A young lawyer defending a wealthy businessman in a complex lawsuit feared that the evidence was against his client. So he asked the senior partner of the law firm whether it would be appropriate to send the judge in the case a box of expensive cigars.
The partner was appalled by the suggestion. ‘The judge is an honourable man, and I can guarantee that if you do that, you will lose the case.’
Six weeks later, the judge ruled in favour of the lawyer’s client. Congratulating his colleague, the senior partner said: ‘Aren’t you glad you didn’t send those cigars to the judge?’‘But I did send them. I just enclosed the plaintiff’s lawyer’s business card!

A Sunday School teacher was struggling to open the four-digit combination lock on the church cabinet. She had been told the combination, ut couldn’t remember it. In the end, she asked the priest for help. After the first three numbers, the priest paused, stared blankly for a moment and then looked heavenward as if for divine inspiration. Immediately he came up with the fourth number and opened the cabinet. The teacher gushed: “I’m so impressed by your faith.’The priest said : ‘It’s nothing really. You see, I can never remember the combination either. That’s why I wrote the number on a piece of paper and stuck it to the ceiling.’

Arriving home from school, a boy asked his mother : ‘What is sex?’Dreading the day that she would have to explain all this, she spent the next hour telling him about the birds and the bees and where babies come from. When she had finished, her son smiled, pulled a school questionnaire from his pocket and pointed to the word ‘sex’. ‘That’s cool, mam, but how am I supposed to get it all in this little box next to the F and the M?’

Come swiftly, O Lord, to the dark moments when we are lost. Make us aware of Thy presence. Strengthen us to resist the urges and pulls to deeper darkness. Stir us to move away from the dark moments of sinfulness towards the light of Thy forgiveness. Come quickly, O Lord, as we call – or forget to call – and keep Thou close to us and keep us close to Thee this day and night and as far as the days and nights stretch before us, through Christ. Amen.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Tomorrow starts the third week of the Lenten season. It is a time to be with you in a special way, a time to pray, a time to fast, and thus to follow you. I know that Lent is going to be a very hard time for me. The choice for your way has to be made every moment of my life. I have to choose thoughts that are your thoughts, words that are your words, and actions that are your actions. Please, Lord, be with me at every moment and in every place. Give me the strength and courage to live this season faithfully, so that, when Easter comes, I will be able to taste with joy the new life which you have prepared for me.Amen.
