Art Article:

Christ ChurchPicture Gallery

www.livinginoxford.com 33

Christ Church is unique among the Oxford and Cambridge colleges inpossessing an important collection of Old Master paintings and drawings. In 1765, General John Guise, a soldier and art collector, bequeathed hiscollection of over 200 paintings and almost 2000 drawings to his formercollege. This extraordinary gift enabled Christ Church to introduce art intoOxford education without the necessity to travel to Italy or to gain access tostately homes (which held the majority of art collections in the country). Atthat date the collection was unequalled by any other Oxford institution. The collection is strongest in Italian art, from the 14th to the 18th century. Some of the early religious panels are painted by now-anonymous masters, butthey allow the viewer to trace the beginnings of the professional ‘artist’ as weknow him. Later works in the collection include paintings by highly-acclaimedartists such as Filippino Lippi, Tintoretto, Veronese, Annibale Carracci, andSalvator Rosa. There are also some remarkable works by northern painterssuch as Anthony van Dyck, Frans Hals, and Hugo van der Goes.General John Guise’s extraordinary bequest is now celebrating its 250thanniversary, and while the whole Picture Gallery is testimony to hisbenefaction, an upcoming exhibition (Undisputed Masterpieces, 3 June – 5October 2015) will draw special attention to his collection of drawings. Theyinclude some of the most important Old Master drawings in the country, withsheets by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Bellini, Titian, Holbein, Dürer, Raphael,Rubens, and many more.Another exhibition (250 Reasons for 250 Years, 12 June – 5 October 2015) willcelebrate the anniversary in a collaborative format: an installation of 250 cardsto be displayed in the Picture Gallery. Blank cards were sent to members of theChrist Church community, to artists, to scholars, to students, and others—withthe request that they write down their thoughts about why art matters, whywe should celebrate art benefactors like Guise, and why those who preserve, research, present, and create art still matter today. We will display 250 of thesecards in the Picture Gallery, one for each year since the Guise bequest. Our current exhibitions include Raphael’s Legacy: Italian Design in the 16thCentury (12 February - 25 May 2015) and Up Close and Personal - A Portraitof Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (19 March - 31 May 2015). Sports Article:

An Evening withEddie Pepperell

www.livinginoxford.com 47

Written byColin Rosser12th MarchWith a packed audience of over 150 expectant golfers waiting for theirhome grown star, Frilford Heath Golf Club put on a splendid show fortheir local boy.Eddie was a junior here from the age of 11 and went through the ranks winningJunior Gold Medal and the Gold Medal. He went through the talent pathway inBB&O eventually into the England squad and then GB&I. Regarding club selection Eddie normally has a feel for the right club to hit, butlistens to caddie Jamie Herbert if he points out that all the trouble is if you hitit long or if he needs to carry a ridge on the green for example.Eddie uses Taylormade clubs and tends to change his driver and putter morethan anything else. Although he was hitting his five wood well but not quitelong enough he seemed to hit his three wood more ‘steamly’. To get the rightclub he put a four wood head on the five wood’s shaft and got the result hewanted. Eddie’s putting stats have improved every year for the last three years. IMGManagement Company now looks after Eddie, where he has a good agreementthat puts his own interests at the heart of the relationship. They were alsoinstrumental in Eddie getting a clothing sponsorship with Wolsey.Although 2015 started brightly, a bad dose of flu knocked Eddie back whichmeant that he missed the next two tournaments. However he is in action againon March 26th in Morocco, where he is hoping to improve on his currentposition of 36 in The Race to Dubai. He ended 2014 very strongly and had sixtop ten finishes in his last fourteen tournaments. He was asked about the ups and downs of a professional golfer, of missing cutsand the frustration it caused and almost always after such an event he wouldgo back to basics. Both Eddie and Jamie agreed that the way players and caddies are treated attournaments has improved remarkably and they both thought that the eventat Wentworth was the best of the year. This was closely followed by the lastfour events in the Race to Dubai.I am sure we will all be following Eddie’s career as closely as possible and wishhim every success.

Patisserie Review:

GatineauPatisserie

www.livinginoxford.com 59

Written byAudrey Vallée16th MarchComing from France, it was nice to have the opportunity to meet FabienGautier, the manager and company director who working with HervéGatineau, the owner of this wonderful patisserie and bakery in Oxford.Because almost all of Gatineau’s team is French and as the smell of breadperfumed the entire store, I could feel at home for a while…!After 10 years working at Maison Blanc, Hervé Gatineau wanted to have hisown business and decided to open his bakery in 2006. His main goal was tocreate the French touch in Oxford, in a local area where it is enjoyable to live, and Summertown seemed to be the perfect place.A few years ago, the team decided to arrange the place differently and to openup the kitchen directly to the customers. It is now possible for the public towatch the team making their bread and patisseries whilst they choose what tobuy – it’s a great mix. They wanted to show the clientele that everything ismade on site; especially that it is cooked the same day by professional chefs. This new format entertains the children as much as the adults. Furthermore, the smell of fresh bread coming out of the oven is reminiscent of Frenchbakeries.Gatineau offers a wide range of French cakes and viennoiseries that you cannotfind anywhere else in Oxford. Croissants, pains au chocolat, brioches notforgetting to mention chocolate cake, éclairs, macaroons and many otherpastries, are exactly the same as French ones! Because of the lack of space inthe premises and how much hard work it is for the chefs (who start workingat 3.30 in the morning!) they cannot offer everything they wanted. However, because of the Gatineau’s success and the desire to satisfy its customers,Gatineau has some ideas to grow its business (but I will keep those a secret). As a typical French person, I am really meticulous concerning the baking ofbread. I had the chance to taste one of the three kinds of baguettes Gatineauoffer (white, poppy-seed and rustic). It is perfect: crispy outside and not toocooked inside. Just delicious!Actually, it is not surprising since it is really important for them to have thehighest quality. This is the reason why each special ingredient is imported fromFrance by an English company - the butter and milk, for example come fromNormandy, to make the best bread and cakes on site. Otherwise, they makeabsolutely everything, except chocolate which requires a special room to bemade, but I suppose we can forgive them that!Gatineau has built its reputation in Oxfordshire and works with several cafésand restaurants. So, if you do not have the opportunity to come toSummertown, you still have the chance to try some of Gatineau’s specialitycakes at one of their partnerships establishments, such as the Organic Café orthe Grand Café, located in the heart of Oxford.

Oxford Fashion Week

In March 2015, the Oxford Fashion Week celebrated its 6thanniversary. This year’s event saw a range of events taking place indifferent Oxford locations.I was fortunate to attend three events set up by the team: the opening nightat the Varsity Club, the re-fashion at Town Hall but also the Bloggers PreviewParty at the delightful Malmaison Hotel; the latter event a new addition toOxford Fashion Week and a sign of the times! The Bloggers Preview was runby Antonia Mackay who is the PR Director. The aim of the Bloggers PreviewParty was to introduce passionate individuals who want to work in fashionto those who already have an experience within it.There were several speakers including Katie McNeil (currently stylist forHuff Magazine) but also young fashion students such as Alison Brodie orBeth Elstone who had the opportunity to explain their current and futureprojects which they hope will help them to fulfil their dream of having acareer in fashion. We also had the chance to hear from Adam Kashani andErin Young – two models at OFW from Oxford University - who shared their‘model experience’ with us, which was very interesting. The models then put on a sneak preview show so that we could see someof the designs featured for the show. For the organisers, this event was verysuccessful because it mixed fashion and careers which surround this area –in this case journalism. The team introduced passionate and interestingyoung people who have the will to succeed in the fashion industry and whowill probably work at the next Oxford Fashion Week in October. The next OFW – shows are planned during the Halloween period at theamazing Sheldonian Theatre and more new venues. Caroline Muirhead pushed herself to the limit last year for theBlenheim Palace Triathlon, raising over £23,000 for blood cancercharity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, in memory of her brotherwho died last yearCaroline took part in the triathlon after Gregor was diagnosed with acutemyeloid leukaemia (AML) in September 2013. After his diagnosis he hadintensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy and long stays in hospital. InFebruary last year, Caroline was found to be a stem cell match for Gregorand he underwent a transplant. Devastatingly Gregor passed away inSeptember, aged just 32.She said: “We were all devastated when Gregor was diagnosed butthroughout everything he remained positive, always showing concern forhis family above his own fears. I’ve never seen my brother prouder than theday his son Jamie was born in August 2011, he loved being a dad. After hisstem cell transplant, Jamie would draw pictures for Gregor to cheer him upduring the recovery. These, along with visits from Jamie and his wife Louise, were Gregor’s main driving force to get better.“Sadly, a few months after the triathlon, Gregor’s leukaemia returned andhe died. His dream was to find a cure for AML. With the amazing events suchas the triathlon, the fundraising it generates, combined with the dedicatedwork of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, hopefully one day we canachieve this. “Thanks to the incredible support from family, friends and colleagues – Imanaged to raise an amazing £23,000. The triathlon was a lot morephysically demanding than I’d imagined but also a lot of fun. Crossing thefinishing line was a very emotional moment for me.Matt Lawley, Head of Sports Events at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, says: “We can’t thank Caroline enough for the stunning amount she raised. It really is a phenomenal achievement and every penny raised forLeukaemia & Lymphoma Research will help us in our mission to beat bloodcancer, stop people from dying, and make patients’ lives better.”The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Blenheim Palace Triathlon takesplace on 13-14 June 2015.
