What is Markets doing on goods?

Supporting innovation capacity and identification of appropriate technology towards increased livestock productivity (fodder, genetics)

Piloting organisational models to improve performance of livestock value chains, access to services (producer hubs, innovation platforms)

Supporting systems to reduce burden of animal disease on smallholder livestock, including barriers to markets and trade (PDS, CBT)

Providing evidence and decision support to guide policy-making in support of smallholder livestock keeper livelihoods and their communities (dairy Assam, pig sector Vietnam, CAADP)

What is Markets doing on bads?

Supporting improved livestock productivity leading to potentially reduced environmental footprint (fodder, genetics)

Assessment of food safety risk in local livestock systems and piloting pragmatic strategies to mitigate those (milk, poultry, pork)

Developing approaches and capacity to mitigate threats from emerging zoonotic diseases and their control measures (PE/PDS, ecohealth capacity)

What could Markets be doing more or different?

Looking past process, innovation and capacity building to outcomes, performance and impact (with P&G, SLF)

Better integrating risk assessment, value chains and ecohealth approaches, combining both risk-based and incentive-based thinking

Measures of development performance for the entire value chain, so as to be able to compare development scenarios, including retailing behaviour.

Testing the impacts of scenarios of global change on livestock product consumption, prices and the impacts on children malnutrition

designing adaptation strategies to climate change to improve livelihoods resilience in some systems

What is SLF doing on bads?

Impacts, adaptation and mitigation of climate change: measuring the impacts of climate change on people’s

vulnerability status and their systems (crops/livestock, etc) Quantifying GHG emissions from livestock systems and

designing mitigation strategies to reduce them

Quantifying the impacts of drivers of change (pop. density, increased demand for livestock products, etc) on the environmental impacts of livestock systems

Identifying constraints, trade-offs and options for improving natural resource management: water, biomass trade-offs, nutrient management, feeds, land use

What could SLF be doing more or different?

Work more effectively with other ILRI teams

Link better the work on environmental and social impacts (poverty, nutrition)

Work more on interventions and investments to reduce the bads (happening but slowly)

Improve the linkages between work at different scales (from global to local and viceversa)

A completely impossible question for SLF!
