Letter From Little J As I sit here reviewing all of my posts from the past year, I can’t believe that I

finally get to celebrate Little J turning 1. A year ago, I set out to begin blogging, hoping that anyone who came across Little J would find my fashion, food, and fitness filled life somewhat entertaining. I would never have imagined the response that I have received and am super excited for what is to come - but, cheers to Little J reaching it’s first milestone, am I right?

A huge thank you to all of my readers and fans for your loyal support throughout this past year. Little J would not exist without the incredible following that it has accumulated. I am excited to announce my first online issue of Little J, which is a compilation of some of my favorite content that has appeared on my blog thus far - a celebration of Little J turning 1, and a little “re-cap” for all of you. I have been working on this project for awhile now, and can’t wait for you to flip through the pages, find inspiration, and work up an appetite with some yummy recipes.

Cheers to this new endeavor and keep reading, sending feedback, and spreading the Little J love! Xx

July 21. One year has already flown by and I can’t believe it. A little confession: I entered this

world a year ago on a complete whim, wanting to share all the things I love – fashion, food, and fitness related – with whomever was willing to read.

Despite my original expectations, I have received an incredible response – one beyond belief and one that continues to grow everyday.

For those of you who have followed me since day one and for those of you who are new readers, I love you all and thank you so much for your support, words of

encouragement, and devotion to my site.

I also have Teen Vogue to thank for recognizing me as a part of their Fashion Click program, a network that has not only pushed me to improve the quality of my content,

but one that has also lead me to other amazing opportunities.

This year has been a great one – filled with mounds cakes, ab workouts, lots of shopping, and fun interviews with people like Jennifer Bandier, Dylan Lauren, and

Jennifer Miller - and I can assure you there is much more to come.

I want you all to know that I do this not only because I love it, but because of you all. The amazing letters I have received with your enthusiasm and the kind words that many of you have extended have served as the fuel behind Little J, and are much

appreciated.

One year down, and many, many more ahead of us. I am extremely excited about the future of Little J and hope that all of you keep reading, keep reaching out, and keep

sharing. Thank you times a million.

Cheers to Little J turning 1!

Get this: it’s 85+ degrees out and

your friends just texted you to meet them at the beach in less than 20. You’ve basically just rolled out of

bed and realize that you could use a little R&R. Uh-oh. You’ve gotta get gorgeous hastily and throw your beach must-haves in your bag.

That’s when you thank your NARSissistic behavior for loading

up on all of this summers’ easy, throw-in-your-bag products when you paid a visit to their store a few

days ago.

Yes, it’s okay to admit that you secretly knew your NARS splurge

would come in handy someday ;)

Started in 1994 by make-up artist and

photographer François Nars, NARS is a skincare and cosmetic company that prizes itself on multi-use beauty products and minimalist packaging.

It is a “makeup brand that is modern and audacious, a brand known for its

trend-setting products – products that are

iconic and chic” says Jaime Banach, a NARS Makeup Artist at the Madison

Avenue store.

Not to mention, all of the products have quirky names, giving each lipstick, bronzer, etc. a sense of

uniqueness.

The founder himself says, “When I created NARS I was either going to

name (the products) with numbers or give them intelligent names. I wanted to the products character and identity.

The names make you dream and transport you to another place – gives

the colors a fun twist!”

In a nutshell, Mr. Nars’ philosophy on skin is to reflect light and look

natural, as he always says, “Don’t cover the complexion, enhance it!”

During my session with NARS makeup artist Jaime Banach (Madison

Avenue Boutique) I got the 411 on everything a girl needs this summer to create a natural, long-lasting look

on the go.

The finished product? A glowing look that takes less than 15 minutes, and one you can throw in your back to

accompany you on your beach-day or shopping excursion. So, that problem you had this morning? Totally solved!!

Time to hit the beach or lounge by the pool with a radiant glow.

SPF 30 Primer for the girls

who want protection without foundation // The Benefits?

