A good vendor will deliver high-quality products and services at an affordable cost. A great vendor will present new opportunities that will propel your company forward.

Distinguished Service Delivery

When choosing a vendor, you’ll need more than just rhetoric about customer service. Look for evidence that service delivery is a core competence.



Robust Technology

The vendor’s systems should materially enhance your end-to-end work flow from service delivery to transaction processing to performance reporting and beyond. Pick a vendor who actively invests in the maintenance and modernization of their core technology.



Strength & Stability

Remember, you want your suppliers to be financially viable, now and in the future. Research the vendor’s financial performance for the past three years. Get help from your corporate Controller when interpreting financial data.



Affordable Cost

Vendor services must be cost-efficient – as defined by you. Analyze how different pricing scenarios affect the long term cost/benefit of your business. Build a spreadsheet so you can test the proposed contract terms in a variety of economic scenarios.



Internal Control

The vendor should disclose financial losses and/or lapses in internal control -- past and present or anticipated -- that could adversely affect the value of your transaction.



Business Continuity Planning

Review the specifics of the vendor’s emergency preparedness and disaster recovery processes. Ensure that the vendor’s business continuity plans will dovetail with your own.



Professional References

Talk to your counterparts in other companies who do business with the vendor. This is a good way to find out what you can expect after the sale.


Vendor relationships are costly … … especially the high-risk or high-visibility ones.
