This original documentary, titled "With a Little Help from My Friends", contains a series of interviews of various individuals with different types of disabilities, including Autism, Parkinson's Disease, Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke, and Cerebral Palsy. Also, several leading health professionals and researchers with knowledge of the aforementioned disabilities will be interviewed and they will tell us more about each disability and the preconceived notions that our society has of people with disabilities. The event will feature David Jones, CEO and Founder of Florida Disabled Outdoor Association, as the guest speaker. Additionally, Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare and Hands of Hope members will be offering hands on demonstrations, as well as informational stands, on the various disabilities presented in the documentary. There will also be performances by the North Florida Parkinson’s Awareness choir, along with raffles, prizes, and many free giveaways. Foods and refreshments will be provided. LEARN MORE ABOUT GARNET AND GOLD GOES GREEN The Garnet & Gold Goes Green recycling program provides fans the opportunity to recycle their beverage containers with the intention of decreasing the large amounts of waste and litter surrounding Doak Campbell stadium. G4 volunteers act as the friendly face of recycling to the thousands of fans who attend FSU football games each year. All G4 hours qualify as service hours for the ServScript program. Approximately 20 to 40 volunteers including individuals and organizations are needed for each home game to assist fans. Participants are asked to arrive at the stadium 2.5 hours before the start of the game and stay for a little while after kickoff. Sign up today by emailing [email protected] with your name, contact information, and the dates you'd like to help out. This year's GGGG volunteers will be honored for their hard work with a special BBQ with President Barron during the spring semester. STUDENTS FOR EDUCATION REFORM INTEREST EVENT Students for Education Reform (SFER) is a leadership development and advocacy organization that expands the human capital pipeline by preparing undergraduates to be leaders through learning and engagement opportunities in the field of education. They fill the void of student voices in the education reform movement by advocating for the policies that drive improved student outcomes. Come join them for a casual, engaging conversation surrounding how we, as college students, can help end the educational achievement gap in the United States and free ice cream! THE VILLAGE SQUARE TAKES ON A DECADE OF CHANGE On Tuesday, September 13, The Village Square will spend an evening sorting through the implications of the changes in “Ten Years Time: 9/11, The Heart of America, The Shadow of the Middle East.” The program will be moderated by the FSU Center for the Advancement of Human Rights’ Mark Schlakman, coordinator of the Human Rights & National Security in the 21st Century lecture series. Prominent attorney

Barry Richard will examine the critical balance between liberty and security, followed by a discussion of domestic security imperatives with law enforcement officials from the FBI, FDLE & Department of Justice and ending with a look at the clash or convergence of America and the Islamic World. The program is the kick-off event in The Village Square’s new “Dinner at the Square” season “It’s the End of the World as We Know It, And I Feel Fine?” Three programs will examine the decade of tumultuous change that started that fateful September day. The Lighthouse of the Big Bend is a nonprofit agency dedicated to guiding people through vision loss. Our mission is to assist people with vision loss in their pursuit of independence. Free services are provided on an outreach (one on one) or group basis and are provided without charge, without regard to individual or family income level, race, creed, age, disability or national origin. Each year, the Lighthouse holds the Paula Bailey Dining in the Dark benefit - and tickets are on sale now for the October 2nd benefit! GOOD NEWS OUTREACH IS LOOKING FOR HELP Good News Outreach, Inc. is an organization that has served the Tallahassee community for more than twenty years through their mission to feed the hungry and provide shelter for the homeless. This year they are focused on serving school aged children who are residents of their campus for single parents and children. They are looking for assistance in whatever way individuals can contribute. For more information, check out their website. INTERESTED IN STARTING A CHAPTER OF SOS? Students Offering Support (SOS) is a charitable sustainable social venture that develops and supports SOS chapters residing within post-secondary schools across North America. Each University SOS chapter raises money to raise roofs through raising marks during our ‘Exam-AID’ group review sessions, taught and coordinated by student volunteers for university and high school students. Each year, the money raised is spent creating sustainable education projects in developing nations on annual outreach trips. THE COLLECTION ON GAINES NEEDS YOUR HELP

