THINGS TO PONDER – THINGS TO DO DG BILL UHRIG

A new program has been added by Lions Club International. With 2017 rapidly approaching a challenge has been issued to the Lions of the world. In this en-deavor we are being challenged to perform, and report, 100 million acts of service between now and the close of the Centennial Celebration December2017. The theme of the centennial is “Where There’s A Need, There’s a Lion”. There is four Global Service Action Campaigns. They are “Engaging Our Youth”, “Sharing the Vision”, “Relieving the Hunger” and “Protecting Our Environment”. While not a new program there remains the Veterans Program. In this anyone who has honorably served in one of the military services is eligible for membership without paying the charter or entrance fee. Lions All: I had the pleasure of volunteering at a vision screening in Brownsburg, Indiana this month and it once again reminded me of our motto “We Serve”. Lions are doing great work when we come together to dedi-cate our time and talent to serving the children of the State of Indiana. Most of these young people we will never meet again but some we will have touched in a profound way that could change their lives. Helping just one child see properly can change a life and better a community! This past month I was in the great city of Shelbyville, Indiana filling in for District Governor Bill at a club visitation. The Shelbyville Lions Club were gracious hosts and a special shout out to Lion President Larry Glasco for buying a round of drinks and dinner for myself and chauffeur District Secretary Don Mullen. The Shelbyville Lions are celebrating their 85 anniversary as a club in September! I had a chance to join the Beech Grove Lions Club at their annual club picnic in early September and induct a new member into Lionism. The food and fellowship was great and I want to thank Lion President Larry Williams and Dis-trict Treasurer Don Stowers for being great hosts! I know I will have seen many of you at Camp Woodsmoke for Pork Chop Day and do not forget our Fall Cabinet Meeting at Hope, Indiana on October 25. VDG John Brown

Three Clubs have merged for the Governors Official Visit on October 1, 2014 at 6:30PM at the McCordsville United Methodist Church 6247 W. Broadway in McCordsville, In 46055 This on Hwy 67 The Clubs are Fortville, Lawrence and Indianapolis Center Township.

Well Lions, there is no way to get new members without really trying. If there was, we would not have the membership problem we have now. In the last three years, our District has lost more than 100 members in total membership. Many of those Lions passed away, but were not replaced with a new mem-ber, and club membership is shrinking. We are not alone in this problem. Last year, Indiana Lions lost more than 400 members!

To become a member of a Lions Club, a person must be invited to join. That is the way it has al-ways been in our organization. It is quite simple. We all have a circle of friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, etc., and we know they would be a great addition to our clubs. We just don’t ask them to join.

Perhaps we are afraid of the word “NO”. Perhaps we have already heard the many reasons or ex-cuses that someone could give. But perhaps we haven’t yet asked the one person who is waiting to be asked.

All 63 clubs in our district have projects which help their communities and make them better places in which to live. We just don’t take the time to share what we do. That is where the “trying” part needs to take place. We need to ask. We need to persist when someone says no. Maybe now is not the right time for them, but in six months, things may have changed. Ask again. Quite simply, we need to “Do Something”

As District Membership Chair, I would be more than happy to come to your club for a member-ship drive and speak on the benefits of Lionism. Several of our clubs have had successful membership drives. Make lists of people whom you would like to invite, pick a date, set up a meeting…Show people what we do, and maybe the next time you ask, they will say “YES”!

Please feel free to email me at [email protected], or contact me by phone at (317) 291-3949, and I will be more than happy to visit your club and make plans. We have to “Really Try” to get new members, and it starts with you!

District Global Membership Chair Sue Topf
