have a good one on your day, Jim.

SICK CHESS As many of you know, playing chess has many benefits, including enhancing memory, IQ, attentiveness, concentration, problem-solving, and forward-thinking capabilities. Some school districts have chess-in-schools programs, recognizing that chess has great potential to help kids develop their mental skills. Chess has been used by teachers in some third world countries where school had consisted mainly of rote memorization in order to train school children how to think critically.

With the holidays coming up, it's not a bad time to introduce someone near and dear to you to the game of chess. This can be done by taking them to a place where chess is played, including to the Sugar Island Chess Klub on Thursdays, or by getting them equipment to play the game. There are many books on how to play chess and chess websites that teach how to play and have equipment for sale. Various links to these sources can be found on the new Lake Superior Chess Association (LSCA) website, www.michess.org/up. This website was set up with help from two of our SICK Chess members and is a subsite of the Michigan Chess Association's website. We encourage you to go to the LSCA website and explore. And i f you want any advice for what chess-related gifts to buy for Christmas, just stop by and ask on a Thursday night at the Hilltop.

FIRE PLUGS Remember that when we change our clocks back on November 2nd we should also check our smoke detectors. We recently attended a training session on smoke detectors and one of the main items stressed was that after 10 years the unit needs to be replaced even i f it still test OK. The test button normally only tells you i f your battery in good not i f the unit is working correctly.

Another item that was covered was the length of time you have to get out of your house i f the smoke detector goes off. We used to say you had ten minutes before the area would become deadly. The program, put on by Underwriters Labs, shows that with the new building materials and finishes that a person would only have 3 minutes to get out of their home. So it is important to have an escape plan in place for all members of the household. After everyone is safe you can call 911 and check to see i f you are able to put out the fire.

Anyone driving by last months fire meeting saw us practicing our extrication skills. An island resident had donated his old truck for us to practice on, at least I hope it was his old truck. We removed the doors and roof using our equipment. This is often needed at an accident scene to safely remove a patient and also comes in handy i f you forget your car keys. Next month we plan to bum the truck and practice on car fires.

Remember chimney cleaning equipment is available and we would like to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving.

Sugar Island Township News Ifs election time again, and your participation is greatly appreciated. We have a RENEWAL on the ballot for our Solid Waste Disposal. If you appreciate being able to bring your garbage to our Primary Waste Station on 1 Vi Mile Road or the Summer Waste Station on South Homestead Road, please vote for a positive outcome.

Our Community Center is a gathering place for Island Residents with many activities happening during the next two months. You are always welcome, and the company is very friendly. Please refer to those events listed in The Quacker calendar and those on the calendar at the Community Center.

Our roads are back in working order due to the hard work of the Chippewa County Road Commission, if you see one of their employees, give them a wave or a word of thanks, I know they would appreciate it.

Sufiarlsland Cnes$ KiuD FIND T H E MOVES—What is BLACK's best move? (Theme: PinAVeak Back Rank)

KING (K)—moves one square in any direction © / H J QUEEN (Q)-moves any number of squares in any direction (on rows/ranks, columns/files, or diagonals} S / I R O O K (R)—moves any number of squares sideways, forward, or backwanj (on ranks and files, not diagonals) M./SL B I S H O P (B)—moves any number of squares on diagonals

KNIGHT (N)—moves in an "L* shape (2 squares one way and 1 the other) to a square of the opposite color. Knights are the only pieces that can jump over others. & / i PAWN—moves straight forward (cannot back

up) 1 or 2 squares on the first move and then only 1 at a time. A pawn can capture only on the diagonal squares immediately in front of it. Pawns reaching the 8* rank become a Q (or R, B or N). Pieces CAPTURE ("X") by running into and displacing others-A king is in CHECK ("+") when it is attacked. CHECKMATE occurs when a player cannot save the king from capture. WHITE STARTED AT THE B O T T O M AND BLACK AT THE T O P

ANSWER: The white Q is "pinned" to the white K by the black Q, i.e.. the white Q cannot move off the diagonal running from b1 to h7 (the white K would be in check). Black can take advantage of this by moving the black R to the d8 square. The white Q cannot take it. If white takes the black Q. then black uses the R on d8 to take the white rook on d1 for mate. Other moves lose the Q to the R (or result in mate). [1 ...Rd8 2.Qxf5. Rxdl mate.]

On Thursday, October 17, the Sugar Island Lions Club picked up trash along 1 Mile Road, from the ferry dock to Westshore Dr . There were 9 participants, which made for easy work. This event was originally scheduled on Wednesday but was postponed due to rain. Thursday turned out to be a pleasant, dry, afternoon and it was noted by many that there seems to be less trash with each semi-armual pickup.

Lions cleanup crew, left to right are. Art Leighton, Tom Brunet, Frank (Jim) Handziak, Leo Rich, Bob Beaumont, Marv Dick, Bud Willis, and Jim Langendorf. Not in the picture but taking the photo is Brian Smith.
