Principal’s Address

Welcome back to Term 4. Firstly, I have enjoyed the op-portunity to step up to the role of relieving Principal in the absence of Mr. Saxon who, after seven years, has taken the opportunity to have a well-deserved break. This term is always a busy term at LBHS, and one which is very important for the learning for all our boys. College I will resume their HSC journey at the beginning of week 6, and our current Year 10 will begin as College I. The rest of our year groups in Week 6 will begin their new scholastic year.Congratulations, to Mrs. Sayed and the graduating Col-lege II Class 2014. I would like to publicly recognise and acknowledge the wonderful support and time she has invested into this fine group of young men. I am sure if they can take with them a fraction of her caring, nurturing and never give-up-attitude, they will be successful in their chosen field. I truly believe that the graduation ceremony was one of the finest I have ever seen. The standard of the dress of our students remains gen-erally high, with most boys wearing their school uniform proudly. Year 10 Camp at Yarramundi

This term, Year 10 was lucky enough to be spoilt with an awesome camp by our amazing, hardworking Year Adviser, Ms. Bea. It was time to pack our bags, say goodbye to family for a while, and head off, not as in-dividuals, but as a team, to our Year 10 Camp! We left for Yarramundi, located near Richmond, on the 22nd of October for three fun-filled days.

Upon arrival, we were introduced to our facilitators, who helped us all face our fears, participating in activi-ties like abseiling, kayaking, navigating the ‘cave maze’, and swinging on a giant swing! Our cabins were the places we called home each night, staying with our clos-est friends. Every night we amused ourselves by playing games, talking, enjoying the nature, and Ian!

The memories and fun that we had on camp were un-forgettable and it served as a time of relaxation before College. Thanks to our amazing year adviser, Ms.Bea, camp gave us all a chance to connect and get to know each other, strengthening relationships like never be-fore. It also gave us a chance to see our year advisor swinging off a 20 metre tall swing, screaming for her dear life! Thank you Ms. Bea, Mr. Ahmed, Ms. Demetrios, and Ms. Wilson for making Year 10 camp possible.

iChoose Elective Excursion 2015

To launch the exciting, new Year 9 elective class for 2015, ‘iChoose’, a group of students took part in an ex-cursion on the 29th October. The aim of the excursion was to promote team work and allow the students to gain insight into the concept of ‘iChoose’.

I thought the iChoose excursion was great! The amazing race was better thanI expected: scanning all those bar codes with the ipad and doing all those activities, like making the human pyramid, was funny and interesting.

I also enjoyed the challenge we had to do at Bunnings Warehouse. Our mission was to create something that flees, floats and/or flies, but we only had $10 to buy all of the materials. In the end, we made the decision and we were happy with it. Later on, we tested our inven-tion to see if it worked.

I’m glad the iChoose elective allows us do all of these fun activities. I think we should have more excursions like this for iChoose and I am happy I get to be a part of it.

The SRC Presents: Ms. Martins, English/ ESL Teacher

1. Why did you become a teacher?Because I love English and love books and wanted to share this love with others.

2. How long have you been teaching at LBHS?Since Term 4, 2012.

3. What’s one thing you like to do outside of school?I like traveling, reading and hanging with my dog, Spike.

4. If you could do another job instead of teaching what would it be?I would love to own a book store with a little café.

5. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?Maybe teaching overseas and having a family.

6. What is it you like about teaching English?I love grammar – it makes writing clear, musical and beautiful! I also love teaching good books.

7. What’s one thing you have learned from being a teacher? You need to be patient and optimistic.

8. What would you prefer: to read a book or watch a movie? Which one? Both! I love reading good books, but I also love watching a mindless action film on the weekend. Who doesn’t?

Capoeira Youth Week 2014

Capoeira is a traditional Afro-Brazilian art which com-bines non-contact martial arts and dance. Through fighting routines, as well as Portuguese songs and music, students develop physical and mental strength, balance, discipline and confidence in themselves and their abilities. This year, ten Liverpool Boys High School students have participated in weekly Capoeira lessons provided by STARTTS and taught by Capoeira expert, Mestre Roxinho. Throughout the year, students have also enjoyed attending various excursions and per-formances, including the 2014 annual Capoeira Youth Encounter. To celebrate this milestone, and a year of training and achievements, we asked some of our boys what learning Capoeira has meant to them:

‘Having the freedom to express myself in a non-judge-mental environment.’ – James Mansaray

‘Fun, exercise, confidence, communication and respect.’ – Kashif Tahiri

‘A new life. It tells me that everything happens for a reason. I have learnt what I am capable of and that everything I do affects others. Capoeira is a good way to express yourself.’ – Samnap Dav

‘It’s a great way to meet friends. Capoeira moves are like life: the choices you make (moves) effect the future (the game).’ – Robert Mathias

‘I can express the way I feel and it helps me concentrate more. It also tells me never to underestimate myself.’ – Emmanuel Nyosemana

‘Capoeira means being free. It makes me stronger, gets my anger out, teaches me self-control, how to be confi-dent and how to be respectful.’ – Sarmad Ali

‘It’s fun and helps me keep fit!’ – Selim Altinok

Engagement Faculty News: Year 10 Prepare for College

Over the past few weeks, Year 10 have been completing their All My Own Work and Crossroads programs. Some students attended the camp at Yarramundi and the re-maining students engaged in programs at school and off-site at The Liverpool Library and AMF Bowling. Two guest speakers from the Youth Pathways Network, Lana and David, discussed their roles as a sales consultant and a lawyer who workedfor the Federal Police.

All of Year 10 must complete All My Own Work, a com-pulsory online program where students learn about good scholarship, ethics, copyright and plagiarism, which prepares them for their Senior College studies. This must be completed for The Board of Studies, prior to entering College. Students were also introduced to Reflection Centre and general information about College life. On Friday we will hold an assembly to formerly rec-ognise the end of Year 10.

We are also celebrating the great results students at-tained in the Elementary Maths Program. Students from Years 8 and 9 attended a Maths program and were tu-tored by school staff and volunteers from Compass, Uni-versity of Sydney. Their basic Maths skills have signifi-cantly increased.
