    Stop, Drop, and Roll!: Firefighters Visit StudentsOn Wednesday, October 17th, March Elementary School took part

    in Fire Safety activities. The Easton Firefighters visited with us for most

    of the day going over fire safety rules. Each grade level had apresentation where they learned when to call 911 and to have their name

    and address ready for the operator. They also learned what to do if theirclothes catch on fire. Students were then able to go outside for a

    demonstration of 2 of the citys fire trucks. The children were able to askquestions about the different types of equipment available and were ableto see how the different tools could be used in a real fire. At the end of

    the demonstration, the students were treated to a viewing of theextension ladder on the truck that could be used for reaching higher

    floors. To conclude the day, we had a fire drill to practice the safety

    measures we learned throughout the day. It was a memorable day for allof F.A. March! More pictures page 3 and online.

    Regular attendance in school is crucial to the successfuldelivery of instruction as well as to ensure continuity inlearning. While illness and unforeseen occurrence befall usall, taking preventative measures during high illness seasonshelps maintain consistent attendance. Also, try to schedule

    routine doctor appointments and dentist appointments forafter school, in-service days, or over school breaks. TheEASD calendar can be found via the EASD website withhardcopies available in the main office.

    There are five essential components for reading.

    Phonemic Awareness: The smallest parts of sounds heardin words. Children need to be able to hear and recognizethese sounds to later understand their relationship to words

    Phonics: The understanding of sounds, spelling, patterns,and their relationship to the printed word. Children need tobe able to use this understanding when confronted by an

    unknown word in order to apply decoding skills (soundingwords out).

    Vocabulary: Understanding and increasing the use of newwords in all contexts.

    Fluency: The ability to accurately read new text with aproper rate of speed and expression.

    Comprehension: The ability to interpret, understand andremember text.

    Fruity FacesIn October, students learned

    about the famous artistGiuseppe Arcimboldo, who

    made faces out of fruits,vegetables and other objects.

    These deceptive illusions werethe inspiration for each student

    to create a digital self-portrait.Using the "Faces iMake" Appfor the iPads, students

    selected items thatcomplemented their

    personalities to build their faceillusions. They learned how toplace, duplicate, scale, rotateand mirror the objects. They

    could make their facessymmetrical or asymmetrical.

    iPads at F.A. MarchFor the month of October, the districts elementary iPad Cart was at F.A.

    March. The cart contains 30 iPads with a variety of apps.

    " The students in Mrs. Maczkos fourth grade class have beenlearning about story structure. They read several stories andidentified the problem, rising action, climax, and resolution. Thestudents used this knowledge of story structure to write andanimate their own stories using the Toontastic app on the

    iPads.

    " The process began as the students explored the Toontasticapp. They previewed possible characters and settings,practiced creating original characters and settings, and evenrecorded a short practice cartoon. The students then spentseveral days planning and writing their stories. A graphicorganizer was used to help in the planning stage. Once theirstories were complete, the children used the iPads to bringthem to life!

    " The final step in the process was to present the finishedproduct. Each student presented their animated story to theentire class. They received feedback from their classmates aspeers created special awards for each of the stories. Thestudents really enjoyed the entire process, but especially likedseeing their classmates stories on the big screen complete withcharacter voices, evil villains, princes, and even some magicpotions!

    Guess the Dewey number:Animoto Videos

    iPads at F.A. MarchFor the month of October, the districts elementary iPad Cart was at F.A.

    March. The cart contains 30 iPads with a variety of apps.

    During Library, 3rd grade students createdAnimoto videos using the iPads about differentdewey 100s sections. Animoto is an online toolthat makes quick and simple videos usingpictures and music.

    Using the iPads, students took pictures ofbooks found in the their 100s category. Wediscussing framing the picture and using all thespace. They also learned how to rotate thepicture on the iPad and delete images.

    These images where added to Animoto andarranged by the students. Students also addedtext about topics found in their sections. Lastly

    students were able to choose the music. Thestudents did an AMAZING job!

    During 1st Grade Math, theteachers and Miss Kordekhad students practice Mathskills using Bubble Math!

    This year the districts TechnologyDepartment purchased a new app,Rocket Math ($0.99) . This

    application has been a smashing hit at F.A. March.Used by different grades and skills. There are a

    variety of missions such as multiplication, addition,money, time, fractions, counting, shapes, patternsand much more. Students strive to bet their last highscore of most correct answers." Second grade used the iPad to review odd andeven numbers with the rocket math app. It wasamazing to see how the students picked up quickly onwhich numbers were odd and which were even.

