Dear Friends:

Knowing how expeditiously this Lenten Season has come and ‘almost’ gone, the remainder of the year is look-ing perilously short. Culminating in next weekend’s Easter celebrations, these mid-April days allow for little ‘free time’, filled as they are with multiple liturgical ceremonies, our Good Friday Prayer Breakfast along with the opportunities to meet our visiting Parkland youth in person for the first time; FaceTime is most certainly a modern miracle...but it cannot replace real-world, face to face interactions. No sooner will we have celebrated the empty tomb of Easter than our Ladies Spring event will be enjoyed on the following Saturday, April 27th and poooof....there goes April. Mother’s Day comes knocking on our hearts less than two weeks later, Sunday, May 12th, promptly followed by our High School Youth Confirmation Mass occurring on Thursday, May 16th, ANTICIPATED by a celebratory dinner Cheeyoon and I will prepare on the prior Tuesday for the Confirmation youth and their sponsors.

Barely allowing time for Memorial Day Weekend, the St. Francis 8th Grade class will be graduating on Friday, May 31st and then Cheeyoon and I, along with my Priest Retreat Set-Up/Oversight Team will head out to the Hyatt Regency in Indian Wells for a week of tender care and tasty feeding of our Diocesan) clergy, (along with a scattering of Religious Order sorts.) We return from Priest Retreat to enjoy the PENTECOST MINISTRY FAIR on the weekend of June 8-9 and then the anticipated GRAND OPENING and CONSECRATION of CHRIST CA-THEDRAL will occur on Friday, July 19th...with Deacon Michael’s and Deacon Daniel’s Ordination to Priesthood (the FIRST Ordinations in Christ Cathedral) on Saturday, July 27th...with Fr. Michael’s Santa Clara First Mass and Reception on Sunday, July 28th, and Fr. Daniel’s Santa Clara First Mass and Reception the following week-end, Sunday, August 4th. Both Fr. Michael’s and Fr. Daniel’s Santa Clara Masses will occur at the 10 am Sunday Masses...WE ARE CANCELLING THE 12 NOON Masses those two weekends so that the First Masses can be adequately celebrated and their receptions enjoyed. Once Michael and Daniel are fully ordained into Priesthood...September will be but a few weeks distant and our next Seminarian Intern, Vincent Nguyen, will officially begin his internship among us. Somewhere in the midst of all that, we (I) must go through the departure of Cheeyoon as he returns to Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon...so that he may speedily, with the grace of God, be the next Or-dination we celebrate, Diaconate in 2020, Priesthood in 2021. Cheeyoon’s last weekend among us will be Father’s Day Weekend, June 15th & 16th, with a Farewell Reception following the 10am Mass on the 16th. Oh yes...did I mention the ‘empty-nest’ syndrome that I now recognize will accompany his departure? I celebrated his arrival...and come mid-June, I will mourn his departure...the Lord, gives, the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord!

Our Permanent Church Development Campaign Team has been regularly meeting with Mr. Chuck Kluger of Kluger Architects, the most recent gathering was March 22nd and the next gathering is approaching on May 3rd, with an additional Road Trip scheduled for Mother’s Day Saturday, May 11th to review two Churches (in Escon-dido and La Jolla areas) our Team has praised and admired, as potential ‘models’ for our own. Our 2019 Devel-opment Campaign PLEDGE DRIVE continues to slowly grow....we are within ‘spitting distance’ of $600,000.00 raised in 2019 PLEDGES and yet we still have 51% of our ‘Registered’ parishioners sitting on the side-lines and choosing to not participate in any way?? I have been deeply touched by the generosity of all those who have cho-sen to make a pledge...some pledges have been ‘small’ and others have been ‘large’, but each pledge represents the desire of those making them to ‘claim ownership’ of our Permanent Sanctuary when it finally rises. I continue to hope that the upcoming PHONE CALLS by our Campaign Outreach Team will perhaps nudge more of our Community into the ACTIVE PLEDGE category, but we shall see. For all those praying for our success, THANK YOU for your spiritual faithfulness.

Easter just days away, a reminder might be appropriate that ALL of our FAITH CELEBRATIONS are meant to be templates for the spiritual rhythms within our lives. In 2019, our personal Good Fridays can be discovering a marriage is dissolving, finding out a son or daughter is addicted to drugs or alcohol, being diagnosed with cancer or some other life-sapping disease, discovering you cannot naturally conceive children, etc. etc. These traumas do not usually occur on Fridays and their pain does not last for only a day. Every Good Friday experience changes our lives and leaves us grasping (gasping) for something to which we can cling. RESURRECTIONS do indeed likewise occur but not always on Sundays and most certainly not three days after your Good Friday news. Resur-rections occur when we are finally worn out to fight anymore and become resigned to our future; resurrections occur when we have cried ourselves dry and realize we must accept our ‘new normal; resurrections occur when we spiritually awaken within our consciousness and realize we are surviving whatever it was that once seemed un-survivable. EASTER WILL COME...to that we may cling...EASTER WILL COME....but each and every day must be slowly lived, endured and experienced....because WHEN EASTER COMES....we will be different peo-ple, precisely because of what we have experienced. Thanks for working your way through all of this. See you throughout this week...and please remember, you are loved. FKB

