The history of this feast is quite remarkable. This great feast is due to the great love of Jesus by two women by names of Juliana and Eve. They lived in the early 1200’s in Liege, Belgium. Juliana had been an orphan, but was educated by the Augusnian nuns of Mount Cornillon. From her early childhood, Juliana had a strong devoon to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Eventually, Juliana entered the convent and would become the Mother Superior. Throughout her life, Juliana shared with her sisters and all others her love and devoon for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. She encouraged her local bishop, priests and theologians to promote devoon and a special feast in honor of the Holy Eucharist. Aer she died, a friend of Juliana’s, who shared her love for Jesus, by the name of Eve, took up the cause of promong devoon to Jesus in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. At this me, a priest who had served in Liege and had known Juliana and her great love for the Eucharist was elected to the papacy, Pope Urban IV. Eve encouraged the Bishop of Liege to appeal to Pope Urban to make this local feast and devoon one for the whole Church. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the centuries this wonderful feast has touched and inspired countless Catholics. In many places, outside processions are held where Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is literally taken to the streets. This is a truly wonderful experience. I hope that one day, we may be able to hold a Corpus Chris Procession here at SJV. One of the greatest blessings of our parish is Eucharisc Adoraon. I am connually amazed and impressed to see cars of adorers in the parking lot at all hours of the day and night. It is a wonderful sight to walk into the Adoraon Chapel and see people in prayer. Did you know that you can always come and pray before Jesus, Our Eucharisc Lord, here at SJV? The chapel is open 24/7. Our Lord is waing for you and is always there for you to open your heart, to give you his love and to li your burdens. It is perfectly safe during the night. We have our security making rounds, the parking lot is well lit and the door has a lock (for the security code, just ask the front office ahead of me). I parcularly encourage parents to teach their children by word and example how to make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament. It is a beauful and most meaningful gi that will last a lifeme. A few weeks ago, I made menon that I had requested a Parochial Vicar (Assistant Pastor) for our parish. I am pleased to inform you that in August, we will have another priest serving us here at SJV. Cardinal DiNardo has assigned Fr. Clark Sample to our parish. He was ordained last year in 2016 and has spent the last year compleng his studies in Rome. Fr. Clark is a Houstonian who grew up in St. Michael’s Parish in the Galleria area. Needless to say, I am grateful to Cardinal DiNardo for his consideraon of our parish, and I look forward to Fr. Jeff Falanga, who has served for the last five years as the coordinator of our Jr. High Youth Ministry is returning to Florida to become the Director of Religious Educaon of a parish in Orlando. Dear Friends in Christ:

This weekend we celebrate the wonderful Feast of Corpus Chris (The Body of Christ). The history

of this feast is quite remarkable. This great feast is due to the great love of Jesus by two women by

names of Juliana and Eve. They lived in the early 1200’s in Liege, Belgium. Juliana had been an

orphan, but was educated by the Augus nian nuns of Mount Cornillon. From her early childhood,

Juliana had a strong devo on to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Eventually, Juliana entered the

sisters and all others her love and devo on for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. She encouraged her

local bishop, priests and theologians to promote devo on and a special feast in honor of the Holy

Eucharist. A2er she died, a friend of Juliana’s, who shared her love for Jesus, by the name of Eve,

took up the cause of promo ng devo on to Jesus in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. At this me, a

elected to the papacy, Pope Urban IV. Eve encouraged the Bishop of Liege to appeal to Pope Urban

to make this local feast and devo on one for the whole Church. And the rest, as they say, is

history.

Through the centuries this wonderful feast has touched and inspired countless Catholics. In many

places, outside processions are held where Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is literally taken to the

streets. This is a truly wonderful experience. I hope that one day, we may be able to hold a Corpus

Chris Procession here at SJV. One of the greatest blessings of our parish is Eucharis c Adora on. I

day and night. It is a wonderful sight to walk into the Adora on Chapel and see people in prayer.

Did you know that you can always come and pray before Jesus, Our Eucharis c Lord, here at SJV?

The chapel is open 24/7. Our Lord is wai ng for you and is always there for you to open your heart,

to give you his love and to li2 your burdens. It is perfectly safe during the night. We have our

security making rounds, the parking lot is well lit and the door has a lock (for the security code, just

ask the front office ahead of me). I par cularly encourage parents to teach their children by word

and example how to make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament. It is a beau ful and most meaningful

gi2 that will last a life me.

A few weeks ago, I made men on that I had requested a Parochial Vicar (Assistant Pastor) for our

parish. I am pleased to inform you that in August, we will have another priest serving us here at

SJV. Cardinal DiNardo has assigned Fr. Clark Sample to our parish. He was ordained last year in

2016 and has spent the last year comple ng his studies in Rome. Fr. Clark is a Houstonian who

grew up in St. Michael’s Parish in the Galleria area. Needless to say, I am grateful to Cardinal

DiNardo for his considera on of our parish, and I look forward to Fr. Clark’s arrival. Also a few

re-shape and refocus our en re Youth Ministry program (Grades 6-12). They have some great new

ideas and some exci ng new ac vi es and programs for the coming year. Also, if you are a parent

of a Jr. High or High School student, your input, support and help are needed to serve this

“The journey makes us one” RCIA: Forming CommiHed Disciples

The Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults (RCIA) is the ritual process by which non-Catholic and unbap zed adults learn and begin to

assimilate Catholic belief and tradi on. It is a ritual because there is an order or path which guides inquirers; it is a process because

Ini a on is ul mately about one’s rela onship with Christ and his body, the Church, and cannot be “programmed”. The RCIA is a

collabora ve discernment process with the inquirer under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The rite of Chris(an ini(a(on...is designed for adults who, a er hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek

the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. By God’s help they will be strengthened

spiritually during their prepara(on so at the proper (me they may celebrate the sacraments frui0ully. RCIA, 1.

We are called to follow Christ as missionary disciples by

seeking the truth, serving others, and living our faith in all

that we do. Across the U.S., Catholics will be celebrating

the Fortnight for Freedom beginning on June 21st, the

vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More.

Let us take a few moments each day during the Fort-

night to pray, reflect, and take action on religious liberty.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

(USCCB) has provided a variety of resources, including

daily reflections, which we will post on the SJV website at

http://www.stjohnvianney.org/ministries/social-services/

fortnight-for-freedom/ during the Fortnight.

In this time of increasing polarization in our culture, we

can contribute to a better understanding of religious

freedom in a way that respects all people.

“Hold firm, stand fast, and insist upon what belongs to you by

right as Catholics—our first, most cherished liberty” (USCCB).

The Most Holy Body and blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)

The Feast of St. John Vianney

Friday, August 4, 2017

Mass 6:30 pm in the Church

Free Spaghetti Dinner in the Activity Center following Mass

To help us prepare better for the dinner, we are asking everyone

that is planning on attending to RSVP by July 28.

You may RSVP in various ways: through our website (under the Feast Day Promo);

email us [email protected] or

call the Parish Life Office at 281-497-1555.

We put pride into everything like salt. We like to see that our good works are known. If our virtues are

seen, we are pleased; if our faults are perceived, we are sad. I remark that in a great many people; if one

says anything to them, it disturbs them, it annoys them. The saints were not like that - they were vexed if

their virtues were known, and pleased that their imperfections should be seen.

St. John Vianney
