Edgar M. Elbert, elected President of Lions International at Mexico City in June, 1952, is a Key member of the Maywood, Ill., Lions club. His outstanding leadership in the May- wood club caught the attention of the district, and he was elected Governor of District I-A for 1939-40. So ably did he carry out his duties (41 new clubs established) that he was re-elected the following term.' Having proved his ability on the district level, he was elected an International Director in 1943. Lion' Elbert owns and operates E. M. Elbert Real Estate and Insurance Company and Citizens Cur- rency Exchange, Incorporated. He has found time to serve the Westlake Hospital Associa- tion as a director since 1933. He has served with distinction as president of the West Sub- urban Real Estate Board, also as resident for Harold P. Nutter, Camden, New Jersey, served as President of Lions International during the fiscal year 1951-52, having pre- viously served as Third, Second, and First Vice President, and twice as a Director. Dur- ing his incumbency, Lionism enjoyed the greatest year of growth in its history. Lion Nutter is a Master Key member in the Cam- den Lions club and has a record of 21 years' perfect attendance. He is a Past District Gov- ernor of District 16, and during the fiscal year 1942-43 served as Chairman of the Board of Governors. In 1952 he was the recipient of a Freedoms Foundation Award for the out- standing article he wrote for The LIONmag- azine--"Write Way to Freedom." Born in Milford, Delaware, Past President Nutter is a graduate of the University of Delaware and the Temple University Law School. He now heads the Nutter Mortgage Service in Cam- den, New Jersey. Prior to his election as Third Vice President, Lion Valenzuela had served as a member of the Board of International Rela- tions, International Director and District Gov- ernor of District H which included at that time the countries of Bolivia, Chile, and Peru. He was the charter President of the Santiago; Chile, Lions club and is the holder of a Master Key, the Extension Award Medal and the Merit Award. An official of the Chilean Gov- ernment, Vice President Valenzuela is mar- ried and he and his wife have four children and eight grandchildren. THE LION Monroe L. R. Roy Keaton, as Director-General, is theactive managing officer of Lions InternationaLLion Keaton became a member of the Lionsclub of Weatherford, Texas, in 1929. He hasbeen in the employ of Lions Internationalsince 1934, having served with distinction asa Special Representative and as State Secre-tary in Texas. Born in Weatherford, Texas,Lion Keaton is a graduate of Southern Meth-odist University where he received his Bach-elor and Master of Arts degrees. Recognizedas one of the country's outstanding speakers,his services in that capacity are in constantdemand. Lion Keaton lives in Elossrnoor.vIl-linois, with his wife, Elizabeth, and their twochildren, Larry and Sherry. He is a Mason,Knights Templar, and a Shriner.

Melvin Jones was born in Fort Thomas,Arizona, on January 13, 1880. At the age of20he went to Chicago to study law, later wentinto the insurance business and then oper-ated his own agency. In October, 1917, LionJones was one of two Chicago delegates to anorganizing convention of representatives ofvarious independent clubs throughout thecountry. At that meeting, attended by 46dele-gates and alternates, Lion Jones was electedSecretary-Treasurer. In July, 1950,the Inter-national Board of Directors bestowed uponhim the title of Secretary-General for life. Inthat capacity he serves as an advisor and con-sultant to the International Board. Lion Joneslives in Flossmoor, Illinois, with his wife,Rose. He is a Grand Master Key memberand a Mason.

William R_ Bu-d was appointed Secretaryof Lions International in January, 1947, andhas been employed by Lions Internationalsince March, 1937. Lion Bird was born inElwood, Indiana; attended high school atDecatur, Illinois, Washington University Eve-ning School in St. Louis, and received hisLL.B. degree from John Marshall Law School,Chicago, in February, 1947. He was admittedto the Bar in May, 1947, and is a member ofthe American Bar Association and Delta ThetaPhi. Lion Bird is a member of the EnglewoodLions club of Chicago and is a Presbyterianand a Mason. He is married and lives withhis wife, Ann, in the Normal Park district ofChicago.

Wilburn L. Wilson is Treasurer of the In-ternational Association of Lions Clubs, havingbeen appointed to that office by the Inter-national Board of Directors in September,1945. Lion Wilson is a Key member of theCentral Lions club of Chicago and has beenin the employ of Lions International since1932. During that time he has demonstratedoutstanding executive ability in the perform-ance of his duties as Auditor, Assistant Treas-urer, and as Treasurer. Born in Plain Deal-ing, Louisiana, Lion Wilson is a graduate ofChillicothe (Missouri) Business College, wherehis major course of study was accounting.He now lives in Glen Ellyn with his wife and

Born inLondon, W. Va., he attended school atCharleston and Greenbrier Military school.Now owner and manager of the Piece GoodsShops of Charleston, Huntington, Beckley,and Parkersburg, W. Va., Lion Simms is aBaptist, a Mason, a Shriner, a past exaltedruler of the Elks, a member of the TextileSalesmen's Association, Kanawha County cluband the Chamber of Commerce, and past pres-ident of a high school Parent-Teachers Asso-ciation. He and his wife, Opal, have fourchildren.

