Debian-based

Debian GNU/Linux is a distribution that emphasizes free software. It supports many hardware platforms. Debianand distributions based on it use the .deb package format[1] and the dpkg package manager and its frontends.[2]

Linux Mint DebianEdition

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is a rolling distribution based on Debian Testing. Iavailable in both 32 and 64-bit as a live DVD with a Gnome desktop. The purpose ofLMDE is to look identical to the main Linux Mint edition and to provide the samefunctionality while using Debian as a base.[20]

Linux RouterProject

A defunct floppy-based distribution for routers and firewalls. Supplanted by Project.

MaemoA development platform for hand held devices such as the N900 Internet Tablets and other Linux-based devices.[21

MEPISFocuses on ease of use. Also includes lightweight variant called antiX. antiX is meanbe used on older computers with limited hardware.[22]

Ubuntu-based

Ubuntu is a distribution based on Debian, designed to have regular releases, aconsistent user experience and commercial support on both desktop and server.[48]

Official distributions

These Ubuntu variants simply install a set of packages different from the originalUbuntu, but since they draw additional packages and updates from the samerepositories as Ubuntu, all of the same software is available for each of them.[49]

Edubuntu

A complete Linux-based operating system targeted for primaryand secondary education. It is freely available with communitybased support. The Edubuntu community is built on the ideasenshrined in the Edubuntu Manifesto: that software, especially foreducation, should be available free of charge and that softwaretools should be usable by people in their local language anddespite any disabilities.[50]

KubuntuAn official derivative of Ubuntu using KDE instead of theGNOME or Unity interfaces used by default in Ubuntu.[51]

Lubuntu is a project that is an official derivative of the Ubuntuoperating system that is "lighter, less resource hungry and moreenergy-efficient", using the LXDE desktop environment.[52][53][54]

MythbuntuBased on Ubuntu and MythTV, providing applications forrecording TV and acting as a media center.[55]

Ubuntu forAndroid Designed for use with Android phones.[56]

Xubuntu

An official derivative of Ubuntu using Xfce. Xubuntu is intendedfor use on less-powerful computers or those who seek a highlyefficient desktop environment on faster systems, and uses mostlyGTK+ applications.[62]

BackBox

BackBox is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu. It has been developed to performpenetration tests and security assessments. Designed to be fast, easy to use and provide aminimal yet complete desktop environment, thanks to its own software repositories, alwaysbeing updated to the latest stable version of the most used and best known ethical hackingtools.[66]

BackTrack Developed by Offensive Security and designed for penetration testing.[67]

BlankOn Ubuntu-based distribution for users in Indonesia.[68]

BuildixAn Ubuntu-based Linux distribution, developed by Global IT professional services firm,ThoughtWorks. For agile developers.

Bodhi LinuxAn Ubuntu-based Linux distribution featuring the Enlightenment window manager andtargeting users who want minimum of preinstalled software or low system requirements.[69]

gNewSense

Designed for users who wish to use only free software. It is officially sponsored andrecommended by the Free Software Foundation. The project has also produced a set ofscripts that allow anyone to create a free distribution. In 2011, gNewSense will be based onDebian and no longer on Ubuntu.[74]

Gobuntu

Gobuntu was an official derivative of the Ubuntu operating system, aiming to provide adistribution consisting entirely of free software. It was officially announced by MarkShuttleworth on July 10, 2007, and daily builds of Gobuntu 7.10 began to be publiclyreleased. The project ended around the release of 8.04 and has since merged into mainlineUbuntu as a 'free software' option.[75]

Goobuntu An Ubuntu-based distribution used internally by Google. Not available outside of Google.

gOSUses the GNOME desktop environment with user interface enhancements to make it workmore like Mac OS X, it also features Google Apps, Picasa, Google Gadgets and otherweb-based applications, and comes with Wine 1.0 pre-installed.

GuadalinexUbuntu-based distribution promoted by the local government of Andalucia, Spain, forhome users and schools.[76]

Linux Deepin

a Linux distribution based on the Ubuntu Linux Distribution. The Chinese version istailored for Chinese language users and includes preconfigured Chinese applications suchas simplified Chinese input methods, Chinese dictionaries, and Chinese TrueType fonts.From Version 11.12, Linux Deepin provides different ISO images for Chinese andEnglish.[71]

Joli OS

Joli OS (formely named Jolicloud) is in development and Pre-beta testing. Joli OS is builtupon Debian and Ubuntu 9.10, but is tweaked to be more suitable for computers that haveweaker specifications in terms of disk storage, memory and screen size. It is designed torun on relatively low-powered netbook computers.[77]

HP MiBased on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, designed by Canonical and HP for use on the HP Mini 1000and 110 series netbooks.[78]

Impi Linux South African and focuses on the enterprise and government sector.[79]

Karoshi A formerly PCLinuxOS-based distribution designed for use in schools.[80]

Kuki LinuxLightweight Ubuntu-based Linux distribution founded by João Ferro, built to be areplacement for the Linpus Linux Lite distribution on the Acer Aspire One.[81]

Linux MintLinux Mint synchronizes its release-cycle with Ubuntu's, and is tailored to user-friendlinessfor desktop users. Also features a Debian-based edition.[82]

LinuxMCELinux Media Center Edition, a Kubuntu based distribution that provides in-depth HTPCfunctionality as well as home automation.[83]

LinuxTLE A Thai Linux distribution.[84]
