What you can’t live without? My two sons Omar and Edwin & my extended family. What are your hobbies?Jogging, reading, gardening, hiking, painting and going to the beach are the ones I enjoy most right now. What’s on your playlist? I have to say that classic rock is my music, though I enjoy many other genres.Where do you look for inspiration?Faith, nature, art, books and the example of extraordinary people. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Whatever I do by then, I expect to have my heart on it. What is your favorite thing about working for Family and MWR? We are constantly changing to stay in tune with trends & customer needs and I like that challenge. And of course, working with the dedicated team that makes Family MWR what it is.

Family and MWR Employee HighlightCongratulations Evelyn De La Cruz

CYSS Outreach Services ManagerMs. Evelyn De La Cruz started working in Fort Buchanan as a summer hire in the CYSS Summer Camp in June 2000. After meeting her supervisor’s expectations she

was kept in the program as CYSS flexible time employee. She combined for 15 years her regular job as a teacher in the Department of Education and work as a Child, Youth Program Assistant in the afternoons. While being a CYPA she served as a Chaperon in more than six (6) Youth Leadership Forums at Georgia, Virginia, Texas and Alabama, with teens of our CYSS Teen Center Program representing Fort Buchanan with a high degree of professionalism. Later she applied for a Training & Programming Specialist posi-tion in 2010 and was selected. In this

position Evelyn had the opportunity to enhance the Staff’s development by training them in appropriate practices and implementing the Army Four Service Areas when they plan activities through trainings and workshops. She was also certified as a Red Cross Instructor. She was tasked to do many other duties; such as working as the CDC Assis-tant Director for eight months, HIRED Program, Parent and Youth Education Plan, BGCA and providing support to the Parent Central Services Office when needed. In February 2012, Evelyn was detailed to oversee the CYSS Parent Central Services office, which was one of her biggest challenges. In March 2013, she was selected as the Official CYSS Outreach Services Director. She has expressed that her experience working in CYSS has taught her that “to accomplish the mission in any organiza-tion we must work as a team and believing it can be done! Each person is a key factor for the success of the Child, Youth, & School Services Programs.” By Carmen Dieppa, CYSS Chief

Keep Your Pets Healthy This Summer CPT Taylor Opel, VeterinarianSummer is a time for both you and your pet to enjoy the sun-shine and outdoors, but along with the fun, the season also offers up situations that can endanger your pet. By taking precautions, you can keep your furry friends safe this summer: • During warm weather, the inside of your car can reach 120° in a matter of minutes, even if you’re parked in the shade. Pets who are left in hot cars even briefly can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage, and can even die. Leave your pet cool and refreshed at home while you’re on the road. • Summer is often a time when people fertilize their lawns and work in their gardens. But beware: plant food, fertilizer, and insecticides can be fatal if your pet ingests them. Read the label on all products used in your garden and research toxic plants in your area.• With people and dogs spending more time outside, dog bites are likely to increase in the summer months. Spaying or neutering your dog reduces the likelihood that they will bite and provides many other health benefits. Obedience classes can also reduce the risk that your dog will bite another animal or human.• Make sure your pet is always wearing a collar and identi-fication tag. If you are separated from your pet, an ID tag may very well be his or her ticket home. Ask your veterinarian about microchipping which can identify your pet if they loose their ID tag.• Protect your pet with monthly Heartworm prevention. Heartworm disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, can be fatal in both dogs and cats.• Pets and pools can equal disaster. Pre-vent free access to pools and always su-pervise a pet in a pool. If you have a small dog, install a ramp so they can easily get out of the pool. If boating with your pet invest in a doggie life jacket.• Pets need exercise even when it is hot, but extra care needs to be taken with

older dogs, short-nosed dogs, and those with thick coats. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours. Keep in mind that asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet’s paws.• Another threat is fleas and ticks. Use only flea and tick treat-ments recommended by your veterinarian. Some over-the-counter flea and tick products can be toxic, even when used according to instructions. Never use dog flea and tick medica-tions on your cat as this can cause serious side effects. • Pets can get sunburned too, and your pet may require sun-screen on his or her nose and ear tips. Pets with light-colored noses or light-colored fur on their ears are particu-larly vulnerable to sunburn and skin cancer.• In summer, your pet can suf-fer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These conditions could cause your pet to die. Signs of heat exhaustion/stroke include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue. If your pet does become overheated, immediately lower his body temperature by moving your pet into the shade and apply cool (not ice cold) water over his body. Apply cold towels or ice packs to your pet’s head, neck, and chest only. Let your pet drink small amounts

of water or lick ice cubes. Most importantly, get him to a veterinarian immediately.• Heat stroke is a very serious condition but can be prevented by taking certain precautions:1) Do not cage animals outdoors without adequate shade or water and at very high temperatures keep pets indoors.2) Do not leave animals in closed compartments exposed to the oven effect of the sun.3) Provide plenty of water and shade for your pets.4) Take precautions with old, obese, or sick animals. If you have any questions or to make an appointment please call Fort Buchanan Veterinary Treatment Facility at