Miguel E. Abed, of Mexico, D. F., Mexico,was appointed an International Director in1952. He is a past president of the Mexico CityLions club, having been a member of thatclub since January, 1945. He is also a pastdistrict governor of District B-4 and is theimmediate past president of the National As-sociation of Lions Clubs of Mexico. He is oneof the few Lions in the entire InternationalAssociation who holds the International Mem-bership Key. He served as General Chairmanof the 35th Annual Lions International Con-vention in Mexico City in June, 1952. Hisbusiness interests are many,· but principallytextiles and real estate. A noted sportsman,he holds many trophies for yachting, fishing,racing, etc. He is married and is the fatherof eleven children.

Er-rrie C. Ellenson, Minneapolis, Minn.,was elected an International director (1951-53) at the International convention in June,1951. He was the first president and is aMaster Key member of the Richfield, Minn.,Lions club, which he helped organize in 1945.He was zone chairman, deputy governor andgovernor (1948-49) of District 5M-W. LionEllenson was born in Superior, Wis., gradu-ated from the college there with a degree inbusiness administration, and is presently con-nected with the St. Paul Book and StationeryCompany. He is a Lutheran, a Mason, and a

. member of the school board. He and his wifeMary have three children.

Q.m.Albert M. Eagler, West Los Angeles, Cali-

fornia, was District 4-D governor before hiselection as International director (1951-52)in June, 1951. Lion Eagler has had a perfectattendance record since 1922when he becamea Charter member of the Sawtelle, California,Lions club, held the secretary's job for 10years, and has served the district as zonechairman and deputy governor. He is secre-tary and treasurer of the Arnold InvestmentCompany, Incorporated, with which he hasbeen associated for 13 years. Born in New-man, Illinois, Lion Eagler is a Mason, a mem-ber of the First Christian church, the Chamberof Commerce, and his local draft board. Heis married and has one daughter.

James A. Richardson, Ada, Okla., servedas governor (1948-49) of Lions clubs of Dis-trict 3-K, prior to his election as an Inter-national Director (1951-53) in June, 1951. AKey member of the Ada club he has beenpresident, director, tail twister, and memberor chairman of every committee in the club.Lion Richardson is an automobile dealer,member of Contact club, Ada Chamber ofCommerce, Knife and Fork Club. He is aMethodist, a Mason, and an Elk. He and hiswife, Ethel, have two children, both married.

Cairo Caldera-Pallais, Managua, Nicaragua,was elected International Director in June,1952,at the International Convention in Mex-ico City. Lion Caldera is the past-Presidentof his club and is also a past-district gov-ernor. He is the holder of two InternationalExtension medals. Director Caldera is a grad-uate of the National Military Academy ofNicaragua and served for 6 years as an officerof the National Guard in his native land. Heis a merchant. Lion Caldera and his wife,Carmen, have four children.

Freder'ico Garcia Veve, Rio Piedras, PuertoRico, was elected International director (1951-53) at the International convention in June,1951. A Key member of the Rio Piedras club,he has served as director and president, andin the district as zone chairman, deputy gov-ernor and governor. Born in Fajardo, P. R., hereceived Bachelor of Arts and Law degreesfrom the University of P. R. Lion Garcia is amember of the Insular Bar Association, theFederal Bar Association, a Catholic, a memberof Phi Eta Mu fraternity, and has receivedseveral commendations and certificates ofmerit for his co-operation with selectiveservice in Rio Piedras as chairman of anadvisory board and re-employment commit-teeman. He and his wife, Aida, have twodaughters.

Joe J. Fisher, Jasper, Texas, a Key mem-ber in the Jasper Lions club, was elected In-ternational Director at Mexico City duringthe 1952 Annual Convention. Lion Fisher isa charter member of the San Augustine Lionsclub and has held all officesexcept Secretaryand Treasurer of the Jasper club. He alsoserved as.zone chairman, deputy district gov-ernor and district governor. He is a graduateof the University of Texas and is now anattorney. A member of the Methodist Church,Director Fisher is also a member of DeltaKappa Epsilon Fraternity, past president ofthe Jasper Chamber of Commerce, vice pres-ident of the Trinity-Neches Boy Scout Coun-cil and district attorney. William Lawson Waldie, Vancouver, B. C.,Canada, has served in all elective positionsof his club, Vancouver (Central) Lions club,including president, and was District 19-Agovernor in 1949-50. He was elected Inter-national Director (1951-53) in June, 1951, atthe International convention. Born in Peebles-shire, Scotland, he was educated in bankingand economics and is now manager of theYorkshire and Canadian Trust, Ltd. He ispast president of the Mortgage and TrustCompanies Association of British Columbia,past president of B. C. Golf Association, pastpresident of Scottish Societies, past noblegrand of the LO.O.F., and is a member of thePresbyterian church. Lion Waldie and hiswife, Harriet, have five sons.

