it is amidst the afterpains of the twentieth century that our story takes place, in the year 2013, that
harbinger of a new historical turning point and a year in which occurs the baffling abduction of the
reclusive bestselling author Jonas hecker on an island in southern italy; a year when the world-famous
corsican artist céleste will experience her last summer on earth; and an equally fateful year for the Ber-
lin photographer Marie Bach and her companion, the philosopher Julius seelenberg.
At center of the novel, which suspensefully intertwines five stories and extends from europe to Japan, is
the 99-year-old céleste salvatori, queen of the art scene who fought in the French resistance during the
second World War and whose life conceals a mortal secret. en route to the startling and brilliantly con-
ceived finale, we readers experience the ambiguity of human perception as well as the bedazzlements
and aberrations that we all undergo – in art, in life, in love.

in the endless icy expanse all those unanswered questions come rushing back and cause hanna to incre-

Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? is the title of a famous painting by Paul
gauguin, who created this work in 1897 when struggling with thoughts of suicide. these are basic hu-
man questions. today, in the face of the unprecedented influx of refugees, europe is once again asking
these same questions. What is our european culture? What roots and traditions form its basis? And what
still remains in our current tradition-forgetful society?
Angela contzen reveals that europe is an amazingly rich and diverse cultural space. over the past 2,000
years, it has been shaped by extremely varied spiritual influences: from rabbinical Judaism to Ancient
greek philosophy, from the roman empire to christianity, from ancient mythology to the old germanic
religions. over the centuries, these influences have shaped our art and the way we organize our years,
our philosophy and our knowledge, as well as our value system and our moral standards, our constitu-
tions and our legal frameworks. this opulent book of discovery will open your eyes to the richness of our
western traditions and may provide some answers to questions related to our cultural identity.

impressive encounters with great writers and thinkers
the special magic of europe’s landscape of the soul
Content
the filmmaker rüdiger sünner has spent the past three decades in search of europe’s spiritual traditions.
in his book, he describes encounters with influential role models and inspirations. he focuses on the
spiritual visions of the romantics, the nazis’ abuse of mythology, the peace missions of the swede Dag
hammarskjöld, the deep psychology of swiss psychologist c.g. Jung, the anthroposophy of the Austrian
rudolf steiner, the “mystic” Dorothee soelle, the “shaman” Joseph Beuys, and the romanian-born poet
Paul celan. Mysticism and mythology, the traditions of gnosticism, Kabbalah, alchemy, the world of the
celts and the teutons, and the legends around the holy grail. sünner’s book circles the periphery of a
“secret europe”, whose margins lie outside the borders of the cultural and religious mainstream.
the impulses rising out of this could also function as building blocks for a future europe that could be
more than just an economic federation. it could be a special landscape of the soul.

Rüdiger Sünner, born in 1953, studied music, german and phi-

Bärbel Wardetzkinarcissism, seduction and Power in Politics and society(ot: narzissmus, Verführung und Macht in Politik und
gesellschaft)
the bestselling author and narcissism expert on the dangerous com-
bination of power and narcissism
the reasons why so many narcissistic people end up in leadership
positions and what we can do to stand up to them
Content
in an age in which we are confronted with a wide swing to the right and an increasing number of autocratic
leaders, many people are wondering why narcissists are making such strong inroads.
What makes these people so attractive that they are frequently able to work themselves into positions of
power? Bärbel Wardetzki analyzes how exactly they seduce us - and what we get out of it.
narcissistic leaders have a particularly high degree of intersection with times of crisis. they gain popularity
through simplistic solutions, convincing people that only they can set things right again and save a country,
an organization, or a company. their motto: “i am the best to correct and solve everything my predecessors
screwed up.” the problem is, though, that the initial promises are only rarely kept, and in the end, we are left
standing with empty hands. the renowned psychotherapist Bärbel Wardetzki seeks to sharpen our under-
standing of the “post-truth” handling of the so-called “perceived truth,” as is typical for narcissists. she shows
us why we can only be immune to these individuals when we understand what we really hope to get from
them and which narcissistic needs within ourselves they are fulfilling.

