The roots of our tradition of fifty days of rejoicing from Easter to Pentecost lie in the seven-day rhythm of the Jewish week, drawn from the six days of creation plus a Sabbath day. A favorite name for the Lord’s Day among our ancestors in the faith was “The Eighth Day,” meaning that in Christ a breakthrough to a new humanity was achieved. With that inner architecture, it makes sense to see Pentecost as a week of weeks, forty-nine days plus one, again signaling that a new age has begun in Christ and the outpouring of his Spirit. The Jewish appreciation for Pentecost gave rise to the Jubilee year, the fiftieth year, when debts were released and prisoners set free. Today, the character of our Easter Sundays is conveyed by joyful Alleluias and the rite of sprinkling at Mass. Long ago, people expressed this joy by suspending all rules of fasting and by never kneeling at liturgy. These customs all point to our conviction that time is holy. There is an elegant balance to the Christian year: forty days of Lenten fast and discipline give way to fifty days of unrestrained rejoicing. That’s why it is still Easter! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sixth Sunday of Easter Page 3

LEADERSHIP MEETING: Thursday, June 13th at 7:00pm. The Leadership Council consists of the head of every ministry or organization in the parish. We meet twice a year to facilitate communication among the ministries and organizations and to look at ways of furthering the parish mission in the various groups. The head of every organization or ministry (or a representative) must be in attendance at this meeting to have their events included in the parish activities for the year. SUNDAY GOSPEL: John 14:23-29 These closest friends of Jesus are about to be shaken completely in faith. They will see the man they have come to know as the Lord die on a cross. But before these calamities take place Jesus gives them one final gift, peace, and not just a general feeling of peace, but the very peace of Christ. When he sees them for the first time after the

resurrection in the Upper Room where they are huddled due to fear, Jesus offers this gift again, “Peace be with you.” Jesus had told his friends, “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” This is a difficult lesson to learn, but Jesus never tires of offering his peace to us. - Living Liturgy 2019

Prayer for Armed Forces/ Memorial Day

St. Michael the Archangel,

commander of the heavenly hosts, send you warrior angels to protect and defend

the men and women of our armed forces serving around the world.

Keep them safe from all harm

as they stand guard at freedom’s farthest outposts.

Shorten the time when they can at long last return to their homes,

loved ones and friends.

Into your hands, angels of God, we commend the souls of all

who gave their lives for this land. Guide them safely to the throne of God Most High from Whom

they will receive true peace: Well done, faithful servants!

Amen

STEWARDSHIP CORNER: In living a stewardship way of life, we must discern how best to share our gifts. Discernment needs the Holy Spirit and a desire to follow God’s will, not our own. Our own desires and misconceptions can cause us to use our gifts unwisely. The more mindful we are of how, when, and why we are sharing ourselves, then the greater the impact for God’s glory. O V E R N I G H T R E T R E A T F O R WOMEN: Retreats are an opportunity to grow spiritually and in community with others. Beginning on Saturday morning, June 29th and concluding on Sunday, June 30th before noon, our Women of Faith group is planning an overnight retreat at our parish. There will be an option to attend the retreat but not stay overnight in the parish hall. The theme is "Come to Me." If you are interested in attending the retreat or if you have any questions, please contact Grace Ogonek at [email protected] or leave a message at the parish office.
