Exploring The Word Parables provoke interpreta-tion. They make us wonder what Jesus was referring to and what he really meant. At

times, he is quite vague about the real meaning and his disci-ples are left wondering. Think for example of the parable of the Sower which Jesus must later explain (Mk 4: 13-20). At other times, like the instances we have in this gospel reading, Jesus is quite explicit: he tells his hearers that he is talking about the kingdom of God.

Even so, he must still explain his meaning to the disciples when he is alone with them. Unfortunately, Mark does not report for us what interpreta-

tion Jesus places on these parables

Dear Friends

Let’s look for the good things. Often we focus on what’s

gone wrong and on what is not working, but there are plenty

of things that are going well. It’s the same in family life, as it

is at the work place. The Gospel reading this Sunday is

about the small seed growing slowly and quietly into the

biggest shrub of all.

Maybe it’s a bit like our parish. Sometimes we can recognise

the problems in the parish and the in the church and what is

going wrong. But we have a number of people of faith com-

ing to Mass, and our celebrations are joyful occasions of prayer and worship. We

also have many people who contribute their time, either with counting money,

gardening and cleaning, visiting the sick and housebound etc. We also have

many people who support the parish financially and so allow us to keep the doors

open.

Next Sunday 24 June we will hold a Parish Luncheon after the 10.30am Mass. It

is an occasion to celebrate who we are as a parish community. A number of

parishioners are helping with the Luncheon: preparing food, setting up tables,

organising tea and coffee etc.

Tickets are $20 each and available from Trudy at the office. It’s a time to

appreciate the small things which are done in the parish, and give thanks for who

we are as a parish community. Hope to see you there!

God bless, Fr John Herd

parish Renewal programme. Three course meal in the parish centre after 10.30am

Mass. Tickets $20 per head. Please make bookings through Trudy in the office.

The Parish Luncheon will commence our Parish Renewal. We will celebrate the

various groups and activities of our parish and invite new members. It will also involve

updating our parish database, as well as renewing the liturgical ministries, such as extraordinary ministers and readers. We

also will look at the Planned Giving programme. At present our income from

planned giving is decreasing and we need to improve it. Thank you to everyone who

contributes to our parish community.
