PASTOR’S CORNER: As I have been driving around the area these days, I see the festival yard signs in people’s yards. It is something to see all the places where parishioners live and I make a game of trying to figure out which family lives at those houses. Don’t worry; I usually don’t stop in unannounced. It is a great way of advertising the festival and I am appreciative of those who were able to put one in your yard. The signs went quickly when they were available and before 11:00am Mass there were only a couple left. As I see the signs throughout the community I have been reflecting upon

the influence we have on our neighborhoods. We do not have signs that say a Catholic disciple of Christ lives here, but by our actions and lifestyle we not only identify ourselves but also transform our community. Throughout the summer the gospel at mass has been instructing us on how to be disciples, how to be followers of Jesus. Often, I hear folks say that they do not do anything because they are not involved in an active or public ministry of the church. And yet it is in the daily living as followers of Christ that we have a great impact on those around us. At the end of Mass we are told to go forth and glorify the Lord with our lives. We don’t put a sign in our yard that says we just went to church but we do through our actions reveal that we have been nourished by God and have been sent forth to build the Kingdom of God. Just think of the influence we have had and can continue to have on our local community. With the power of the Spirit we have been sent forth to do great things. As you drive around and see the festival yard signs think about how we continue the mission of Jesus in small but mighty ways in our area. We also can witness to the community in how we come together to provide a safe and fun family time at the parish festival. Volunteers are needed in most activities of the festival. By volunteering you meet some really great people, help the parish, and feel a part of the community. There is a meeting this Wednesday, July 20th at 7:00pm in the parish hall for volunteers. This brief meeting will explain check in procedures as well as particular instructions for the activity that you signed up for. Hope to see you there.

5 0 T H W E D D I N G A N N I V E R S A R Y CELEBRATION: The annual 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration will be held on Sunday, 26 July 2015, at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Bishop Richard G. Lennon, will be the principal celebrant. Reservations are now being accepted for couples married 50 years (married in 1965). Couples who are celebrating other significant anniversaries (55 or over) or have missed previous celebrations are welcome to register and attend. Seating is limited in the Cathedral. Date & Time: Sunday, 26 July 2015 - 2:30 p.m. Mass Place: Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Please call the parish office to register. “THE JOY OF LOVE” is Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation which draws on the conclusion of the Synod of Bishops, which gathered over the course of two years to discuss challenges to the family. You can download the entire statement from the Vatican website, www.vatican.va. Copies are also available at local bookstores. I would encourage you to read for yourself this statement but some of the highlights will be printed each week in the bulletin over the summer. Ch 4 Love in Marriage:

• Some think that they are important because

they are more knowledgeable than others; they want to lord it over them. Yet what really makes us important is a love that understands, shows concern, and embraces the weak. (#97)

• Indignation is only healthy when it makes us react to a grave injustice; when it permeates our attitude toward others, it is harmful. (#103)

• How am I going to make peace? By getting down on my knees? No! Just by a small gesture, a little something, and harmony within your family will be restored. Just a little caress, no words are necessary. But do not let the day end without making peace in your family. (#104)

• Today we recognize that being able to forgive others implies the liberating experience of understanding and forgiving ourselves. (#107)

• We have to realize that all of us are a complex mixture of light and shadows. (#113)

• Love trusts, it sets free, it does not try to control, possess, and dominate everything. This freedom, which fosters independence, an openness to the world around us and to new experiences, can only enrich and expand relationships. (#115)
