AcreageThe ranch’s 2,022 deeded acres transition from the creek bottom on the south

to rolling hills on the north and onto high timbered ridges running along the

western portion. The 20 acres of flood irrigation have been irrigated, but not by

the current owner. A water rights specialist could provide information regarding

the water rights.

LocationThe ranch is located along State Highway 434, about 3.5 miles northwest of the

small town of Wolf Creek. Helena, Montana is a 30-minute drive on Interstate

15 to the south, and Great Falls is a 50-minute drive on Interstate 15 to the

northeast.

ClimateThis part of Montana enjoys a mild climate with over 300 days with sunshine. July and August are the warmest months, with high temperatures averaging in the low 80s

and nighttime lows in the 50s. January is typically the coldest month with daily highs in the mid-30s. The Wolf Creek area gets snow October through March with Chinook

winds and sunshine clearing the open hillsides in preparation of the next snow occurrence. Most of the moisture falls as rain in May, June and early July.

Improvements

The modest home built in 1973 is currently used by the

caretakers and would make a great manager or guest

cabin. The house is about 2,000 sqft of living space.

The detached garage and nearby ranch outbuildings are

functional for livestock or could be repurposed for a

new owner’s needs.

Ranch Operation

The ranch has been operated by the current owners

as a summer grazing unit for a larger neighboring

ranch. Historically the ranch had been operated as a

small cow/calf outfit with hay grown on the property.

One will be pleasantly surprised with the great fishing that

Wolf Creek offers. Rainbows are the main target, but anglers

will also catch brown trout and brook trout. The average

size is approximately eight to ten inches, however there are

also significantly larger trout in the deeper pools.

Arguably the best fly fishing in Montana is found near the ranch on the stretch

of the Missouri River downstream from Holter Dam. This part of the river

is a “tailwater” and fishes like a giant spring creek. It is famed for the numbers and

size of trout and its prolific hatches. For those who love dry fly fishing the Missouri

is not to be missed. Anglers will find baetis and caddis in the spring, PMD’s, tricos

and hoppers in summer, fall fishing with blue winged olives and streamers, winter

midges and consistent nymphing all year long.

It would take years to learn all of the streams, lakes and ponds in the area. If an

angler likes variety, this is an ideal place. The obvious angler’s quarry are the rainbow,

brown, brook and cutthroat trout, and some might be surprised to find grayling, bull

trout, golden trout and even kokanee in area waters. The winter offers extraordinary

ice fishing at Holter Lake where perch and kokanee are abundant. Warm water fish

include largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, pike and perch.

Holter Lake Recreation Area lies a few miles south from the property. There one

will see many types of game including bighorn sheep and Rocky Mountain goats.

Fishing in Holter can be excellent for trout, walleye, and perch.

On July 19th, 1805, Lewis and Clark party passed

through this area on their way up the Missouri

and came to “The Gates of the Mountains” an incredibly

beautiful steep, narrow, river passage with 1000-foot cliff

walls on each side of the river. From the top end of the

Little Wolf Creek Ranch, the lower portion of The Gates

can be seen six miles to the southeast.

Meriwether Lewis cited Tower Rock in his journals. He

climbed the rock and was astounded by the thousands of

buffalo on the plains to the north and the spectacular mountain views to the south.

Long before Lewis and Clark made their legendary trip, Native Americans used the area and this property.

Local lore has it that vigilante/lawman/outlaw Henry Plumber and his sidekick “Big Nose George” hid out in

this stretch of the Missouri country while on the run from the law. Some believe that they may have stashed

some of the gold stolen from miners in the area.

History buffs will enjoy the Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center in Great Falls, the most comprehensive

museum detailing the Lewis and Clark Expedition. A short list of area museums and cultural activities include:

C.M. Russell Museum, Montana’s Cowboys Association Museum, Montana Historical Society Museum, Gibson

Square Museum of Art, Montana State Capital Grounds Ulm Pushkin, the Gates of the Mountains and Giant

Springs State Park.

This property offers opportunities for viewing or hunting blue and ruffed grouse, whitetail and mule deer, elk,

and the occasional moose and black bear. Drive almost any direction from the Little Wolf Creek Ranch, and

upland bird hunters will find opportunities to chase pheasants, Hungarian partridge, sharptailed grouse, as well as

blue and ruffed grouse in the area mountains. The well-known Montana bird areas of Choteau and Fairfield are less

than one hour to the north and Lewistown is an easy drive to the east.

Elk, deer, black bear, moose, bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain goats and mountain lions can all be found in the area

mountains and forest. These game animals require a specific tag from Montana FWP to harvest. One should start

applying and build up preference points for these tags early on. The Bob Marshall Wilderness and the Rocky Mountain Front are some of the nation’s best places to find

protected animals like grizzly bears, lynx, wolverines and wolves. This is a wild area with an incredibly diverse list of wildlife.