Wolfgang Niessthe 1918-19 revolution: the Beginning of Democracy in germany(ot: Die revolution von 1918/19 – Der wahre Beginn
unserer Demokatrie)
“The greatest of all revolutions.” Theodor Wolff, Berliner Tageblatt,
November 1918
100 years ago: the first successful revolution in germany rings in
democracy
Content
the rebellion begins with the german high seas Fleet, as sailors refuse to engage in one final battle
against the British royal navy although germany had already capitulated. over the next few days, the
revolt spreads throughout the entire german reich, finally reaching Berlin 1918. thousands of workers
protest, the garrisons join in, the reichskanzler announces the Kaiser’s abdication, the monarchy collap-
ses, the republic is heralded.
the goal of the revolutionary movement is to abolish all traces of Prussian militarism and imperialism
from the government, and to build, from the ground up, a democratic society. Ultimately, the fear of a
Bolshevist revolution prevents the available space from being leveraged for a full eradication of the esta-
blished structures. nonetheless, the first democracy in germany is successfully founded.
Vividly and knowledgeably, Wolfgang niess depicts the peaceful and successful revolution that gave rise
to the first german republic. Furthermore, he explains why the revolution has been largely misunder-
stood, exploited or even forgotten. the time is ripe for it to be duly celebrated as the greatest and most
successful mass movement in germany’s history.

“Artificial intelligence is not a science fiction fantasy or the Power-

Part of the Successful mare Series “My Island”
Content
this story of iceland begins under palm trees in a fortress with a view to the indian ocean.
in the seventeenth century this is where the icelander Jón Ólafsson cast up, later recording his memories
of the orient in vibrant and luminous colors. Using this early testimony of icelandic wanderlust and urge
for discovery as his springboard, Karl Wetzig tells the story of this island hard on the Arctic circle and in
so doing plumbs the famous icelandic sagas while also drawing upon his own rich personal experience
of years spent in the island nation. he relates the peculiarities of the icelandic language, reykjavík’s drin-
king and bar culture, hikes over craggy lava fields, and icy new Year’s dips in snowy river landscapes.
Wetzig’s perspective on iceland and its rugged topography is informed by a great love and knowledge
of the island, and readers who tag along will do so with seeing eyes and off the well beaten paths to
discover new and rewarding sights.

Peter Mathewsharro harring(ot: harro harring – rebell der Freiheit)
the first and only biography of the forgotten rebel, freedom fighter,
poet and painter
150 years before the foundation of the eU, he was campaigning for a
united europe
Meet the tragic hero of political romanticism, the “unknown poet” of
the 19th century and a rediscovery of the first order.
Content
Born in 1798 close to husum, harro harring was a dike reeve’s son who ventured out into the world to
learn to paint. in 1821, he travelled to greece to fight for greece’s independence against the turks. After
the november insurrection of 1830 in Warsaw, he wrote a revealing account of Poland under russian rule,
which became an instant best-seller, despite being immediately banned. his songs were sung at hambach
castle in 1832. harring was a member of “Young europe”, a secret society that, in 1834, under the leadership
of giuseppe Mazzini called for a united europe without borders and he was persecuted by Metternich’s
agents. he fled to england, heligoland and Brazil, met edgar Allen Poe and Margaret Fuller in new York and,
in 1848, tried in vain to awaken the Frisians to fight for freedom. harring, the novelist and poet, was arrested
for his actions over twenty times and was well-known as a fierce rebel. however, he ran aground just like
the revolution itself. harring was a visionary yet he died, poor and forgotten, by his own hand in 1870.
this gripping biography condenses harring’s life story into a master narrative of the tumultuous german

numerous publications have been written regarding Block 10. But Lang adds another dimension by fol-
lowing some of the young women, all Jewish, from their arrival at the ramp where they were chosen to
become the subjects of sterilization experiments. Most of them had been deported from greece, Belgi-
um, the netherlands and France. the women were brought to a building which looked somewhat like a
hospital though they were young and healthy. their confusion soon turned to despair and terror as they
realized that they were there to be tortured by brutal, inhumane procedures.
Lang also paints a moral portrait of the nurses and prisoner-doctors in Block 10, using survivors‘ testi-
monies. Most of the nurses had no medical training. some would even hit the women who screamed
with pain. the exact number of women who were experimented on in Block 10 remains unknown. it is
probably around 800. similarly, the number of deaths due to the experiments carried out there cannot
be determined. Many survivors who had been experimented on were later unable to have children.
claude romney Lewin (University calgary): „A very important piece of research which deals with a
particularly dark and revolting aspect of the Auschwitz history. Moreover, in light of the recent apology
issued by the german Medical Association (Bundesärztekammer) to the victims of the crimes perpetra-
ted by nazi doctors as well as to their families, the book deserves to be widely read.“

