It’s a pleasure to be able to publicly recognise their invaluable contribution. Thanks too to all those who offered their time and goods to support this worthwhile event. Reduce your fire risk In a rural fire, most homes burn down through hot embers being blown onto or into them. Here are some tips to reduce the risk of you losing your home. Keep roofs and gutters free of leaves Ensure no embers can blow under the house Don’t store flammable material under your house Keep 1-2 metres from your home free of flammables, including bark During summer, store fire wood at least 10 metres away from the house Limb any trees within 10 metres of your home 2-3 metres off the ground. We have had several fires start with people mowing grass and hitting rocks or wire. Be careful if grinding or cutting metal in the outdoors, little sparks can start big fires. The first 100 riders will receive a free coffee or hot chocolate. You can grab some free toast and Pics Peanut Butter, listen to the Plinkers (a very cool ukelele band) and there will also be a free hairdresser to deal with any "helmet hair" issues, so there really is no excuse not to get on your bike on Go By Bike Day! Please 'pop the top' for smarter recycling It’s now time to change over to your new 2015 recycling calendars which were sent to all residents just before Christmas. If you have not received a calendar they are available from the Council’s Customer Service Centre and also available online. To assist Nelmac to make the most of Nelson City Council’s kerbside recycling scheme, residents are asked to take a few seconds to remove the tops from plastic drink bottles prior to placing them in blue bins. Both the bottles and tops are recyclable, but they do need to part company before entering the recycling process. Trapped air in capped plastic bottles inhibits the squashing and baling process and reduces the affordability of recycling overall. Thank you for keeping our city’s recycling scheme working efficiently.
