Oh, by the way,
Starting Monday, the final days of Advent, from 17 December to 24 December, our focus shifts to our preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas).
Liturgical Conversion Tomorrow! One specific liturgical reflection in the Scriptures is the “O” Antiphons. The Roman Catholic
Church has been singing the “O” Antiphons since at least the 8th century. They are the antiphons that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from 17-23 December. The “O” Antiphons are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the Messianic hopes of the Hebrew Scripture (read Old Testament) to proclaim the coming of the Christ as the fulfillment not only of the Hebrew Scriptures but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative “Come” embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah. The specific “O” Antiphon for each day (with the
Latin introduction) is: December 17--O Sapientia: O Wisdom of our God Most High, guiding creation with power and love: come to teach us the path of knowledge! December 18--O Adonai: O Leader of the House of Israel, giver of the Law to Moses on Sinai: come to rescue us with your mighty power! December 19--O Radix Jesse: O Root of Jesse’s stem, sign of God’s love for all his people: come to save us without delay! December 20--O Clavis David: O Key of David, opening the gates of God’s eternal Kingdom: come and free the prisoners of darkness! December 21--O
Oriens: O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come and shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death. December 22--O Rex Gentium: O King of all nations and keystone of the Church: come and save man, whom you formed from the dust! December 23--O Emmanuel: O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God!
Also every year during this week, the Scriptures and the Liturgy present two indispensable “Advent People”. Over the last two weeks, we heard about the first, St. John the Baptist.
Mary, of course, is a different kind of Advent Person. She prepared for His coming on a very personal level, and by reflecting on her words and actions, we can prepare on such a personal level as well.
A few thoughts on the Advent Gospel passages that address the place of Mary in the story of Christ’s coming:
◼Monday’s Gospel passage from Matthew 1:1-17, give us the extensive genealogy of Jesus. Like other
genealogies of the day, we are mainly told of fathers and sons. Only five mothers are named. The first four, to
quote the late Scripture scholar Fr. Raymond Brown, “had a marital history that contained elements of human
scandal or scorn,” but were “enterprising instruments…of God’s spirit in continuing the sacred line of the
Messiah.” Mary, too, had an unusual marital situation, but, again quoting Brown, “She is the instrument par
excellence of the Holy Spirit.”
◼Thursday’s Gospel tells us of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38). The angel Gabriel announced to Mary
that she would become the mother of the Savior. Mary did not understand, but rather than explaining, Gabriel
assures her that the Holy Spirit is at work; the child will be the Son of God. Gabriel also informed her of
another miraculous birth about to take place. Her cousin, Elizabeth, too old to give birth, would soon give birth.
Mary put herself into God’s hands, saying, “Let it be done to me according to your word.”
◼Friday and Sunday, in Luke 1:39-45, we hear of the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth – the Visitation.
The unborn son of Elizabeth, John (later known as the Baptier), “leaped for joy” in the womb of Elizabeth at the
presence of the unborn Jesus. So this was the first encounter between John, the prophet, and Jesus, the Savior.
◼On Saturday, in Luke 1:46-56, we hear Mary’s Canticle, the Magnificat, and speaks of the fulfillment
of God’s promises as already accomplished facts: “He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he
has sent away empty.” Like Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel’s announcement, these words foreshadow
those of her own Son, in the Beatitudes (Luke 6:20-26).
Prayerfully, enjoy this coming week!

Maranatha: Greek: Μαραναθα) is a two-word Aramaic formula occurring only once in the New
Testament (see Aramaic of Jesus). It appears in Didache 10:14, which is part of the Apostolic Fathers'
collection. It is transliterated into Greek letters rather than translated and, given the nature of early manuscripts,
the lexical difficulty rests in determining just which two Aramaic words constitute the single Greek expression,
found at the end of Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians (1 Cor 16:22). In general, the recent interpretation has
been to select the command option ("Come, Lord!")