Content
german anatomical institutes always had problems obtaining sufficient cadavers for research and training.
in the ns period, universities could count on “extraordinary opportunities for cadaver delivery”. Mostly tacit-
ly, many bodies were those of victims of ns crimes. scientists exploited the exceptional political situation to
systematically supplement their institutional collections. their endeavors to fill the “lamentable gaps” took
on truly bizarre forms. in Austria, Jewish cemeteries were plundered for racial-political expansion of anato-
mical collections. A change in paradigm followed: intentional murder for the benefit of ns-oriented science.
in December 1942, anatomists discussed plans for “material acquisition”. August hirt, director of the anato-
mical institute at the reichsuniversität strasbourg, was to develop guidelines under the name „Ahnenerbe“.
the university was considered a center of excellence for nazi ideology. the anthropologists Bruno Beger
and hans Fleischhacker selected 86 Jewish prisoners in Auschwitz in June 1943 and deported them to the
concentration camp at struthof near natzweiler, where they were murdered. the bodies were delivered to
the anatomy department in strasbourg for preparation and used as anatomical specimens. For modern sci-
entists, the elucidation of these criminal acts is not exhausted in the search for an answer to the questions
of perpetrator, place, modus operandi or motive.

“Did you know that your body loves boring?” With sentences like this, the Munich general practitioner
Dr. Markus Baumgartner explains to his patients that they should not be surprised when their bodies
begin to show negative symptoms, considering that we subject them to constant stress, irregular slee-
ping and eating routines, and inadequate relaxation. this sentence is typical for the empathic doctor,
who, more than anything, wants his patients to understand why their bodies act up when they lose their
body-soul-mind equilibrium. this trained doctor describes his transformation from a surgeon to a gene-
ral practitioner and doctor for acupuncture: “From saul to Paul.”
this is not a textbook focused on any specific healing approach, even though Dr. Baumgartner frequent-
ly references traditional chinese medicine and yoga principles. he uses these as an easily comprehen-
sible, explanatory model. the text concentrates much more on his day-to-day practice, and his patients’
ordinary and not-so-ordinary symptoms and concerns. these true stories, linked to his personal insights
into a doctor’s thought process, will help readers to understand that what is often required is the utiliza-
tion of healthy – in the truest sense of the word – common sense.

not everyone gets a shot at being a chancellor candidate – a person is shaped for that position. this is
also the case for Martin schulz. it is his extremely diverse strengths that have transformed schulz into
the political strategist whom sPD members and an increasing number of voters believe can defeat
Angela Merkel. in order to objectively analyze these strengths, journalist Martin häusler engaged Martin
schulz in extensive conversations, interviewed colleagues of his from various professional and personal
spheres, and placed his findings under the proverbial microscope.
how did schulz become so power conscious? What sparked his political creative drive? What is the sour-
ce of his verbal brilliance? Who set his foundational values? Which experiences shaped the upbringing of
the youngest of five siblings, and from what did he draw the unconditional discipline that allowed him
to defeat his alcoholism? What inspired him to become such a devoted advocate for europe? And would
all of this be enough to turn him into a good chancellor for the entire german nation? these questions
can only be answered by taking a close look at his years growing up in the Aachen border area, the vola-
tile history of the schulz family, and the memories of his friends, supporters and critics.

A call for dedication
Moving and honest, unsparing and poetic

Does it exist, the love that changes everything?
“Most of us hope that we can also find real love, that the passion that changes everything, is waiting
out there somewhere. But we are the only one who can achieve change. only when we grow to be that
person, whom we ourselves can love and who ‚satisfies‘ us, real love will find us in the form of another
human being.“
nothing is more written about than the immeasurable wonder of love – and nothing hurts us more than
when a relationship, that began so full of hope, falls apart.
Janice Jakait knows only too well, how it feels: the constant looking and dating, toxic relationships and
deepest loneliness, soaring infatuation and complete desperation. But then a sense and a chance reveal
themselves in all the wrong paths, crises and disappointments, and that’s when she begins to grow to
be the person who she herself would like to meet. she says goodbye to false expectations and ideas
about love, she faces up to her deep desires and fears, learns to say ‚no‘ to casual relationships and to
complete intellectualising. And then love suddenly stands before her ...

Latest research verifies that exceptional intuition, near-death experiences or states of enlightenment
have a clear biological basis. in the process particular body substances in the pineal gland are released –
exactly at that point in the body which the old ‚wisdom traditions‘ and so-called secret societies call the
‚third eye‘.
Ulrich Warnke, well-known interdisciplinary scientist and bestselling author, shows how it is possible to
bring about the opening of the third eye and how one can deliberately practise to access the resulting
information. the book describes in detail all aspects of the previously secret method, which in practice
can be applied by anybody. With the help of sound sequences on the enclosed cD, activation of the