The Collection on Gaines seeks to enliven and energize the west end of Gaines Street in Tallahassee, bringing quality resale items together and by providing a gathering place for music, art and more. The proceeds from all of these ventures benefit the Refuge House and the women it serves. They are in need of fun-loving, responsible volunteers to help them keep the store looking and running fabulously. From sorting,

tagging, and stocking goods, to customer service, to keeping the inside and outside looking great, all support is welcome. SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES MENTOR TRAINING THIS WEEK – DON’T MISS OUT

Youth Programs makes a wonderful difference in the lives of students in grades K-12 served by Leon County Schools. All mentors gain valuable experiences: interacting with children; learning and applying tutoring skills in reading, writing, math and science; and providing a much-needed service in school sites as well as after-school programs. If you are prepared to make a yearlong commitment (10-12 hours per week, 300 hours in total), check out this page for more information. Volunteers are needed in a number of different capacities including, but not limited to, festival and parade set-up, manning drink stations, helping compile race results, passing out awards, helping with Aid station, and errand running. ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES TUTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP If you would like to help newcomers develop their English skills, become a member of a great organization, meet people from around the world, and learn new skills from an accredited non-profit educational organization, then this is the workshop for you. Become a volunteer tutor. You do not need to know any other language other than English to be a tutor. Part I will be held tomorrow, September 8, 6pm–8pm. Part II will be held on Thursday, September 15, 6pm–8pm. All workshop sessions will be held in the Literacy Classroom on the 3rd floor of the Collins Main Library at 200 W. Park Avenue. THE SCBC IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS The University of Miami has challenged FSU to a blood drive competition. UM collected over 400 donors at their recent blood drive and we need to surpass that number in order to win the competition! On Monday, September 12th through Wednesday, September 14th, there will be three Bloodmobiles on campus from 9am–5pm. Please make plans to stop by one of these bloodmobiles to give your much needed, life-saving donation. The bloodmobiles will be located at the Strozier Library, Oglesby Union, and the College of Information. The Southeastern Community Blood Center (SCBC) needs volunteers (and blood donors) in order to make this a successful event. Volunteers are needed to assist at the tables outside the bloodmobiles, to greet and recruit donors, answer basic donation questions, and provide drinks and snacks after students donate. At the tables, students can also sign up for the national bone marrow registry. Representatives of the National Marrow Donor Program registry (Be A Match) will be on hand, as well as blood center employees but volunteers are needed to help with this as well. RUN WITH THE RED CROSS Volunteers are needed to assist with 4th Annual Robin Lotane Memorial Hurricane Run with the American Red Cross. The run helps raise money for local disaster victims. Adopting an agency gives student groups the opportunity to provide consistent, meaningful, on-going service and support to one nonprofit agency, while also giving the agency a more stable pool of volunteers. FORT BRADEN SCHOOL CARNIVAL NEEDS VOLUNTEERS Fort Braden School is in need of volunteers to help with their annual school carnival on October 14. They need people from 2pm-6pm and 6pm-10pm. Volunteers would help serve food, set up and clean up, and operate booths (with assistance). You can come for one shift, or both. Their Volunteer Coordinator will be available throughout the evening to certify volunteer hours. A short background check will need to be completed prior to the night of the event. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BIKE MS PGA TOUR

Volunteers are needed on October 1st and 2nd to help with Cycle to the Shore 2011 a Bike MS PGA Tour. Cyclists ride and raise funds to benefit all who live with Multiple Sclerosis locally and nationally, and also to provide support in research for a cure. Volunteers are also a crucial part of this event helping in all locations and every step of the way. As such, volunteers are needed throughout this event in St. Augustine, Daytona

HELP TALLAHASSEE SENIORS STAY HEALTHY Tallahassee Senior Center and Premier Health & Fitness Center are offering health screenings and health risk assessments to seniors at community centers on Tallahassee’s south side. Volunteers are needed to assist participants with completing the online health risk assessment. Mature, responsible and punctual students with great people skill are who they are seeking. This project will be completed in September. CAMP BOGGY CREEK IS LOOKING FOR GROUPS TO HELP Camp Boggy Creek (CBC) is a year round camp serving seriously ill children throughout Florida. They offer week-long summer sessions for the children and family retreat weekends for the whole family. There is no charge to come to Camp so they rely on the generous support of individuals, corporations, foundations and healthcare partners. They are currently signing up volunteers for one or more of these weekends and still have spots open for groups and individuals (especially lifeguards) at this time.
