Table of Contentschapter 1 v santiagoexplore chile’s cultural, political, and economic capital through the verses and stories of our literary guides, isabel allende and Pablo neruda. Our journey begins at the Plaza de armas where ines

suarez, heroine of allende’s Ines of My Soul, founded santiago de la nueva extremadura in 1541 with her lover, Pedro de Valdivia. The nearby Museum of Pre-columbian art offers visitors a comprehensive overview of the indigenous cultures that populated the americas before the europeans’ arrival, such as the fearless Mapuche indians who fought ines suarez, Pedro de Valdivia, and the spanish for their land and freedom. Our hotel, the Plaza san Francisco, is adjacent to the church of san Francisco, where the main altar holds the carving of the

Virgen del socorro brought to santiago by ines suarez. santiago’s city center also includes the cathedral, the central market, and the presidential palace, Palacio de la Moneda, where isabel allende’s uncle, President salvador allende, made his last stand against General Pinochet in the violent coup of september 11, 1973.

santiago’s main thoroughfares—avenida O’higgins and the rio Mapocho—bring us to cerro santa lucia and a mural honoring chile’s first nobel laureate poet, Gabriela Mistral. her works are renowned for their deep beauty and emotion, and the country honors Mistral in many ways, including her profile on the 500 peso note. across the rio Mapocho we experience the Bohemian neighborhood of Bellavista, home to cafes, bars, and la chascona (“messy-haired woman”), the house that Pablo neruda built for his wife, Matilde Urrutia. Further from the city center, explore the elegant homes and las Ursulinas, the school described in allende’s House of Spirits.

chapter 2 v ValparaisoThis boisterous, colorful Pacific seaport is often likened to the san Francisco Bay area. nestled among chaotic hills, its similar geography earned it the nickname Pancho, or “little san Francisco,” by sailors in the

mid-19th century. During california’s gold rush, Valparaiso was an important supply and transit point for chileans and europeans heading to california. Follow in the footsteps of eliza sommers, the central character of allende’s Daughter of Fortune, as we visit the neighborhood of cerro alegre and learn about British influence on Valparaiso’s history and architecture. like san Francisco, Valparaiso was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 1906, but it rose from the ashes to become one of latin america’s most unique cities and recently earned the designation of a UnescO World heritage site. enjoy time at Pablo neruda’s Valparaiso home, la sebastiana, with its maritime motifs, playful layout, and panoramic views of the city, and meet with members of the Pablo neruda Foundation, dedicated to preserving neruda’s memory.

chapter 3 v the countrysiDe Travel south of Valparaiso to neruda’s third home and final resting place, isla negra, a peaceful vantage point overlooking the Pacific. in the fertile casablanca Valley, chile’s love affair with wine comes to life at the Kingston Family Vineyards. carl Kingston first came

to chile from Michigan in the early 1900s as a prospector for copper and gold. The Kingstons settled in the casablanca Valley in the 1920s and now pioneer the cultivation of chilean Pinot noir and syrah wines under the guidance of napa Valley winemaker Byron Kosuge. enjoy learning about the family’s colorful history and chile’s award-winning wine industry.
