Q. We is a novel by Russian author Yevgeny
Zamyatin completed in 1921. Set in the future, the protagonist D-503 lives in the One State, an urban nation constructed almost entirely of glass. The structure of the state is analogous to the prison design concept, where life is organized to promote maximum productive efficiency. People march in step with each other and wear identical clothing. There is no way of referring to people save by their given numbers. Males have odd numbers prefixed by consonants; females have even numbers prefixed by vowels.

“Mr. and Mrs. ___, X’s mother and father, lived very near. X was my best friend. Did you ever read her book, Y? I’m a character in that book, which takes place in the same small town in Alabama where we lived. Her father was a lawyer, and she and I used to go to trials all the time as children. We went to the trials instead of going to the movies.”

‘I would ask them to make an effort of imagination sufficient to understand the irritation (and on occasion the resentment) of an author, who finds, increasingly as he proceeds, his work treated as it would seem carelessly in general, in places recklessly, and with no evident signs of any appreciation of what it is all about.’

Q.
When X admitted that Y was “loosely based on a teacher I myself had,” the press tracked down John Nettleship, who taught X Chemistry at Wyedean School near Chepstow. When first approached, he was surprised, explaining, “I was horrified when I first found out. I knew I was a strict teacher but I didn’t think I was that bad.” In retrospect, however, he admitted that he was “a short-tempered chemistry teacher with long hair…[and a] gloomy, malodorous laboratory”

Bokklubben World Library is a series of classical books, mostly novels, published by the Norwegian Book Club since 2002. It is based on a list of the 100 best books, as proposed by one hundred writers from fifty-four different countries, compiled and organized in 2002 by the Book Club..
Each writer had to select his or her own list of ten books. The books selected by this process and listed here are not ranked or categorized in any way; the organizers have stated that "they are all on an equal footing," with the exception of X which was given the distinction "best literary work ever written.“ X?

Originally, Rodin’s famous sculpture was not supposed to be called the Thinker, but ‘The Poet’ as the sculpture was supposed to be a depiction of X. But it was not named so, as it did not hold with the popular view of X as a slim, tall figure. The name ‘The Thinker’ is credited to foundry workers who thought it bore a resemblance to Michelangelo’s sculpture of the same name.

Q.
It is said that X may have been possibly based the character Y on these people :
- Eliza Emily Donnithorne, an Australian woman who thought she was getting married in 1856. When she was stood up by the groom, she refused to change anything about the house; the wedding feast even sat out until it rotted into non-existence. Legend has it that Donnithorne never left the house again.
- Elizabeth Parker. This Shropshire, England, woman was also jilted on her wedding day and became quite reclusive afterward. The fact that Miss Parker’s house was called ________ Court seems like it must be more than coincidence.