April 13-14, 2019Palm/Passion Sunday

Isaiah 50:4-7 Philippians 2:6-11 Luke 22:14-23:56The people of Paradise, California, will NEVER forget the November, 2018 fire that killed 85 people and destroyed their entire town. The German Jews still living who experienced Kristallnacht on November 9-10 of 1938 will never forget how their lives speedily spiraled downward into the chaos of the Holocaust. Those who were enjoying a beautiful late Summer morning in New York City will never forget where they were when the planes hit and the towers came down on September 11, 2001. As much as we pursue and crave HAPPINESS, many of us cannot remember the details of assorted HAPPY moments. Happiness comes, happiness goes, and we live our lives pretty much unchanged. Nightmares, disasters and upheavals change our lives; who we become AFTER the dark experiences and tragedies of life is NOT whom we were before. So it is that we as Christians of all faiths commemorate Palm/Passion Weekend with the first full recitation of the Passion of Jesus Christ. This is the crucial redemptive and CENTRAL story around which God ALLOWS us to reject him, torment him, torture him, kill him and discard his corpse in a borrowed grave....all so that he may demonstrate his unfathomable love for us. None of us HEARING the Passion narrative were present in Jerusalem when the details of the story occurred. Indeed, most of Jerusalem did not take notice of most of the things that grab our attention: Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem across strewn palms, the washing of the disciple’s feet, the breaking of the bread or the passing of the cup, the torture and mockery committed against Jesus by the Roman soldiers, the nailing of Jesus to the Cross, the anguish of a mother watching her son die before her eyes. Yet, this weekend...we reawaken this story within us; this is HOW MUCH GOD LOVES US, that he will allow us to throw the direst of tantrums and allow us to humiliate and kill him. THIS story has changed human history and presumably it has changed the lives of each of us here at this Mass. In overlaying this story on our own times, can we see ourselves in any of the characters? Have we rushed by and ignored the presence of Jesus on the streets of Yorba Linda? Have people unexpectedly comforted (washed our feet) us when we most needed it? Have we felt judged and rejected by our society, our family, those we thought we could trust? Have we been too frightened to stand with someone in trouble? Have we been part of the CROWD screaming for Jesus’ crucifixion rather than the ones who stood by him to the end? For 2,000+ years this story has been retold...BECAUSE IT IS OUR STORY...the story of us at our WORST...and how God still chooses to redeem and love us. There was nothing pleasant or happy about Good Friday, but because of that day, everything for evermore has changed...including us.

Thank you for sharing these early hours of Holy Week with our Santa Clara community on this Palm/Passion weekend. Blessed Palms are available outside following Mass on the Courtyard side, feel free to take as many as you wish (please do not take any of the palms INSIDE the Hall...they are NOT blessed.) You are reminded of the TRIDUUM which begins on Holy Thursday at 7pm, continues on Good Friday at 7pm and concludes on Holy Saturday at 7pm. There is NO 5pm Mass on Holy Saturday and no confessions either. On Easter Sunday, the Mass schedule is the usual Sunday schedule of 8am, 10am and 12noon. All Masses are crowded (of course.... it’s Easter!) so please allow yourselves ample time to arrive early to find parking and get seated. Parking will be available on both sides of the street as well as on the field behind the fence...please use caution when crossing the road. Knowing there will be plenty of extended family and new friends joining us on Easter Weekend, please, please, please, come prepared to SMILE at the people in your usual seats, WELCOME the people you do not recognize, GREET those who look confused and guide those who are obviously lost...especially when they need to locate the restrooms. Let’s give ALL our visitors a reason to return to worship with us again and again and again. THANKS!! Welcome to Holy Week...and remember, you are loved. FKB

mens ministryMen, come and join us!

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another”.

The Men’s Ministry at Santa Clara is de-signed to give an opportunity for the adult men of the church to meet for times of fellowship and mutual edification. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month, 6am-7am @ Santa Clara. Breakfast will be served. We encourage all adult men (21+) to come and join us!

Please contact Eric Summerfield by email at: [email protected] or by phone at (714)722-0438

Young adult bible seriesThe Book of Genesis is filled with rich theology and captivating stories that reveal God’s great love for His people. It is intended and catered to the young adults of this community(ages 18 - 35).This is a 14-week series. If this interests you, send me an email at [email protected].

Please include your name and phone num-ber. I will reply with further information on the series. Our meetings will be on Thursday nights form 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Our next gathering will be on Thursday, April 25th.

Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid.