Think of the primer as the base for all of your make-up. It will

help everything else stick, enhance your bronzer, etc. and

promote longevity.

Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer to apply directly over

the primer, also with SPF 30 protection, and easy to apply on the

face with your fingers

Radiant Concealer to

apply underneath the eyes, and give yourself an extra

glow

Frivolous Velvet Lip Pencil which you an use like

chap stick to moisten your lips. // Artist Tip: “The lip pencil adds a beautiful nude color packed with moisture to the lips,

the latter of which is essential for hot, summer days.”

Over it, apply a lip-gloss for a little sparkle – I love the color “Greek Holiday” because of its sheer and natural look.

The Mascara which you

should apply using the “Shake & Take” – doing this, there’s no

need to go through the trouble of applying eyeliner. Another tip: while the mascara on your top lashes is still wet, blink a few

times and your bottom lashes will pick up some of that color.

Himalia Dual-Intensity Eye

Shadow to dab onto

your eyelids for a little touch of sparkle. Apply a little in the inside corners of your eyes for something

extra. // Artist Tip: “The Himalia Dual-Intensity Eye

Shadow is a great way to add a pop of gold to the lids; tapping Himalia on with a finger can easily

transition a look meant for the day at the beach to one that is perfect for dinner

with friends.”

The Orgasm Multiple that is everything in one –

blush and lipstick // Artist Tip: “The orgasm multiple is one

that can be used to add instant color to skin without over-

thinking. Add it to the apples of the cheeks to create a soft,

glow-y look.”

So, what are the essent ia l s?

Welcome to my CribA Little J Room Tour

Page 19: Little J: Celebrating One Year

19

There is no question that every girl

has imagined what her dream room

would look like at some point in her life - at least I have. I remember drawing sketch after sketch of what I thought was my ideal room, jam packing everything I could possibly think of me needing onto an 11x14 sheet of paper. I was picturing a loft, lots of furry bean bags, a huge bed, TV lounge area….yeah….that didn’t really fly with my parents.

Although my early “room-dreams” did not come true, I always loved playing around with furniture and would constantly re-arranging the layout of my Nashville room, which consisted of the same furniture for 13 years until I

convinced my mom to help me modernize a little bit.

One month the bed would be against

the wall, and the next it would be in

the middle of my room, sometimes I would put down a rug, and other times I just wanted to feel my bare feet against the hard-wood floors.

It wasn’t until I moved to New York three years ago that my concept of a dream room almost completely came true. Let’s just say that I had a blank slate to create anything that I wanted - within a few limitations, of course.

Here’s what I came up with:

With furniture from Jonathan Adler, I created a girly, yet comfy space to sleep, breathe, and study in. As for the color scheme, I chose orange and white with brown accents - colors you might not typically pair together; however, I wanted to mix it up and be original.

Surrounding my brown, velvety-feeling bed are orange stools, brown and white printed curtains, and white-lacquered side tables - simple, clean, and suuupppper cozy.

(continued on the next page)

Page 20: Little J: Celebrating One Year

20

To spice it up, I spray painted“love” above my bed and threw some stick-on Keith Haring decals on my wall.

Page 21: Little J: Celebrating One Year

The finished product: an inviting, light-filled space

that I can’t help but wanting to spend so much time in. I’m telling you, the more you like the layout and

design of your room, the more time you will want to

spend lounging in it.

When in Doubt, Wear Some ArtUnni by Sarah

A New York native who has always had a strong passion for hands on creation, Sarah Coleman, has tapped into a new niche – designing a line of crop tops that

she calls Unni by Sarah (a.k.a. “wearable art”).

Before launching her line of unique crop tops, Sarah spent three years as a designer for architect Peter Marino, where she made connections with various artists and gained lots of design experience. Not to mention, where she ultimately became inspired to

pursue her passion for creating, painting, and designing wearable art.

Using the connections that she formed from her previous job, Sarah sources her fabrics from both local and international artisans, weavers, and textile designers.

