living at nu RESIDENTIAL SERVICESNORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY
welcome to your
nu home More than 4,000 students choose to live on campus, and call Northwestern University their home. Whether you decide to live in a residence hall, residential community, residential college, or special-interest housing, living on campus is sure to be one of the most exciting and memorable times of your life!
LIVE CAREFREE! You will not have to worry about leaky faucets or burned out light bulbs. Our maintenance and housekeeping staff is here to serve you. There is no need to fuss with setting up utility accounts and paying monthly bills. Your quar-terly rent covers electricity, natural gas, water, sewer, garbage, cable TV in the lounges, and internet access (both wired and wireless).
LIVE CONVENIENTLY! You are just a short walk away from any classroom, multiple dining locations and retail stores, gyms, the beach, the library, the university center, and more!
GET INVOLVED! With thousands of students living on cam-pus, there are plenty of opportunities for social and academic involvement. Run for hall government, be on the executive board, become a Resident Assistant, join a student group… the possibilities are nearly endless!
LEARN! We have programs and regularly scheduled activities beyond the classroom that provide you with opportunities for growth and development. Students who live on campus can eat meals with faculty, go on special excursions to Chicago, and participate in small seminars for degree credit!
MAKE FRIENDS! It’s much easier to meet new people when you live on campus. Just step outside your door and you’ll have instant friends to hang out with! Regularly scheduled activities and programs that build community spirit also provide many opportunities to meet people who live close by and share similar interests as you.

living on campus
One advantage of living on campus is the close proximity to dining halls and campus convenience stores. There are dining facilities in six of the larger residence halls: 1835 Hinman, Allison, Elder, Foster-Walker, Sargent, and Willard. Each of the six residential dining locations features an all-you-can-eat menu with a wide range of choices.
Meals are planned with students’ preferences and suggestions in mind and include a diverse range of healthy choices, traditional heartland entrees, ethnic selections, and vegetarian and
vegan options. Every meal includes a choice of fresh fruit and beverages; lunch and dinner offer extensive salad and deli bars.
In addition to the six main dining halls, other on-campus dining options include six restaurants and cafes, two convenience stores (c-stores), and the Norris University Center.

