communicate verbally and through written expression, with developed skills in research, synthesis, and analysis. Students will be required to read closely, write extensively and often, and think deeply, considering varied perspectives and contexts.

GOALS

• The course teaches and requires students to write in several forms: expository, analytical, argumentative, narrative, and imaginative, as well as complete short, sustained, and intensive research activities and projects. Students will gain skills to be able to coherently and cleanly write about a variety of subjects.

• The course requires writing that proceeds through several drafts or stages, as well as those that have informal or creative contexts. Writing assignments are designed to help students become increasingly aware of themselves as writers and of the techniques employed by the writers they read.

• The course requires fiction and nonfiction readings. The readings are selected to give students opportunities to identify an explain an author’s use of rhetorical or literary strategies and techniques.

• The course teaches students to analyze how visual and multimedia images both relate to written texts and serve as alternative forms of texts themselves.

• The course teaches research skills, particularly the ability to evaluate, use, and cite primary and secondary source material, as well as appropriately integrate source material into original writing,

• Students will develop the habits and skills necessary to think, read, write, and speak critically and authoritatively,

Classroom Expectations The quality of work you produce in this classroom is a direct reflection of your own work ethic and dedication to the craft of reading and writing. Failure to be prepared with readings, assignments, materials, or original thought will translate into poorer grades. Grading and Classroom Policies

GRADING

The grading scale specified in the Student Handbook will be followed. English X is a year-long course and required for graduation. Final grades will be calculated using quarter grades,

midterm, and final exams. The midterm and final each account for 10% of the overall course grade, and each nine-week period grade accounts for 20% of the total average. There are no weighted grades in this course. All assignments, essays, tests, and other graded projects will be averaged together. Several times during the course students will be given formative assessments to determine skill development. These will be “graded” but will not affect a student’s overall average for the course. These assessments should be taken very seriously, as they help the teacher, student, parents, and administrators recognize any needed interventions in learning.

POLICIES Plagiarism, copying, or cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. Rules and expectations outlined in the Student Handbook will be followed. Classroom expectations are visibly posted.

Class agendas are updated weekly at FergusonEnglish.PBWorks.com. It is the students’ responsibility to visit the site and find out what was missed in the event of an absence. Further questions will be answered after a student has accomplished this first step. If an assignment has a pre-determined due date, such as a multi-day project, it is still due on that date regardless of absence.

I am understanding that life happens and sometimes people fall behind. As seniors, you should make every attempt to complete all readings and turn in all assignments on their assigned due date. If you must turn an assignment in late, you will be penalized 10% for the first day late, and and additional 10% each subsequent day, unless you discuss the issue with me before the date due and alternate arrangements can be made. Be responsible and be organized! Homework assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. In accordance with school policy, students who are absent the day of an assignment have two days after their return to complete any missing work. Homework and daily assignments can be found on the “While You Were Out” page of my class website. Students who are absent on the day of an in-class quiz, test, or writing assignment have one week from the date of return to schedule time during study hall, class time, or before or after school to make up the missed assessment.

MATERIALS

• An unshakable work ethic: your success in this course is entirely dependent on you. Grades are earned and it is my goal that everyone succeeds. However, you must take responsibility for your own learning.

• Chromebook: it is required that you bring and use your school-issued or otherwise approved connected device daily, charged, and functioning. You will not be granted unlimited passes to retrieve it from your locker.

• Writing utensils, paper, etc: Though much of your work will be completed digitally, there is nothing quite like putting pen to paper. Thus, you will occasionally be asked to write your thoughts or responses. It is best to be prepared for such an occasion. You will often be given paper handouts that you will be asked to refer to later on; a folder or binder is useful.

• Utilize your Google suite of tools to ensure organization. Keep scored, commented, and graded hardcopies of your major writing assignments.

Dear Parents and Guardians: It is my great pleasure to have the opportunity to teach and guide your English X student this

school year as he or she develops as a close reader, a writer with a strong command of language, and a thoughtful citizen of the world. While it is my job to instruct, encourage, and guide your student, support at home will be a critical benefit to your child. Please understand that all course readings are specifically chosen to teach certain concepts and learning targets, but if you ever have concerns about something your child has been assigned to read, I am more than willing to discuss the text with you or provide an alternative. All daily and sustained assignments can be accessed through the Columbiana High School Teacher pages. Class information is updated regularly. You may contact me through email or by phone at (330)482-3818. Please sign, detach, and return the slip below by Tuesday, August 27, 2019.

Sincerely, Holly Ferguson
