Biotechnology Theme

Vish Nene

Page 3: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What is Biotechnology doing on goods?

Securing livestock assets via control of animal disease (vaccine development)

Making smarter use of livestock biodiversity (disease resistance and production)

Contribute to human welfare and medicine

Page 4: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What is Biotechnology doing on bads?

Developing a system for detection of emerging infectious diseases (pathogen hunting and diversity)

Reducing the threat of zoonoses

Diagnostics

Page 5: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What could Biotechnology be doing more or different?

Better integration across different teams working on “goods” and “bads”

Research on rumen function & microbes

Engage in the debate on the use of animal GMOs

Page 6: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

A tough question for Biotechnology!

Markets Theme

Steve Staal

Page 8: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What is Markets doing on goods?

Supporting innovation capacity and identification of appropriate technology towards increased livestock productivity (fodder, genetics)

Piloting organisational models to improve performance of livestock value chains, access to services (producer hubs, innovation platforms)

Supporting systems to reduce burden of animal disease on smallholder livestock, including barriers to markets and trade (PDS, CBT)

Providing evidence and decision support to guide policy-making in support of smallholder livestock keeper livelihoods and their communities (dairy Assam, pig sector Vietnam, CAADP)

Page 9: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What is Markets doing on bads?

Supporting improved livestock productivity leading to potentially reduced environmental footprint (fodder, genetics)

Assessment of food safety risk in local livestock systems and piloting pragmatic strategies to mitigate those (milk, poultry, pork)

Developing approaches and capacity to mitigate threats from emerging zoonotic diseases and their control measures (PE/PDS, ecohealth capacity)

Page 10: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What could Markets be doing more or different?

Looking past process, innovation and capacity building to outcomes, performance and impact (with P&G, SLF)

Better integrating risk assessment, value chains and ecohealth approaches, combining both risk-based and incentive-based thinking

Measures of development performance for the entire value chain, so as to be able to compare development scenarios, including retailing behaviour.

Page 11: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

A very tough question for Markets!

People, Livestock, Environment Theme

Shirley Tarawali

Page 13: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What is PLE doing on goods?

Livelihood (productivity – market)

Better feeding for improved productivity Better access to and use of water for improved

productivity

Environment

Diversification of income options through livestock based stewardship of natural resources

Page 14: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What is PLE doing on bads?

Environment Greenhouse gas emissions: improved productivity

and reduced emissions through better feeding Excessive water use for feed production: improved

efficiency of feed use (better feeds; combinations) Overgrazing - degradation of rangelands: options and

incentives for livestock management of ecosystem services (C sequestration; wildlife biodiversity)

Page 15: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What could PLE be doing more or different?

People: social implications of livestock systems transition

Livestock: intersection of livestock and soil fertility (forages, livestock management, manure mangement, biomass use)

Environment: pollution

Page 16: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

An extremely difficult question for PLE!

Poverty & Gender Group

Page 18: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

How P&G works to understand, quantify, & encourage the goods

Assets Piloting and evaluation of index based livestock insurance

(piloting in 1 district in Kenya) Impact of agricultural development projects on women’s assets

(8-10 large-scale R4D projects in SSA and SA) Income

PROGEBE (12 sites, 4 countries) Crop residues and fodder markets (India) Livestock value chains for women (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda)

Food Security and Nutrition PROGEBE Emory-EADD

Page 19: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

How P&G works to understand, quantify and mitigate the bads

Potential disempowerment of women Threats to women’s access to livestock and

income from livestock products (Kenya and Mozambique)

Soil health and livestock keeping in intensive systems crop residues and conservation agriculture (1000

hh in IGP on conservation agriculture; 50,000 reached by CSISA’s hubs)

Page 20: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

The Gaps that P&G could work on

Trade offs, eg between poverty, economic growth, environment, health

Page 21: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

A very tricky question for P&G!

Sustainable Livestock Futures Group

An Notenbaert

Page 23: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What is SLF doing on goods?

Understanding drivers of agricultural change and identifying key livestock systems where sustainable food production could be increased

Testing the impacts of scenarios of global change on livestock product consumption, prices and the impacts on children malnutrition

designing adaptation strategies to climate change to improve livelihoods resilience in some systems

Page 24: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What is SLF doing on bads?

Impacts, adaptation and mitigation of climate change: measuring the impacts of climate change on people’s

vulnerability status and their systems (crops/livestock, etc) Quantifying GHG emissions from livestock systems and

designing mitigation strategies to reduce them

Quantifying the impacts of drivers of change (pop. density, increased demand for livestock products, etc) on the environmental impacts of livestock systems

Identifying constraints, trade-offs and options for improving natural resource management: water, biomass trade-offs, nutrient management, feeds, land use

Page 25: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

What could SLF be doing more or different?

Work more effectively with other ILRI teams

Link better the work on environmental and social impacts (poverty, nutrition)

Work more on interventions and investments to reduce the bads (happening but slowly)

Improve the linkages between work at different scales (from global to local and viceversa)

Page 26: Livestock goods and bads: Perspectives from ILRI research

A completely impossible question for SLF!
