Preface

This guidebook was developed to provide our students in the Center for International Studies with some beginning tips and links to start your search for careers and internships

The Center is proud of the successes of our alumni who made Tiller Hall their home away from home dedicated themselves to learning and have begun successful careers

Their successes are demonstration of the currency of an international studiesdevelopment education in the global marketplace

International Studies prepares students for the diversity of career options that are sampled in this guidebook and we are proud of our tradition of teaching mentoring and preparing our students to make great strides in the professional world

The material herein is certainly not exhaustive and intended as an initial guide to help you begin your career preparation

You might notice that there are no job titles called ldquointernational studies-istrdquo This tempts students to make the mistake that the only jobs out there are in diplomacy or teaching In fact we estimate that less than 15 of our graduates go into foreign service or teaching The majority seek employment in the private sector non-profit and public sectors in a variety of careers ranging from law customs brokerage finance and compliance and logistics Quite a few start up their own businesses

Your search for a career starts with you ndash what do you want to do what are you equipped to do and what are you going to do to build your resume while at UST

With an entry level hire employers are not expecting the candidate to be an expert in the field They are looking for someone that meets the basic knowledge and skill sets required for the position and all or some of the following attributes bull Reliable ndash will show up to work every day and meet deadlines without fail bull A fast learner ndash You will be trained in the technology techniques and processes

of the company Do you catch on quickly Can you master the material quickly with little remedial assistance

Different employers require different forms of documentation so this is a general list Start NOW developing the content and connections for these items

Cover letter ndash a letter that states your interest and qualifications for a position that speaks directly to

that position and company Resume ndash a resume that clearly lists your qualifications and attributes that qualify you as the ldquobest

personrdquo for the job Resume should be sculpted for the position for which you are applying Make sure to include ldquopower wordsrdquo in the resume Your resume may be scanned for initial review by software programmed to search for power words Do your homework to see which powerwords are common in the sectorcompany to which you are applying

References ndash Typically two or three references that can speak directly to what you are telling an

employer in your cover letter and interviews Quite often at least one of these references is a professor with whom you have had multiple classes and in whose classes you have performed extremely well Students that are aloof disengaged disinterested and with poor attendance may find it difficult to obtain strong letters from faculty

Personal Narrative ndash During an interview you will be asked why you have applied for this position

and company to explain your educational background and how this is useful to the employer motivate the hiring individual to want to hire you by demonstrating a professional and personable demeanor and ldquosellrdquo yourself and your abilities

This guidebook was developed to provide our students in the Center for International Studies with some beginning tips and links to start your search for careers and internships

The Center is proud of the successes of our alumni who made Tiller Hall their home away from home dedicated themselves to learning and have begun successful careers

Their successes are demonstration of the currency of an international studiesdevelopment education in the global marketplace

International Studies prepares students for the diversity of career options that are sampled in this guidebook and we are proud of our tradition of teaching mentoring and preparing our students to make great strides in the professional world

The material herein is certainly not exhaustive and intended as an initial guide to help you begin your career preparation

You might notice that there are no job titles called ldquointernational studies-istrdquo This tempts students to make the mistake that the only jobs out there are in diplomacy or teaching In fact we estimate that less than 15 of our graduates go into foreign service or teaching The majority seek employment in the private sector non-profit and public sectors in a variety of careers ranging from law customs brokerage finance and compliance and logistics Quite a few start up their own businesses

Your search for a career starts with you ndash what do you want to do what are you equipped to do and what are you going to do to build your resume while at UST
