Summary of the M. Sc. Thesis

Title: Use of Microprocessor in Analog-to-Digital converters Design
Due to the rapid development in the field of digital signal processing, control systems and
instrumentation the demand for low-cost analogue to digital converters are intended to link the
domain of discrete numbers to the world of Physical quantities, which by nature are continuous.
Many A/D Converters, especially those having high resolution and/or high speed suffer from
hardware complexity and hence they are expensive.
In this thesis, the use of microprocessor as a part of the A/D converters circuit is considered. This
leads to a reduction in the number of components requires for converter realization. Two types of
converter structures namely: the successive approximation and multiplexed flash A/D converters
are implemented using TMS 9980A microprocessor. The first structure has a 12-bit resolution while
the second, due to the input/output limitations of the available microprocessor, has only 6-bits
resolution.
The multiplexed flash converter is a new economical A/D converter structure. It gives a good
compromise between the high speed of the parallel comparators A/D converters and the circuit
complexity of the cyclic converters. Both methods have provided acceptable performance for low
frequency operation [few kHz]. Such frequency limitation is mainly dictated by the execution time
of the available microprocessor system. However, It is to be expected that faster systems would be
soon on the market so that higher sampling frequencies for12-bit resolution for using a successive
approximation routine was 2.7777 kHz, while that for the multiplexed-flash type was 9.6899 kHz
for 6-bit resolution.

Title: Use Speech Synthesis System For Modern Standard Arabic
In technical literature the development of several speech synthesis techniques have been described.
Recently, the automatic conversion of text-to-synthesis speech attracts a great attention from both
engineers and linguist. Generally spoken messages from their written form can be produced as follows:
1) Phonemic transcription of the text representing the input message, i.e., converting the input text
to a series of phoneme symbols.
2) Phonetic transcription of the phonemic one by converting the phoneme symbols to phonetic
elements (e.g., syllables, diphones, phones, phonecodes, …..etc) by using a set of rules. These
rules depend on the phonetic structure of the language.
3) Converting the phonetic elements to a series of concatenated speech units (e.g. syllables,
diphones, phonemes, micro-elements) from prerecorded speech units or from stored acoustic
parameters. Another set of rules can be used to govern the transition between various speech
units. The direct concatenation of these units produces monotonous, robot-like, “segmental
level” speech.
4) Superimposing the appropriate supra-segmental features (stress, intonation, and rhythm) on the
concatenated speech units to produce more natural speech.
5) Converting the rhythmic concatenated speech units to control parameters. These parameters
represent suitable input to a synthesizer device. The output of the synthesizer device is a
rhythmic speech waveform representing the written message.
6) Finally, the spoke message is produced.
The Arabic language is spoken by more than 200 million people and if it is to be present in the actual
modern application in computers, communications, automated offices, etc, a lot of research is
required. It is quite evident that if the interfacing between the processing computer and the Arabic
language, both spoken and written, is achieved, we would see better development of management,
industry, and education in the Arab world.
More recently, many attempts have been carried out for the development of text-to-speech converter
systems for Arabic language. As far as I know four scientific centers in the Arab world are concerned

with the development of such systems. These are: IBM Cairo Scientific center; Faculty of
Engineering, Cairo University; IBM Kuwait Scientific Center and Faculty of Sciences, Mohamed V
University in Morocco. A rule based transcription system has been developed in the first two centers.
In IBM Kuwait Scientific Center a method for synthesizing Arabic speech by using segments
(synthesis units) which are parts of syllables has been introduced and implemented as a non-real-time
text-to-speech system on a PC. In Morocco an Arabic synthesis-by-rule system is simulated on a
PDP11/ 34 minicomputers. A real-time system is not available yet.
In this thesis, a speech synthesis system for unrestricted modern standard Arabic text is described.
The real-time text-to-speech converter system (MULTIVOX) has been adapted to the synthesis of
Arabic speech. The main components of (MULATIVOX) are:
1) Speech sounds set for the synthesized language, in general 33-40 sounds;
2) Text handler and transformer, grapheme-to-phone-code converter;
3) Acoustic data base, (acoustic building units);
4) Rule system;
5) Prosody module;
6) Speech synthesizer device.
The main objectives of this dissertation are:
1) To provide acoustic information about the speech sounds and sound combination of modern
standard Arabic.
2) To deal with the specific phonetic features of the Arabic language such as assimilation,
pharyngealization, etc.
3) To give a new synthesis method for the synthesis of Arabic speech.
4) To deal with Arabic integer numbers from 1 to 109.
5) To investigate the supra-segmental features of the Arabic speech; namely intonation, stress and
rhythm.
6) To adopt the above objectives to the development of real-time text-to-speech system for Arabic
(Arabic version of MULTIVOX).
