Why is litter a big problem for fish…

The plastic products outnumber the billions of plankton in the sea 6:1

Majority of marine debris comes from fishing nets

Out of 672 fish caught during a 2008 Pacific Gyre voyage, Algalita researchers found that 35% had ingested plastic pieces

100,000 marine animals are killed each year by plastic. It impacts 267 marine species worldwide (47% of total)

One of the most dangerous type of litter is scrap metal. Scrap metal kills millions of fish

Page 3: Littering, a fishy situation

The high point of nuclear waste dumping was in 1954 and 1962, but this nuclear waste only accounts for 1% of the total nuclear waste that has been dumped in the ocean

Let’s think of solutions… Scrap metal comes from boats that break down, or are too

old. We can make inflatable bags that make sure that toxic scraps don’t fall and the boat doesn’t sink

We can recycle old fishing nets, to make reusable plastic items, such as bags, toys, etc.

People can Adopt a Beach, it is like Adopt a Highway. People who adopt a beach, have volunteered to make sure the beach is clean and unpolluted.

We also made a sign to spread the word about our idea and educate people about this pollution.

Biodegradable waste is organic matter that comes from landfills, and burning of it produces harmful gases in the environment. We could compost this waste instead, and generate electricity. This would be a way to make organic

fuel, and solve the problem.

So, as you see, our team found some solutions to help the fish of the sea.

Garbage cleanup arrayThe Garbage cleanup array is invented by Boyan Slat, it

harnesses the power of the oceans currents in a V shaped array to concentrate trapped garbage and the plastic. The trapped plastic will be collected by service ships. It has specialized screen so that the sea life can pass under it with ocean currents. Our idea is to adopt the same method for smaller water bodies.

Energy Neutral -It uses the power of the ocean currents instead of other external sources of power.

Efficient- The array’s screens trap 99% of plastic in the water areas it is in

Customizable -Screen can be changed to trap different sizes of particles from very little, microscopic particles to actual garbage bags.

Autonomous- There are barely any moving parts, making the system almost completely automated. A radio signal is all that is needed to alert land that the array is full.

Cost effective – this solution is much cheaper than what we are using right now.

Specialized screens and the floating array are completely passive to marine life.

Ocean currents moving the arrays and moving the plastic into the array.

V shape array is very efficient at trapping plastic and concentrating it to the center.