Inspired by artists Mattise, Miro, Giacometti, and Picasso, Sarah’s designs are carefully transformed into wearable art. After priming, painting, and treating a

canvas panel that later becomes the focal point of the shirt, she fabricates the top as a frame for the artwork. She says, “I want to make art wearable – the clothing and body

act as a frame for the painting.”

Page 25: Little J: Celebrating One Year

25

After only a few months of trying to integrate art and design into fashion, Sarah’s crop-tops are getting a lot of

attention – not to mention, she has big plans (and some surprises) for her fall/

winter collection that will be coming out soon. Her entrepreneurial spirit and

creative mind have allowed her to place a strong grasp on her brand’s image, and so far, proved to be leading her in the right

direction. Her advice in creating a business:

“Be self aware, and don’t be hard on yourself. Take one day at a time. Maintain good intentions and focus on what it is you are

doing. Set a goal and don’t stop, even when you surpass it –

another one will be waiting. Keep on creating, and be confident in your ideas and in your brand.”

So, where can you get your hands on some of these art-inspired crop-tops? You can purchase these made-to-order shirts

on her website (unnibysarah.com) or from Moda Operandi’s Sports Illustrated,

curated trunk show online.

When in doubt, wear some art :)

When summer rolls around, you know what that means: it’s shorts weather.

But, disclaimer: I’m not talking about jean cut offs that are so short your butt hangs out, because that is just not a good look. However, I’m talking about printed shorts

that have a little “flow” to them - ones you can dress up at night or dress down during the day.

So, to kick off this season of shorts-wearing weather, I created a look with a simple color scheme: black with a splash of green. I paired a cute pair of Zara shorts with a

silk top, slip-ons, and cross-body bag - an outfit that I would call a "palm-printed paradise."

PALM-PRINTED PARADISE

The Look: Zara palm-printed shorts, Zara silk top, Prada pointed slip-on, vintage Chanel bag

AS G(REY)OOD ! ! ! AS IT GETS

Page 29: Little J: Celebrating One Year

29

It’s safe to say that we are now knee-deep in spring (even though it doesn’t really feel like it) not to

mention, all on the home stretch. In less than a month, we will all be escaping to various paradises,

strapping on those bikinis, and basking in the sun.

But, hey, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

My typical springtime days consist of long, breezy runs through the park, “lawning,” and iced coffee -

enough said. However, I can’t help but seek out streets in the city lined with trees in full-bloom - and when I do, I can’t help but stop and snap

a few pics.

For this look, I went casual yet chic - the kinda outfit you can wear with booties during the day and dress up with heels at night. Not to mention, the weather is finally warm enough

to wear dresses/skirts during the day without getting cold - so we might as well take advantage, am I right?

Page 30: Little J: Celebrating One Year

30

GRAFFITI - GOERThe location? The Harlem Graffiti Hall of Fame: a mish-mosh of NYC influenced images created by local graffiti artists, whose vibrant colors nearly explode off the wall. And the best

part? This line of color-filled walls sits right in the middle of a school playground. To me, a melting pot of local artistic influence with regular NYC inhabitants.

For the longest time, I have been super interested in street art, and every time I travel to a new city, I am intrigued to seek out these incredible creations. After visiting the Graffiti Hall of

Fame, one of many graffiti locations in NYC, i have to say, this spot goes on my list for one of the best graffiti locations. However, Miami’s Winwood Walls and the Bowery murals are still at

the top of my list.

Page 31: Little J: Celebrating One Year

31

With a little graffiti-inspo in mind, I put a more sophisticated spin on a location that normally brings about stereotypical thoughts of “grunge” and “hip-hop.” Here, street style

meets chic: black leather softened by light brown fur.

Not quite your typical "graffiti goer" but a modern take on a laid-back look.

Despite misconceptions, a little spray paint and a blank wall can go a long way - if done right. To me, graffiti is an inspirational source and a look into the minds of local

imaginations in a particular location.

