2016LISTEN …
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A COMPLETE CITY MAP, CERTAINLY NOT IN A CITY LIKE GHENT. STREETS TEND TO CLOSE, RESTAURANTS AND PUBS POP-UP AND DISAPPEAR… EVEN WE LOOSE OURSELVES IN THE MAZE OF THE MEDIEVAL HISTORIC CITY CENTRE. YET, THERE IS THIS MAP, UP TO DATE (FOR NOW), WITH THE MOST ENTICING HOTSPOTS.
ENJOY THEM WHILE YE CAN!
01. The Sint-Veerleplein street lanterns light up every time a baby is born in Ghent.
02. In 1991 grunge band Nirvana played at the Vooruit Concerthall – while smashing their guitars to pieces, a big piece ew in the audience, hitting a girl right in the smacker – she lost her front teeth.
03. The Just Judges-panel (part of the Ghent Altarpiece) has been stolen since 1934 – nd it and get a reward (a few kegs of Gruut!)
04. Ghent Creative City of Music – it’s an o cial title. Why? 600 active bands. Nu said.
05. The yearly Ghent Festivities (third week of July) welcome more than a million visitors. Fights rarely happen (cat ghts do). We know how to drink and party!
06. If there is one town where you should go full veggie (not full retard!), it is Ghent. We launched Thursday Veggie-day, worldwide, which gave us the title Veggie Capital of Europe!
07. Funny story (and a little sad): just a few meters from one another two cuberdons-sellers (‘neuzekes’ – Ghent nose) try to snatch away each other’s customers. Sometimes they really ght, biting each other in the nose. They shouldn’t.
08. Ghent is a city of beer – Gruut, Crabbelaer, Gentse Strop, Piraat, Augustijn, Gulden Draak, … you should try them all. Not in one go, mind you.
09. Did you spot the dragon on the Belfry? Legend says that it came ying in from Constantinopel in the 14th century? Those were the days!
10. Ghent has some hidden gems. The garden & vineyard at St. Peter’s Abbey is a must visit. Really!
11. At the Coupure, take a slow-boat and discover the beauty of our canals and the picturesque painter’s route.