Dining Options and Meal Plans
Residence Hall Staff Every residence hall has Resident Assistants (RAs) who are supervised by a Residence Director (RD). RAs are students who live in the community and act as a resource for the students on their floor or in their area of the building. RAs provide support to students during their transition to Northwestern and implement a wide variety of programs and activities. RDs are full-time, live-in professionals. RAs and RDs are responsible for creating community, providing support, and engaging their residents. They are also trained to handle any issues that may arise while
living on campus. If you need advice or just someone to listen, you can turn to your RA or RD.
Safety and SupportThe safety and security of our residents is maintained by the efforts of the University staff with the cooperation of everyone living in the residence halls. Additionally, Northwestern University provides many other resources designed to promote the safety and security of everyone on campus. We have a residential security program that includes a combination of overnight lobby staffing by a team of Community Security Officers (CSOs) and/
or Security Officers, along with video surveillance of residence hall lobbies and doors. CSOs, as part of the University Police staff, are stationed at posts inside the majority of residence halls.
To learn about the other resources that exist to provide safety and security on campus, visit http://bit.ly/NURS-Safety.
ServicesWe provide a number of services and amenities that help make everyday life easy. Some of what we offer includes:
Mail: We have two mail and package centers located on campus, one on the north side of campus at Kemper and one on the south side of campus at Foster-Walker. If a student receives a package, they are notified via email to pick it up. All other mail is sorted and sent to the student’s mailbox, located in or near their residence hall. Learn more at http://bit.ly/NURS-mail.
Laundry: Laundry services are free for all residential students. Laundry machines are located in every residence hall. All of our washers and dryers on campus are water- and energy-efficient. All laundry rooms are equipped with LaundryView, an online service that allows students to see which machines are available and even receive a text message when their laundry is done.
Maintenance: If you need service in your room or in a common room of your building, you can submit a maintenance request online.
Housekeeping: We have a full-time housekeeping staff to maintain the common areas of the residence halls.
Vending: Vending machines are located throughout campus academic and residential buildings.
Free Printing: You can print up to 100 sheets of paper for free every month at our “Freenters Stations,” located in Allison, Foster-Walker, Kemper, Engelhart, Bobb-McCulloch, and the Norris University Center.
Cable TV: We’ve teamed up with XFINITY Comcast to provide students living on campus access to XFINITY on Campus. Through XFINITY on Campus, residents may access XFINITY On Demand and live TV networks including NBC, AMC, TBS, ESPN, and more. Residents can access this service via laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
Neighborhood Desks: Neighborhood desks provide 24/7 staff support to the three neighborhoods (Kemper, Alison and Foster-Walker). Residential students may use these desks to report maintenance issues, pick up a delivery, or check out a pass key. The desks are staffed by RAs during the day and by a Community Service Officer (CSO) in the evening.
housing optionsAll undergraduate students have the option to live in our residence halls, residential colleges, residential communities, and special-interest housing. Virtually every first-year student chooses to live in our residence halls and nearly 70% of the undergraduate population lives on campus. To help choose where to live, explore your housing options below:
Traditional Residence HallsWe have 13 traditional residence halls on campus, ranging from residences with as few as 25 students to larger residences with more than 500. Each building has its own character, spirit, and unique advantages. There is a building and a style to fit just about everyone’s preference. The residence halls are a great place to live and meet people from all over the world. RAs and student leaders from Residence Hall Association frequently plan programs to help you meet people and be academically successful.
Residential CollegesWe have 11 residential colleges on campus, ranging from 40 to nearly 300 students. Some have a single unifying theme such as international studies
ELDER HALL
while others are multi-thematic. Each college is headed by a faculty member who serves as the Faculty Master. Masters and student officers recruit faculty members for the fellows program, which supports faculty presence through meals in the college, presentations known as “firesides,” and outings around campus and Chicago. In addition, fellows routinely lead small credit-bearing seminars reserved for college members and mentor residents as research assistants through a specially funded program.
Students interested in living in a residential college should refer to the appropriate sections of the Housing Contract.
Residential CommunitiesWe have two residential communities on campus, located at Allison Hall and Elder Hall. These communities focus on student engagement, student-driven programming, and live-in faculty involvement while providing students with a comfortable place to live, learn, and grow.
Special Interest HousingSpecial interest housing is for students who choose to live with others who share a special academic or personal interest. A special interest housing group may be located on a wing of a residence hall or have “exclusive use” of a small house. The following are special interest housing options within University Housing:
Gender Open Housing: Gender Open Housing allows students, regardless of sex, gender, or gender identity, to share a room or suite in select areas of our residence halls. The primary reason for such a policy is to provide housing options that take into consideration varying identities and preferences, and to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all students. Open Housing is not intended − and in fact is highly discouraged − for romantic couples.
GREEN House: GREEN House is a close community of students interested in living sustainably and being actively engaged with the world around them. Residents of GREEN House do service together, install efficient infrastructure in the house, and educate others about their impact on the planet as Northwestern students and as citizens of the world.
Substance-Free Housing: The use of alcohol, illicit drugs, cigarettes, and other forms of smoking materials is not permitted in substance-free housing. Residents and their guests are not allowed to return to the residence under the influence of or in possession of any prohibited substances.
Interfaith Hall: Interfaith Hall builds religious awareness and pluralism both within the hall and in the Northwestern community at large. Residents represent diverse religious and philosophical traditions, ranging from Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism to Unification, Atheism, and Agnosticism, to name a few. Through the partnership of the Chaplain’s Office and Residential Services, Interfaith Hall has become a hub for interfaith programming including events like the Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Dinner, firesides with Northwestern professors and campus clergy, trips to places of worship, and outings to explore Chicago’s religious and cultural life.
Traditional Rooms Traditional-style housing consists of a series of rooms and then a common bathroom. The residents are grouped by gender. Social lounges and study space are available in designated places throughout the building.
Closed SuitesClosed suites consist of a cluster of rooms, a common room, and a bathroom (or bathrooms). Select suites also include a kitchen. The suites are not necessarily all the same gender. The bathroom(s) and common room are intended for exclusive use by residents in that suite and their guests.
Open Suites Open suites consist of a cluster of rooms, a common room, and a bathroom. The common room is an open space with no door. The suites consist of residents of the same gender. Though the bathroom and lounge are primarily used by residents of that suite, those spaces are accessible to all residents in the building.
What’s included in all rooms?Regardless of the style of housing, Residential Services provides one of each of the following in undergraduate housing: desk, desk chair, twin bed (with a twin extra long mattress), closet or dresser, wastebasket, and recycling bin. These are PER OCCUPANT, and so singles would have one of each item, doubles would have two of each, and triples would have three of each.
Open/Closed suites: All of our undergraduate housing options fall into three basic styles of living:
• Traditional-style• Open suites• Closed suites
The descriptions to the right are meant to provide an idea of the kind of living environment in a particular community. The diagrams are for reference only and are not necessarily representative of the number of rooms in a suite or wing or the number of bathrooms in the community. The diagrams are also not drawn to scale.

room selectionNew undergraduate students, both entering freshmen and transfer students, apply for housing at Northwestern University as part of an integrated admission process. The process is as follows:
1. You’re admitted to Northwestern. WOOHOO! You’ll be asked to confirm your intent to enroll by paying a non-refundable $400 tuition deposit.
2. After this tuition deposit is received, you will then be asked to pay a second non-refundable $200 housing prepayment if you requested and have been granted campus housing. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will contact you via your NU e-mail account on how to pay your housing prepayment online.
3. Once all housing prepayments have been made, the next step will be to fill out the online housing contract. You may list your building and roommate preferences; or if you know who you want to be your roommate, you may add your roommate’s name. Students interested in the residential
college program should complete the brief personal statement and indicate which college(s) they want to live in. This contract will be made available on the Residential Services website on May 1, 2015, at 5:00 PM. This application must be completed by June 1, 2015, at 5:00 PM. Once you’ve made all prepayments and after you have completed the online housing contract then CONGRATS! You contracted for a space in housing!
4. Freshmen will participate in the online self-assignment room selection process in late June and early July and know their assignment and roommate information immediately after choosing their room. For those who choose not to participate in the self-selection process, Residential Services will send an email to the Northwestern email account of those students containing the room assignment and roommate information by the first week of August.
If you have additional questions about the housing contracting process, you may call us at 847-467-HOME, or send us an e-mail at [email protected].