To sum it up: Little J is definitely a graffiti-goer.

Page 32: Little J: Celebrating One Year

32FLASH TATTED.

Page 33: Little J: Celebrating One Year

33

Disclaimer: I would not consider myself a tattoo advocate at all.

But, when I came across these metallic, jewelry inspired temporary ones, I couldn’t help but try them out - and yes, I am loving’ them.

Flash Tattoos have become this summer’s craze - I mean, everyone has started wearing them. Easy to apply and only lasting about six days, the metallic designs are perfect for the pool, beach, festivals, and parties. Not to mention, they mix in great

with all of your (real) jewelry.

With nine different unique sets available, you can mix-and-match designs and play around with creating fun bracelets, rings, and necklaces. When it comes to flash-tats

there are endless possibilities - so, why not try them all?

How To Apply? Cut out the design that you want as close to the edge as possible. Test out the length/size/etc. on the area that you want to put it. Peel off the

plastic layer and ask a friend to help you position the tattoo onto your

skin face down.

Hold a wet rag over the tattoo for 30 seconds and then peel off the

paper side of the tattoo.

Congratulations, you have been flash-tatted!

Cooking Avec Eric and tips on how to properly follow a cookbook

FOOD

37

Page 38: Little J: Celebrating One Year

38

I am not typically your follow a recipe word for word kind of girl, but when you come across a cookbook written by one of the world’s best chefs, you can’t help but want to

flip through all the pages, and even attempt to mimic his/her culinary cuisines.

The Book? Avec Eric, written by famous chef, Eric Ripert, who has four stars

in the New York Times, is the chef and co-owner of Le Bernardin, and has been a judge on Food Network’s Top Chef. Now, that’s some culinary expertise right there.

For a summer lunch, I flipped through Eric’s book for inspiration. After going through it cover to cover, I finally had a menu planned:

Eric’s Caribbean Fried Rice and Green Papaya Salad (which I ended up serving with my own curried chicken and spinach salads) - so good, you just wait.

Before we start, I’m gunna let you in on a few rules that I live by when following a recipe in a cookbook:

One: don’t be scared to put your own spin on things - have fun with flavors.

Two: don’t be a freak about measuring everything out with cups & spoons; rather, focus on the taste of your dish

Three: don’t be afraid to get your cookbook dirty - we’re hardcore chefs, right?

Okay, let’s get cooking.

InstructionsRinse and drain the basmati rice and place in a small saucepan with 2 1/2 cups water and a pinch of salt. Over high heat, bring the rice to a bowl and then lower the heat to medium and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. After most of the water has been absorbed place a tight fitting lid on the pan, remove from the heat, and let it sit for another 10 minutes. Spread the rice out on a sheet pan and cool. Heat the olive oil in a large nonstick pan over high heat and then add in the scallions, jalapeño, and ginger. Add in 2 1/2 cups of the chilled cooked rice, apple, banana, mango, raisins, and almonds. Season with cayenne, salt, and pepper.

Two easy recipes that make for a fab lunch, not to mention, leave you feeling accomplished for conquering this master chefs’ cuisine.

Power Salads

Page 43: Little J: Celebrating One Year

43

I don’t know about you, but salads are probably my favorite food.

Now, before you’re quick to judge me for constantly craving a huge bowl of greens, just hear me out. Here are the top five reasons why salads are amazing, not to

mention easy to make, nutrient filled, and super yummy.

1 // Put anything on them. Literally, that is the beauty of a huge bowl of lettuce - you

can create flavor combinations like no other. My faves: Veggie chop chop, Chinese chicken, or Strawberry fields.

2 // They’re colorful. I mean, who doesn’t want to eat something that just looks

really pretty?

3 // They’re super healthy. Now, it is true that you have to be careful what toppings

you chose, but for the most part you’re pretty safe in terms of health factors when it comes to making a salad.

