It was aCommission!
It was commissioned by the Nebraska Wind Consortium and Brian Anderson (the Consortium Chairman)
It took 4 years of correspondence and work to be completed (The Instrumentalist Sep. 2005)
The contract was signed in 1998 and it specified that the piece needed to be categorized as grade 3-4

“...there just isn’t enough lush, beautiful music written for winds” - Whitacre
pastoral melodies and harmonies were inspired by the English Romantics like Vaughan Williams and Elgar
written with simple rhythms but its musical maturity comes from the complex harmony throughout
