Little Wayang Kids
In the MOE Kindergartens, children conduct an investigation of a topic of their
interest through a WoW (Weeks of Wonder) Project. In MOE Kindergarten @
Blangah Rise, the children were interested to find out more about Chinese
Opera after listening to the story “The Little Wayang Kid”.
I Wonder…
The teacher shared her own experiences and got the children to talk about
what they know and want to find out about Chinese Opera.
I Find Out …
The children wanted to search for information online so the teacher showed
them how to use the kiddle search engine to find answers to their questions.
The children documented their findings by drawing and writing.
Detailed drawings based on observation of face masks
The children were inspired to learn more about Chinese Opera so the teacher
organised a visit to the Chinese Opera Institute at the Aliwal Arts Centre.
Finding out more about the costumes and headgear in Chinese Opera
Seeing first-hand the costumes and props in Chinese Opera
I Know …
The teacher and children talked about what they had learnt and planned what
they needed to do to put up a Chinese Opera performance.
Finally, performance day…everyone had a role to play as narrators, musicians
or actors.
As part of reflection, the children watched a video of their performance and
talked about what they had learnt and how they could improve on it.