4 // They’re the perfect runners’ fuel. Essentially, I live on the power salad - before a

run, after a run, or even for dinner. Mixing together a a little fruit, some veggies, and some protein all in one meal gives me plenty of energy to push through a hard

workout.

5 // They’re really fun to arrange. Now, here’s where you might judge me because of

this slight confession: I am secretly obsessed with food presentation. At restaurants, I hate messing up the way a chef carefully places his/her dishes on the platter and at home I love pretending I am actually the chef and arranging “pretty” salads. Hey,

everyone has a secret obsession right?

Page 44: Little J: Celebrating One Year

44

So, there you go. You now understand why I am a power-salad lover and see that I am not ashamed to admit to my true love for greens. While you may not

be convinced, join me on a little journey through my recent salad experiences - so yummy :)

A final tip: On almost any salad, this dressing works perfectly. Make a container of it to keep in your fridge so that you have it ready when you

embark on your salad-making endeavors.

Dijon-Vinaigrette

In a container, mix equal parts apple cider vinegar & olive oil. For a punch, add in dijon mustard - tablespoon at a time - and lemon juice. Season with salt & pepper, shake until well mixed and pour dressing over salad (or keep in the

fridge for up to 5 days).

People, I’m telling you, it’s all about the #powersalads.

Page 45: Little J: Celebrating One Year

45

Page 46: Little J: Celebrating One Year

46

Strawberry Smoothie

Page 47: Little J: Celebrating One Year

47

I don’t know about you, but after I finish a workout or long run, I am never in the mood to eat. However, it is best to have a "post-workout" snack within the hour that you finish, because not only is your metabolism revved up, but also because a replenishment snack will aid in recovery.

Not to mention, during the summer, why not kick off a fun-filled day of beachin’’ with a protein smoothie that will keep you fueled for a full days’ worth of activity?

Mhm. You want it.

Ingredients1 banana4 strawberries1/2 cup coconut milk1 scoop soy protein powder1 1/2 - 2 cups ice

InstructionsBlend together banana, strawberries, coconut milk, and protein powder on high until smooth.Gradually add in ice and blend until smoothie gets thick enough to your liking.

Creamy Tomato Quinoa Pasta

Page 49: Little J: Celebrating One Year

49

It’s 6:00 pm and I’m sitting at my desk sending out emails and finishing up

last minute writing when everyone in my house is starting to leave for their night activities. I debate whether or not I should motivate myself to

actually get up and get out of the house, and while I normally can do this, sometimes, I let my home-cooked pasta craving get the best of me.

So this is what happens when I am left at home alone on a Thursday night:

I whip up a big dish of Quinoa Spaghetti with a Creamy Tomato Sauce & eat.

Like, date-night much? (With a nice bowl of pasta, that is) And so easy!

Page 50: Little J: Celebrating One Year

50

Instructions Fill your pasta pan 3/4 way up with water and get it boiling. While you are waiting, start the sauce.

First, sauté onions in a pan with olive oil and garlic until browned. Once the onions are done, pour in crushed tomato sauce and heavy cream. Throw in the basil, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder and salt, and continue to allow the sauce to simmer on medium heat.

When water comes to a boil, pour in the pasta and cook according to the package’s instructions. Once cooked, ladle one scoop of the pasta water into your serving bowl. Then, pour off the pasta noodles into a colander and place into serving bowl.

Ingredients1 can crushed tomatoes

1/2 cup heavy cream2 cloves of garlic peeled & minced

1/2 white onion sliced thin & chunky1 handful of basil juliennedHandful of fresh mozzarella

Teaspoon olive oilTeaspoon salt

Teaspoon garlic powder1 package of quinoa spaghetti

#WorkOutWithLittleJFor most people during the summer, tanning often (or always) trumps spending hours in the gym - and, hey, I don’t blame you for wanting to catch some rays.

However, during the warm weather months of June, July, and August, there is commonly a pressure floating around for us to look our bests on the beach, and many of us become concerned with achieving a “bikini bod.” Now I know what you’re thinking…exercising…totally a waste of time. But, I’m going to let you in

on a little secret: working out doesn’t have to take up your entire day.

