DESIGN CAMPUS OF THE FUTURE

Page 13: Lise Ny Buhl - Portfolio

The aim of this project was to create a creative campus environment in close connection with the center of Aalborg. The challenge was to make a solution that could embrace the values of the study programs that frames the new design school in order to challenge and rethink the traditional composition of a creative, educational institution. Furthermore, the chal-lenge was to implement and invite the public to interact and participate in different activities at the site, in order to develop and strengthen the physical and social composition of the area.

Throughout the project phase the idea of a creative design school and its surrounding urban spaces has been developed in order to translate the traditional notion of a campus into a public space. The potentials and structural composition of the contexthavebeenanalyzed,whichhasledtomoderncampusenvironmentthatimplicatesthenotionofplayinordertoestablishnewandinnovativemeetingplatforms,whichallowsknowledgeexchangeandinteractionbetweendifferentusersofthesite.Theneedsandphysicallayoutofthecreativeeducationshavebeenclarifiedandhasresultedinanactive,play-fulandinvitingarea.Creativityandplayhavebeenfusedandinbetweenthecrossingofdifferentdesignfieldsanddifferentusers a new synergy arises. This synergy has been made visible in the structural organization of the University but also in theaestheticalexpressionoftheUniversity, thestudenthousesandtheurbanspaces.Thenotionofpushandpull, whicharose from the concept of a simple child play, has been applied to the physical form in order to underline interaction zones, but the physical forms have been handled differently in accordance with the main purpose of the push and pull action.

Basedonthewishofcreatingmorespaceforexperienceandinteraction, theidentifiedactivityorplayzoneshavebeendeveloped into more active meeting platforms. The activity zones have been developed individually in order to mark the different functions happening in and characterizing the different spaces. An idea catalogue of different temporary activi-tieshasbeenoutlined,inordertoemphasizeexamplesandintentionsinthedifferentspaces.The straight line on the harbor front has been manipulated and dragged further into the center of the area. The break of the harbor should try to establish a stronger connection between passing dwellers and the activities of the area.

PLANNING THE TEMPORARY CITY

Page 19: Lise Ny Buhl - Portfolio

The municipality of Aarhus has a strong vision for the development of Aarhus harbor. Already in 1999 a major master plan of the area was presented, but today a predominant part of the harbor is still in progress and large areas are still to be planned. However, as the municipality has applied for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2017, the progress has been strongly increased and many new projects are now rising along the harbor front. Among these projects is a new library, a engineeringschool, arecreationalharborarea, officebuildings, studenthousesandalargenumberofapartmentblocks. The harbor and the water has many potentials in terms of recreation, culture and play, but the municipality of Aarhus has onlytosomeextendtriedtoexploittheseaspectsinthedevelopmentofthearea.AsthecitywishestobeselectedasECoC2017, they have to think of other and more temporary methods and tools in order to present an inviting and inspirational environment along the entire harbor front by the end of 2016.

This project focuses on a temporary master plan, activating the majority of Pier 3 from 2012 and until 2020. Today, Pier 3 accommodates Mols-linien (a ferry link) and holds a large area servicing as Container Park. In the 1999-master plan Mols-Linien are supposed to leave Pier 3 and move to a large area in the other end of the harbor, but due to a delay in the planning progress the ferry will not leave Pier 3 until 2020. This means that Mols-linien will still operate from Pier 3 in 2017, and consequently this area will stand apart from the rest.

A strong vision in Aarhus is to connect the harbor and the city center. Many of the new activities are based on culture and creativity, but Navitas Park – Aarhus’ new school of engineering – will also play an important role. The rustic setting of the oldharborcreatesaninterestingbackgroundfortheunfoldingofamoretechnologicalfield.Acuriousthoughtistoseethe result of a new collaboration between Mols-Linien and Navitas Park. In order to rebel against the rigid master plan from 1999, Navitas and Mols-Linien will create a new setting for a more offbeat area – an antipole to the old city center and the neat harbor front. Pier 3 will function as an urban laboratory testing and inventing new relations within knowledge, educa-tion, innovation and urban life. The user groups should span wide and attract a much broader audience than the café-latte segment that currently are the most distinct users of the new harbor area.KeepingtheferryatPier3andincorporatingitintheexperimentseemstobeaninterestingthought.Theferryisanaturalgenerator of tourism and many people already access this area of Aarhus on a daily basis. Therefore it becomes natural to start a new process at Pier 3, as new interventions are quickly displayed to a big and wide range of people. Due to the constantflowofpeopleonPier3,itwillalsobecomeeasiertoattractpeoplefromthecitycenter.

An urban catalyst kiosk – pavilion – has been designed and should be used as an initial tool in order to indicate that some-thing is going to change at Pier 3. The design has been inspired by a cocoon - which is the stadium just before giving life to a new creature. The stairs going through the building is the cocoons larva, and leads the visitor through the pavilion.

Aalborg harbor front has currently been undergoing a cultural development, changing from an old industrial area into an innovative and creative cluster of activities. Recently the Utzon Center and Nordkraft have been added to the harbor front, while a new music house and a campus for Architecture & Design are still in progress. This interesting development leaves the blank harbor front as a potential center of play, interaction, spontaneous meetings and creative activities.Theprojecttaskwastodesignahybridspotfloatinginthewaterwiththeabilitytolinkthedifferentfunctionsoftheharborfront. The harbor has many potentials but one should not limit the project to the harbor front, but should also see the water as an equal opportunity in terms of developing new concepts and spaces.

