LISTERS' CORNER

Welcome to the 2004 edition of Listers’ Corner, especially to newcomers Ken Thorpe from Cote Saint-Luc, QC and Bill Wilson of Calgary. This will likely be the last issue of Listers’ Corner that I compile. I have enjoyed putting together the newsletter since 1996, but it is time to pass on the responsibility to somebody new. If anyone is interested in the job, drop me a line. Kingston artist Corina Brdar drew the cover illustration of the Long-tailed Duck. According to the ABA’s listing rules Crested Myna is no longer a countable bird in the ABA area. Roger Foxall, Hugh Currie and myself have removed it from our North American lists. I trust the rest of you who have seen this species in Vancouver have done likewise. LIFE LISTS

Again, I will be using North American totals from Tony White’s Birding Newsletter, which is current up to November 2003. As with the ABA, Clements' 5th edition is the authority used for world species and families. To be published a birder needed a life list of 40% of the provincial/territorial total in PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador and the territories and 50% of the provincial total in the other provinces. Thresholds are 350 for Canada, 500 for the ABA area and 1000 for ATPAT and world life lists. Thresholds are shown after an area’s total list. Life lists are the most recent entries that I received up to the end of last year. An asterisk (*) indicates that I did not receive that person’s list for 2003. Figures in parentheses following a birder's name are increases reported since last year. This year's report includes threshold-breaking lists from 105 birders, which is down four from last year and includes 12 people that I hadn't heard from by the time this issue went to the printer. The number of birders that made the Canadian and ABA thresholds were each down by two and are now 84 and 69, respectively. With the addition of four, the number of listers in the North American category is now at 21. One of the new North American listers (Paul Mackenzie) now has the highest list at 1368 species. Forty-five of us are now reporting world life lists of at least 1000 species. The 46 ATPAT lists reported here is two less than last year. Those with a reportable number of bird families seen grew again and are now at 32. Except for the addition of five to Joan and Malcolm McDonald’s Alberta lists, most of the top listers in each province managed to add one or two species. Eric Tull improved his Yukon list by 15 and Alan Fishkin put 17 new marks on his Alberta checklist. A Wilson’s Storm-Petrel brought Alan Wormington’s Ontario life list to 427. The top two listers for Canada (Roger Foxall and Hue MacKenzie) each added one species, but are still well short of the all time record. Gordon Payne sent in the most improved Canadian and ABA lists, which were +18 and +50, respectively. With over 700 ABA birds, Peter Landry’s 11 new ones in 2003 are significant. Many world birders did some globetrotting last year. David Stirling visited Australia and New Zealand again. Gillian Horgan and Martin Bowman’s destinations included California, Australia, France and Madagascar. I spent two fantastic weeks in Ecuador with Scott Connop where he showed me over 500 new birds. However, Juliette Pellerin’s 606 new species in 2003 was the biggest reported increase. With relatively few new birds left to find, it is worth pointing out Martin Edwards’ 123 new species. Martin has seen over 76% of the world’s avifauna. Due in part to spending time in Quebec, Hilaire and Rose-Aline Chiasson posted ATPAT increases of 144 and 156, respectively. However, with 369 John Luce added the most new ATPAT ticks in 2003. By adding 25 Eric Tull had an outstanding year with his nation leading ATPAT total. One more year like that and he’ll be over 3000 in that category. Thirty-two birders are now world family listing, which is an increase of one from last year. Representatives from my 14 new families included Hoatzin and Gray-winged Trumpeter. The most improved totals were from Gillian Horgan and Martin Bowman who each added twenty-three families to their life list.

Year list cutoff thresholds were 30% of the provincial/territorial list for PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador and the territories, 40% for the other provinces and 80% of the life list cutoff for Canada, ATPAT, ABA area and the world. Thresholds are shown after an area’s total list. Seventy-seven birders made the cutoffs for one or more year lists, which is the same as last year. None of the long-standing big year list records were exceeded in 2003, but last year the following notable provincial totals were sent in: Eric Tull, 119 in YT; Bill Wilson, 281 in AB; Robert Parsons, 289 in MB; Juliette Pellerin, 222 in NB. WINTER LISTS

Winter lists cover the period from 1 December to 28 (29) February. Winter life lists - the birds seen during those months in any year - are reported as of the end of 2003. Single winter lists are of species seen during one winter. Listed are a birder's best ever single winter list and their list for the winter of 02/03. The thresholds for winter life lists are 25% for Canada, British Columbia and Ontario, 15% for PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador and the territories and 20% for the other provinces. Thresholds for single winter lists were 5% less. Thresholds are shown after each category in all jurisdictions. Fifty-nine birders submitted winter lists (unchanged from last year) that met or exceeded these thresholds. Alex Gray found 31 new species in British Columbia, but Danny Tyson continues to be that province’s top winter lister. Newfoundland and Labrador’s Doug Phelan improved his list there by eight. The most improved Canadian winter life lists came from some of the most active winter birders (John Luce and Alex Gray), who both added 15 ticks. In 02/03 Dave Milsom and Doug Phelan challenged their home province’s single winter records (already their own) in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador, respectively. Last winter, Juliette Pellerin was only seven species short of the New Brunswick single winter record of 80.

For all but a few northern areas, the thresholds for local lists have been set at 150 for life lists and 120 for best year lists. Local life lists are reported as received by the end of 2003. Local lists are organized on a province by province basis. This year 86 birders (same as last year) met the threshold for 151 local areas (unchanged). At 368, Alan Wormington continues to have the top local list (Ontario’s Chatham-Kent/Essex/Lambton Counties), to which he added White-faced Ibis and Common Eider. Bill Wilson’s newly reported Calgary total is now the top one (315) for that city’s checklist, which was revised in 2003. Calgary has a newly I was glad to see Eric Tull has now sent Listers’ Corner first ever list for Edmonton. Hopefully somebody will do the same for Regina one day too. Rose-Aline Chiasson and Rosita Lanteigne have now each seen 300 species on the Acadian Peninsula and Joan Czapalay has passed that total in Nova Scotia’s Shelburne County. Interprovincial lists cover all or large parts of two or more provinces or territories. The lists included here are merged lists of the species seen in the area, rather than lists formed by adding provincial lists together. Calgary’s Joan and Malcolm McDonald both added five species to their Prairie Provinces lists. The biggest gains in Atlantic Canada were from Joan Czapalay (29) and Ian Roseby (45). ------- Overall this year, 1692 lists have passed thresholds, which is up 12 from last year. These lists are from 105 birders -- an average of 16.1 lists per birder. Fifteen listers reported fewer than five lists, but nine of us had more than twice the average number of lists that passed their respective thresholds: Hue MacKenzie 33; Angus MacLean and Jo Ann MacKenzie 36; Robert Parsons 39; Wayne Neily 45; Alex Gray 51; Eric Tull 54, Burke Korol 84 and Blake Maybank 118. I hope this year’s issue made it to everyone because I had a major computer malfunction last autumn and my mailing list may not have been up to date.