So, here’s my version of a 15-minute workout that is semi-adapted from my latest fitness obsession: NTC {a.k.a. the Nike Training Club App} This app is my actual savior as it’s packed with 15-45 workouts that are targeted at: getting you

LEAN, getting you TONED, and getting you FOCUSED.

For this workout all you need is a mat, two 5 lb. weights, some loud music and a bottle of water (stay hydrated!)

You ready? Lets go.

Page 54: Little J: Celebrating One Year

54

Alternating Backwards Lunge (1 min.) | while holding 5 lb. weights,

alternate legs in a backwards lunge, being sure to not let your front knee pass over

your toe

Alternating Side Lunge (1 min.) | while holding 5 lb. weights,

alternate legs in a sideways lunge, being sure to keep your back flat and torso upright

Sideways Leg Lifts (1 min.) | laying flat on your side, lift your

top leg up into the air slowly and then bak down - keep your foot flexed and do for 30

seconds on each side

Plant (Front & Side) (1 min.) | keeping your back flat and head aligned, raise into a plank and hold for 1

minute - be careful to not stick your butt up in the air and tighten your core (for an extra

push, alternate raising legs in the air

Repeat the routine a total of three times.

So, that wasn’t that bad, right? 15 minutes later and 3 reps down and you’re already on your way to that toned body you’ve been dreaming of - and, hey, even if it was a push, the routine gets easier

everyday. You got this.

Let’s get toned, get lean, and get focused together. #WorkOutWithLittleJ

Bow Down to Bandier All of you are already aware of the fact that I am a

fitness-fanatic. But, what happens when fashion and fitness join together? It’s simple: I go crazy - which is exactly what happened when I discovered Bandier, a super-chic sportswear store that made its day beau in Southampton this summer.

After being frustrated by not having a place to shop that carried multi-brand fashionable fitness clothing, Jennifer Bandier decided to take matters into her own hands and tap into this niche on her own. But, here is the story on how her idea really developed:

“A couple of years ago, I broke my foot and was in cast for 5 months. After not being mobile I was dying to work out and the only activity I could do was walk…so, I started walking everyday, all day. However, I really wanted to look chic and sophisticated and wear workout clothing [at the same time]. I couldn’t find anything in New York that appealed to me, so I searched the internet and found amazing brands that were only really accessible online. I realized there wasn’t a physical store or me to buy the workout “athleisure” brands I wanted.”

Now let me just tell you, I know something good when I see it, and the first moment I stepped foot into this store, I knew that Bandier was going to be my newest obsession.

The loud music, fluorescent colored bags that I spotted out of the corner of my eyes, and modern aesthetic of the store lured me in within five seconds - I couldn’t wait to dive in.

Page 56: Little J: Celebrating One Year

56

My initial reaction to this fitness-wear paradise is exactly what Jennifer wanted to see when a

customer walked into Bandier’s doors. She says:

“When someone walks into Bandier, I want them to feel comfortable, confident, sexy, and excited about working out. I know that when I put on great looking fitness apparel, be it a legging from Michi or a sports bra from Phat Buddha, I immediately feel better about myself and more excited

to face the workout, or day, whichever it may be!”

Jen is totally right, no need to ditch your sense of style when you hit the gym, or classes like SoulCycle and KG Body (some of her faves), especially when you have a place like

Bandier to build a chic, workout wardrobe.

Besides being home to a collection of some of the best fitness brands in the world, Bandier is also filled with stylist headphones, speakers and other gym essentials that are the perfect

accompaniment to any workout.

Jen is always blasting some of the top songs on her playlist - She Knows (J.Cole), Turn Down for

What (DJ Snake), Hideaway (Kiesza), All About The Bass (Meghan Trainor) - throughout her store, letting her passion for fun music run wild. I mean, who knew that shopping for athletic-