Ross G. Wiuet·s, Miami, Fla., 1950-51Chairman of the Board of Governors, waselected International Director at the Interna-tional convention in June, 1951. He servedhis club as president, and District 35-S aszone chairman, deputy governor and governor.Lion Witters was born in Canton, Ohio, at-tended business college in Akron, Ohio, andis now owner, president, and manager of theWitters Construction Company in Miami. AMethodist, Mason, Shriner, he is past presi-dent of the South Florida Council of BoyScouts of America, and past president of theSouth Florida chapter of the Associa!'on ofGeneral Contractors of America. Manuel J. Gonzales, Manila Philippines,was elected International Director at the In-ternational convention in June, 1951. Born inManila, he studied business administrationin De La Salle College. A veteran of WorldWar II, he is now vice president and generalmanager of Advertising Associates, Incorpo-rated. He is also director of the PhilippineInformation Council, publicity director forPhilippine National Red Cross, publicity andinformation chairman for the CommunityChest, director and program chairman for theAdvertising Club of the Philippines, adviseron propaganda for Girl Scouts of the Philip-pines, director of the Philippine Radio Con-trol Board, member of the faculty of the Uni-versity of the East, National University, andDe La Salle College. He and his wife, Nelly,have four children.

Jesus Maria Hernandez, of Caracas, Vene-zuela, is a Director of Lions Internationalhaving been elected to that position at theInternational convention held in Mexico Cityin June, 1952. He is a charter member of theLions club of Caracas, having been one of theclub's founders in June, 1943. He is a pastpresident of the Caracas Lions club and hasalso held the offices of treasurer and director.He is a Key member and has been awardeda 5-year perfect attendance award. During1951-52he served as District Governor of theLions Clubs of District 3, Venezuela andNetherlands Antilles. He is a retail merchantand is largely responsible for the establish-ment of the Venezuelan Anti-Cancer Society.He is married and has four children.

John L. Stickley, Charlotte, N. C., waselected an International Director (1951-53) atthe International convention in June, 1951.AKey member and past president of the Char-lotte Lions club, Lion Stickley served also aszone chairman, deputy district governor anddistrict governor of 31-B. Born and educatedin Cambridge, Mass., Director Stickley at-tended Lowell Textile Institute. He now ownsand operates his own business specializingin textiles, tops, and yarns. He is also adirector of Package Products, Inc.; vice pres-ident of Realty Associates, Inc.; vice presi-dent of General Beverages, Southeast. A Bap-tist, Mason, and Shriner, Director Stickleyand his wife, Jennie, have three children.

E. L. (Slim) Harris, Birmingham, Ala-bama, was elected International Director inJune, 1952. He is a past president of the Bir-mingham' (West End) Lions club, and hasserved as district governor of 34-B, and asvice-chairman of the Board of Governors. Heis a Key member and is the holder of theExtension award. Lion "Slim," as he is gen-erally known, is the president of the Alabama'Sight Conservation Association, Trustee of theEye Foundation, Inc., and a member of theBirmingham Chamber of Commerce. Born inHancock County, Georgia, Lion Slim was ed-ucated in the public schools of Decatur Geor-gia, and at Georgia Tech. He is now a' publicaccountant and auditor. Director Harris is aMethodist and is active in civic affairs. He ismarried and he and his wife, Frances, haveone son.

Larry Neely, Medford, Oregon, is a MasterKey member of the Medford Lions club, hasserved it as president, and his district (36-E)as zone chairman twice, deputy governor andgovernor. He was elected International direc-tor (1951-53) at the International conventionin June, 1951. Director Neely was born inMapleton, Oregon, on December 17, 1903. Heis an Elk, a Mason, and a Shriner. Lion Neelyis married and has a daughter and a son.

Dr. Fernando Durand Lopez, Santiago deCuba, Cuba, director of Lions International(1951-53), was elected at the Internationalconvention in June, 1951. A Charter memberand Senior Master Key member of the San-tiago de Cuba Lions club, he served it asdirector, vice president, president, and sec-retary for seven years. He served in DistrictC-6 as zone chairman, cabinet secretary-treasurer, deputy governor and governor. Hehas worked for 34 years as a veterinarian inthe Office of Health, Veterinary Medical In-spector of the Customs House and professorof the farm school. Lion Durand is a Mason,a Catholic, is married, and has three children.

