simile
compares two things using the words “like” or “as.”
The baby was like in octopus in the store, grabbing everything he could get his hands on.
metaphor
compares two things without using “like” or “as.” A metaphor calls one thing something else.
Jimmy’s pimple was a huge mountain on his face.
personificationgiving human traits to non-human things.
The pen jumped out of his hand.
hyperboleextreme or exaggerated language. I talked to Shanaynae on the
phone for forever yesterday.
Idiom
common sayings to a particular language that don’t make sense to people who aren’t from that certain place.
You are the apple of my eye.