John 19:41Having a powerful emotional and tender place within many of our hearts, transforming our Church at Christmas with beautiful Art and Environment is a slam-dunk. Of COURSE we want our Church (temporary as it is) to look beautiful for the holidays...we want to show it off to our friends and family who join us for Masses and be able to ‘lovingly brag’ by sending photos of family posing in front of hundreds of poinsettias and a beautifully arranged Nativity scene. Interestingly, as a MATTER of DOCTRINE and FAITH....there would be no Christmas if Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday had not occurred.....and thus, it is important that we likewise transform our Church into an EASTER environment of respectful, EXUBERANT beauty. Unlike the Christmas Season that lasts for just a few weeks....the Easter Season runs from April 21st to Pentecost, June 9th...which means we need to maintain our celebratory Easter Art and Environment for SEVEN WEEKS. What we have done in the past seems to have worked well....thus...we are doing it again this year. Rather than asking you to go out and obtain hundreds of plants and flowers...getting your cars soiled and perhaps frustrating you if you cannot locate just the right plant...out of OUR LOVE FOR YOU....our Art & Environment Team will do all the dirty work. We will shop, we will load our cars, we will keep everything watered and alive....we will change out the flowers as the season leans toward Pentecost...we will do it ALL FOR YOU, so that your (our) Easter will be beautifully memorable. FOR YOUR PART...all we ask is that you help pay for everything by using one of the EASTER FLOWER envelopes available at the entrances/exits. Yes, it takes a lot of work and effort to transform our ‘Hall’ into a beautiful Easter GARDEN...but with your financial help...we can promise you a Santa Clara home that will suitably honor the Resurrection of Jesus in a BEAUTIFUL way. Thanks for your help and your generosity.

A Reflection letter from seminarian cheeyoon . . .Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Some of you may remember the earthquake that hit Yorba Linda on April 3rd at around 5am. It took me by sur-prise. It has been so long since I felt an earthquake. The rumbling was strong enough to wake me up, but not long enough to get out of my bed and take cover. I was in that half-awake and half-asleep space. When I fully awoke, I had already forgotten all about it. Later in the afternoon, my parents texted me if I experienced an earthquake. I texted back saying, “Oh yeah, so it wasn’t a dream!” I tried to replay that moment when I woke up. I do remember feeling fearful. I was sitting up in my bed and I was frozen, probably because I was still partially asleep. Although my memory is hazy, I do remember feeling a sense of fear. As soon as the shaking stopped, my head immediately fell back on the pillow.

It’s interesting how fear works. We usually associate fear with the experience of being scared. The cause of this scare can be of many things. As kids, we were scared of the dark, or the monsters under our bed and in our clos-et. It’s the unknown that made us squirm. We imagine that someone or something will pop out at any moment. When we watch a scary movie, we tense up because the suspense is too much to bear. There is also a fun side of fear. We like to play practical jokes on our friends. We hide behind walls or doors as we wait to surprise them.

If I were to be honest, I do not get scared very easily. I mention this not to boast of myself. It’s probably because I have become desensitized due to all the scary movies I’ve watched, riding the highest roller coasters and walk-ing into every haunted maze I can find. They have become more of a thrill than fear. When I was a small child, I remember being terrified from watching Chucky for the first time. On that night, I stopped sleeping with my teddy bear. It had to go! My interest in horror movies began when I saw The Sixth Sense. The movie was not only scary, but it had a great story. After that, I watched the classic of all classics, The Exorcist. My fascination for horror movies grew. It got to a point when I would intentionally watch these movies at night with all the lights turned off. I guess I enjoyed the challenge. As I got older, I stopped my fear seeking agendas. I recognized that it was spiritually unhealthy. As fun as it may seem, it opens the person to unnecessary emotions and dark spirits.

As we mature and grow older, fear takes on a different form. Instead of an external force, it becomes internal. A Christian understanding of fear can be defined as the thing which inhibits us from loving the other. Love is simply to will the good of the other person. Love may be easy to speak about and define, but so difficult to do. It’s difficult to love because fear sets in and our fear wants to preserve the self from being judged or hurt. When we see an injustice, we may have the urge to act and reverse the wrong, but our fear holds us back. The fear is our unwillingness to risk. When love is given, there is a risk being taken by the lover. Through the act of love, we risk by giving ourselves. It is a sacrifice that we make. We fear that by getting involved, others will view us in a certain light. There is also the fear of not receiving love in return. These insecurities limit us from fully living our lives as God has intended.

So, how can we overcome this fear? First and foremost, we mustn’t rely on our human strength, but instead turn to the loving Father. In today’s reading, we hear that Jesus agonized before he faced his horrific execution. Just as Jesus prayed in agony at the garden, we too are urged to lift our eyes and hearts to the Eternal Father. I have always interpreted this scene as Jesus’ natural and human reaction to his known death. But after a time of reflection, I think there is a deeper and even more personal undertone. During his years of public ministry, Jesus established a deep relationship with his followers, disciples, and family. Now, he is moments away from leaving them behind through his death on the cross. Although he knows his death will bring eternal salvation, it is always hard to leave the ones you love. There will be no more meals, no more conversations, walks, cries and laughs. These are his risks and sacrifices. Again, there is always risk when one loves. Jesus, our lover, risked everything for us. He gave his whole being because he embodied the love of the Father. The Father risked his son for the sake of our salvation. This is how much God loves us.

The next time you are given an opportunity to love, go ahead and weigh the risks. However, do not stop there. Pray to our Father so that he may grant you the fortitude to risk it all and to love in freedom.

Always in Christ,

Cheeyoon Chun