Postelle Cooper, Deming, New Mexico, aSenior Master Key member, was elected In-ternational Director in June, 1952. He is apast president of the Deming club, past zonechairman and district governor and has arecord of 13 years' perfect attendance. Direc-tor Cooper is President of the Cooper Agency,Inc., and vice president of the Mimbres ValleyBank. He is a Mason, Shriner, and served asGrand High Priest of the Royal Arch Masonsof New Mexico. He has served as presidentof the New Mexico Association of InsuranceAgencies. Daniel Johnson, of Melrose, Mass., waselected International Director in June, 1952.He is a past president and past secretary ofthe Melrose Lions club, past district governorof district 33-N and has served as chairmanof the Massachusetts Governors Council, sec-retary-treasurer of the NE Governors Counciland chairman of the Massachusetts Eye Re-search Council. Lion Johnson holds a degreein Electrical Engineering from WorchesterPolytechnic Institute and is now a Sales Engi-neer for the Buffalo Forge Company. A Masonand a Shriner, he is also a past president ofthe Worchester Tech Alumni Association anda member of Tau Beta Pi. He and his wife,Hazel, have one son, two daughters, and agranddaughter.

Robert Lee Gammon, S1'., Coolidge, Ari-zona, a Key member in the Coolidge Lionsclub, was elected International Director in1952at the International Convention. He is apast president of the Coolidge club and wasdistrict governor in 1949-50 and vice-chair-man of the Board of Governors in 1950-51.He is the holder of the International Exten-sion award and the 1000/0 District Governorsaward. Lion Gammon, who was born in WebbCity, Missouri, is active in civic affairs andwas the recipient of the Certificate of Appre-ciation award of the town of Coolidge and theCivic Work award of the Chamber of Com-merce. Director Gammon is a Methodist anda Mason. He is a pharmacist by profession.Lion Gammon and his wife, Fern Agnes, arethe parents of two sons.

C. W. McKee, Hays, Kansas, was elected aDirector at the International Convention inJune, 1952.He had previously served as chair-man of the Board of Governors. He servedas District 17-N governor in 1950-51, organ-izing 19 new Lions clubs. Born near Sterling,Kan., where he was educated, he attendedFort Hays, Kan., State College, St. JosephsMilitary College, and Sterling College. Hehas wheat land in Kansas, ranch land inColorado, producing oil investments, and man-ages personal real estate properties. He is amember of the Elks club, Knife and Forkclub, Pi Kappa Delta, Phi Sigma Epsilon,Knights of Columbus and the Catholic church.He is a national charter member and activelife member of the American War Dads. LionMcKee and his wife have four children andfour grandchildren.

C. T. Young, Pender, Nebraska, was elect-ed chairman of the Board of Governors duringthe International Convention in June, 1952.Lion "Cerny," who was born in McPherson,Kansas, has served his own club in manycapacities and has served his district as cabi-net secretary-treasurer, deputy district gov-ernor and district governor. He has a recordof five years perfect attendance. Formerly aneducator and athletic coach, Lion Young isnow in the insurance business. He is a Pres-byterian, a Mason, a member of the Quarter-back Club and has been active in many civicaffairs for which he has received many honorsand awards. Lion Young and his wife, Jean,have no children.

Edward J. Korbel, Chairman of the Boardof International Relations, is a Charter mem-ber and a Past President of the YorkvilleLions club of New York City. He is a MasterKey member and has had perfect attendancesince his club was organized. He has servedas Deputy District Governor, and as DistrictGovernor of 20-L, and was Chairman of theState Council. From 1950 to 1952 he servedas a member of the International Board ofDirectors. Lion Korbel was born in New YorkCity and attended the American Institute ofBanking. He is an Assistant Vice Presidentof Manufacturers Trust Company, in chargeof the Yorkville office. He is married and hasone son.

Raymond A. Galipeau, of Merrill, Wis., waselected International Director in June, 1952,at the International Convention in MexicoCity. Lion Ray is a Key of Nations memberand has held all offices in his own Lions clubwith the exception of Secretary. He has alsoserved his district as zone chairman and dis-trict governor. Lion Galipeau was educatedin the schools of Wisconsin and also attendedbusiness college in that state. He is now inthe real estate and recreation business. Direc-tor Ray is a Roman Catholic, a member of theKnights of Columbus, an Eagle, and a memberof the Chamber of Commerce and severalchurch and business organizations. Lion Gali-peau is married and he and his wife, Helene,have three daughters and one son.