Thisprojecttakesitstartingpointinthewishtoconnecttheharborandthewater.TheCrossisafloatingplatformthatholds a small café and a gallery which displays different student projects throughout the year. The idea is to create a center for the creative cluster, inviting students, teachers, and others to meet and interact. The platform challenges the relation-ship between public and private as the roof of the gallery and the platform itself ha a public and inviting character. On the other hand, the gallery, the café and the roof of the café has a more private character, where one chooses to take part of the activities of others or not.The platform balances between public and private, as the sun chairs integrated in the stairs on the platform creates more intimate spots on the deck. The chairs invite people to a more long termed stay enjoying the view of the Limfjord.

Seenfromtheothersideofthefjordtheplatformappearsasatwolightplansfloatingontopofeachother.Oneplanrepresents the harbor while the other represents the water. In order to accentuate the concept and the meeting between water and harbor, the building volumes are constructed with large glass facades. The glass facades underline the lightness of the platform and provide visitors inside with a view of the fjord.

DISCOVERING THE CITY´S LAYERS

Page 27: Lise Ny Buhl - Portfolio

The aim of this project was to create a new metro station at Nørrebro in regards to the new City Circle Line in Copenhagen. The challenge was to make a solution that could embrace the needs of a contemporary transit systems and the layer of social geography, in order to invite both passengers and inhabitants to interact. Furthermore the challenge of economic and social growth lay within the potentials and the problems of the district, which had to be combined in a common vision in ordertostrengthenthecompositionoftheexistingarea.Commonforallaspectsoftheprojectdevelopmentfromanalysisto design was to work with scale plus the spatial and conceptual considerations.

Throughout the project the idea of a transit space and its surrounding urban space has been develop, in order to transform theusualfunctionofatransitstationintoapublicspace.Thepotentialsandstructuralcompositionofthecontexthavebeen analyzed, which has resulted in a modern transit station that relates to all users of the station whether they are a part ofthestationslayeroffloworidentity.Theneedsandactivitiesoftheusershavebeenclarified,whichhasresultedinanac-tive and inviting area. The problem in this minor project was to conduct an analysis and mapping in a suburb of Aalborg. The mapping was nar-rowed to a bicycle path running through a residential area and passing through a tunnel underneath a busy main road. The stretch selected starts and ends by the passing of two speed bumps on the bicycle path – one before and one after the tunnel.

The bicycle path seems incoherent and as a bicyclist it is hard to read the meaning of the speed bumps. The surrounding areadoesnotorientatetowardsthepathwhichcreatesaclosedpassageandthisexpressionismerelyfurtherenhancedby the tunnel.

The tunnel’s immediate function is to ensure access between to intersected areas, but instead it appears as a dismissive and unsafe barrier. With the intention of redesigning the area, the primary focus should be put on the tunnel and how the spaceunderneaththeroadcanberedevelopedintoanattractiveurbanspaceratherthananinsignificantgap.Therebyboth physical and social potentials in the area will be strengthened. In order to implement changes and convert the physical reading of the tunnel, it is essential to add new programs and func-tions that will reinforce the positive qualities of the tunnel. Based on the wish to strengthen the physical and social bonds between the northern and southern side of the main road, it is important to create activity that encourages interaction andconnection.Thiscanforexamplebemarkets,concerts,exhibitionsandthelike.AreferencetosimilarprojectsistheHigh Line, New York.

In addition, it is also important to work with lighting conditions and a “shared space” that can create more awareness con-cerningtheflowofpedestriansandbicyclistsonthepath.

THE FORTRESS

LINKING THE CITY CENTER

Page 37: Lise Ny Buhl - Portfolio

Haderslev is located in the southern part of Denmark between the Triangle Region and the German border, which are two important suppliers of job and education opportunities. Compared to Germany and the Triangle Region the housing prices in Haderslev are fairly low, and so many people choose to live Haderslev but to work someplace else where the opportuni-ties and wages are better. Consequently, the municipality of Haderslev has realized that they need to strengthen the town’s position as a place of living. Cultural heritage and the town’s historic background play important roles in relation to the identity of the city and should therefore be essential elements in the branding of Haderslev, but the new neighborhood ris-ing on the harbor should also be taken into consideration.

The site in Haderslev is located close to the city center and the new harbor front. Today the area houses an agricultural machinedealer,buthistoryrevealsthatanoldfortressusedtobelocatedonthisspecificsite.Withreferencetothehis-toric fortress in Haderslev, it is the vision to change the areas closed character into a positive quality. The areas outer walls should be considered as a protecting layer that shields and hides a dense and intimate city. Narrow streets and hidden backyards underline the intimate atmosphere and provide the area with a new sense of comfort and community.

In the center of the area s fortress rises and creates a different but interesting parallel between the modern and the his-toriccontext.Shinyfacadeswithatransparentandinvitingexpressioncreateadynamicspacewiththeopportunityforspontaneousinteractionbetweenactivitiesinsideandoutside.Asacontrasttothemodernexpressionofthefortress,theareaissurroundedbyagreenpark.Theparkdefinesandmarksthetransitionfromprivatetoamorepubliczonewhilealsocreating a green lung within the city.Behind the walls of the fortress is the areas dynamic and cultural center. This is where different users and new programs meet and interact. The areas permanent activities form the walls of the fortress, while the open space inside the fortress frames an urban scene where different spontaneous and temporary activities unfolds.

The fortress should be Haderslev’s new cultural center that creates an alternative gap in the city evolving around life, cul-ture, adventure and urban activities. New relations are formed and the distance between Haderslev’s historic center and new harbor is minimized.