    Each day students watch adifferent video containing

    pictures from a story and ateachers voice reading. Theyhave to guess who is readingthe story. Some more easier

    then others. At the end of theday two students name aredrawn from the entries for

    $10 to the Book fair.

    March School is off to a good startusing First in Math Online Programin grades 2, 3, and 4. First In

    Math activities employ Deep Practice techniquesto rapidly increase computation, problem solving,

    critical thinking and essential math basics. Skillsthat may take months of regular practice can be

    mastered in a much shorter time using Deep Practicetechniques and the immediate feedback online learning canprovide. Children using FIM have shown dramatic increases

    in math scoresacross the board from the topstudents to the most math-challenged learners. Weare excited to see students' active engagement in theprogram again this year. Classrooms have alreadystarted earning weekly trophies for being the team ofthe week in their grade.

    The first $2.00 bookstore of 2012-2013school year was quite the success! Therewere 192 books purchased by students.

    After School ProgramKick Off

    The After School Program at March Elementary is off to agreat start! Students in grades 3 and 4 participate in the

    program every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Afterrefueling with a quick snack, the students are off to work.They meet in small groups of 5 to 6 students and focus onimproving both their reading and math skills.

    During the reading portion of the After School Program, thechildren are given the opportunity to practice and improvetheir fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Fact fluency,problem solving, and a review of the current skills beingtaught in the classroom are the focus during math time.

    The students really look forward to participating in theAfter School program as theylearn in a fun, relaxedatmosphere!

    because he learned a lot about it when hewas a little boy.

    1) Where school were you at before coming to F.A. March and whatdid you teach?

    Mrs. Maczko taught for 3 years at Shawnee Elementary and for10 years at Tracy Elementary.

    2) What is your favorite thing to teach and why?Mrs. Maczko likes teaching everything especially math becauseyou can incorporate a lot of hands on learning.

    3) If you could be any cartoon character who would you be? Please

    explain.Mrs. Maczko would be Phineas from Phineas and Ferb so shecould spend her days inventing cool stuff.

    4) What do you like best about being a March Little Leopard?Mrs. Maczko likes the wonderful teachers and amazingstudents.

    In second grade, Mrs. Rodrigues' classworked on oral reading fluency andexpression through reading a play andsinging a song. Students invited theirrelatives to watch them perform TheStrongest One, an American Indian taleretold by Joseph Bruchac, and the song

    "The Ants Go Marching In." The story isabout a little red ant that leaves her colonyto find the answer to the question "Who isthe strongest one of all?" After exploringnature looking for the answer, and returningto the colony, the little red ant realizes thatants can be the strongest ones in some

    ways, even being so small. The

    audience of about forty adults andchildren were delighted with theperformance and enthusiastically

    joined the song about busy, marching antsand the end of the performance. A video ofthe play was produced by a group ofstudents with Mrs. Rodrigues. Mrs.Rodrigues concludes, "We worked in ourreading skills, integrating Language Arts,Science, Art and Technology, but most of allwe learned that even if we are small, we canbe very strong if we work hard and give ourbest in what we do individually and as ateam."

    Kellyn Foundation Presents EatReal Food" As part of the Eat Real Food program, presentersEric Ruth and Dr. Meagan Grega, from the KellynFoundation, educated F. A. March School Third Gradersabout the importance of eating fresh foods. The studentswere able to identify many locations where they could

    access healthy foods, including growing it themselves. Inaddition to learningabout healthy foods,they were treated to amesclun salad mixwith sunflower seedsand dried cranberries.Many studentsgenuinely enjoyed thesalads, while others

    took thank you bites." The students learned that by eating healthy foodsgrown locally, there is both an economic and ecologicalbenefit to their community. Through the presentation, theylearned the concept of a carbon footprint. Third Gradewould like to thank the Kellyn Foundation for educating uson healthy choices in eating.

    The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program is in full swing. The children love tryingnew things. Some of the favorites this month were the white

    broccoli (cauliflower) as some of the kids called it, watermelon and the apples.Some items that the kids werent so sure of were the squash and Jicama sticks.

    It really is a joy watching the students experience these new tastes.

    !On October 1, 2012, wewere honored to welcomeback Lafayette CollegesAmerica Reads/AmericaCounts tutors to ourclassroom settings. Manyof the tutors provide ourstudents and staff withmany hours each week ofsupport with reading andmath skills in small groupswithin the classrooms.This Fall, March Schoolwill be working with twentyAmerica Reads students.This communitypartnership allows ourstudents to receive someextra support fromdedicated collegestudents on a daily basis.
